Legspinner Lloyd Pope will not get the chance to play in the Sheffield Shield final as South Australia look set to opt for an extra seamer in the hope of breaking a 29-year title-winning drought against Queensland.Captain Nathan McSweeney confirmed on Tuesday that Pope will be squeezed out of the XI against Queensland. Pope has taken 21 wickets at 25.95 in five Shield appearances this season, including match-winning bags of 6 for 74 against Victoria and 4 for 76 against Tasmania, but both of those came at Adelaide Oval.He took 3 for 84 from 26 overs last week against Queensland at Karen Rolton Oval, where the final will be played. “Lloyd’s been great for us this year and his efforts are a great reason why we’re here and playing in a Shield final,” McSweeney said. “I think Karen Rolton Oval is typically a tough ground to bowl spin on. The wicket has a little bit more moisture in it. So hence we’re going with an extra [seam] bowler. It’s a tough decision, but I think when you’re in finals you’ve got to make tough decisions. In the event the Sheffield Shield final ends in a draw, the title will be decided on first-innings bonus points which are accrued across the first 100 overs.

Batting teams earn 0.01 of a bonus point for every run scored over 200 in the initial 100 overs; bowling sides get 0.1 of a bonus point for every wicket in the first 100 overs. For example, the batting side scores 350 all out in 90 overs they earn 1.5 points and the bowling side 1 point.

Should bonus points be tied and the match drawn, SA will win the Shield given they finished top of the ladder and earned hosting rights for the final.

McSweeney would not confirm the final XI but it appears likely that one of Henry Thornton or Jordan Buckingham will be squeezed out to make room for Doggett.Thornton’s incredible late season form makes the selection decision extremely difficult. The Magpies return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Wolves to St James’ Park and looking to kick their season into gear after a relatively slow start.

A frustrating summer window at Newcastle ended positively, despite losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool, with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa arriving from VfB Stuttgart and Brentford respectively.

The Magpies’ two newest signings will both be vying for a start this weekend, and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has talked up the idea of Woltemade leading the line.

“Eddie Howe has to start with Nick Woltemade, if not both him and Yoane Wissa together. Wissa hasn’t played a lot of football recently, so I’m not sure if he goes straight into the starting XI. But if you’re those two forwards, there is no better opportunity to get off the mark than facing Wolves at home!

“I always go with the logic that if the best team in the league wants to sign you, then you’re a good player. Bayern Munich wanted Woltemade, so he must know how to play! If him and Wissa can together get the goals scored by Isak last season, it’s a good transfer window for Newcastle in my opinion.”

Newcastle hero could leave before the weekend

Away from incoming signings, it looks as though Jamaal Lascelles could leave Newcastle on Friday, with reliable journalists Craig Hope and Simon Jones of The Daily Mail reporting that Trabzonspor are “exploring a deal” for the centre-back.

The Turkish transfer deadline day is Friday evening, so it would be a last-gasp piece of business if it does go through, with the 31-year-old only having a year remaining on his current deal.

A move away for Lascelles could make the most sense for all parties, considering it would allow him more regular playing time after dropping down the pecking order, as well as meaning Newcastle cash in on him instead of losing him on a free transfer.

If Lascelles does leave, he will be remembered as an excellent servant for the Magpies down the years, captaining them impressively earlier in his career and being showered with praise by Eddie Howe.

“He’s been an unbelievable captain for us. Captaincy doesn’t just exist on the pitch, it has to exist off the pitch. The two things are so intrinsically linked. A lot of our success last year wasn’t just down to the team, it came down to a group of players giving everything on and off the pitch.”

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Van Dijk named Olivier Giroud as his toughest opponent despite having squared off against the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Haaland.

The Liverpool captain looked back on the Frenchman’s knack for a goal against the Reds before labeling him an “annoying” striker to play against.

Although Messi seems the obvious choice, the fact that Giroud has scored three goals in five games against Van Dijk throughout his career makes him a worthy candidate for his toughest opponent.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be thrilled that their latest acquisitions played an impactful role in their emphatic start to IPL 2025 against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).Josh Hazlewood used the spongy bounce at Eden Gardens to scuttle KKR’s powerplay and death-overs plans with analysis of 4-0-22-1; Krunal Pandya ended Ajinkya Rahane’s high-intent fifty in a spell of 4-0-29-3; Suyash Sharma salvaged an ordinary night with the massive wicket of Andre Russell; Phil Salt killed the chase with 56 off 31, an identical score to Rahane’s. KKR were forced to bring in Varun Chakravarthy in the fourth over, and Salt took 20 off him. Also, the ball had stopped gripping by then, possibly because of the dew.By the time Varun got the better of Salt, RCB had reached 95 in 8.3 overs. The asking rate had dropped under seven, and Kohli was never going to let such a chase slip. However, what will thrill RCB is that Kohli kept the intent up and sought to get them a big net run-rate boost. He slog-swept Varun for a six in his last over when it would have been easy to just play him out. New captain Rajat Patidar played the perfect little hand at the other end with 34 off 16 as RCB romped home.

وتحصل محمد صلاح على بطاقة صفراء، في الدقيقة 57، لارتكابه خطأ ضد لاعب برينتفورد، وظفر بركلة ركنية بعدما سدد كرة ولكنها اصطدمت بأحد لاعبي الخصم، في الدقيقة 65.

وسدد محمد صلاح كرة بعيدة على مرمى برينتفورد، في الدقيقة 83، قبل أن ينجح في تسجيل هدف لصالح ليفربول في الدقيقة 89، بطريقة رائعة، ولكن الهدف لم يكن كافيًا لمنح كتيبة آرني سلوت أي شيء.
