HYS: Can Sunderland keep hold of Josh Maja?

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland’s season is going to plan so far in that they are well within a chance of returning to the Championship.

The North-East outfit currently sit second in League One, two points adrift of leaders Portsmouth after 17 matches.

One of the main reasons that the Black Cats find themselves in a positive position is because of the goals produced by Josh Maja.

The 19-year-old moved to the Stadium of Light from Fulham in 2015, and this season in particular he has shone.

Thogden witnessed Wayne Rooney’s final England cap. Check out his vlog here…

In total, the 5ft 11in attacker has made 18 first-team appearances, and all 10 of his goals have been scored in league matches.

It is no surprise, then, that the forward’s form has attracted the attention of other clubs.

According to BristolLive, scouts have been sent by Bristol City to keep close tabs on Maja and his performances.

If the youngster continues in this form, many other clubs will soon start knocking on the door.

With that in mind, will Sunderland be able to keep hold of him?

Celtic could be the perfect home for South Africa’s Lebo Mothiba

Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic are gearing up for a busy January transfer window to make up for mistakes in the summer.

The Hoops were extremely quiet over the summer months, making just one major addition to their squad. Celtic broke their club record to land Odsonne Edouard on a permanent deal from Paris Saint-Germain but lost both Moussa Dembele and Stuart Armstrong. After a slow start to the campaign, Celtic have finally returned to their best and the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

The Bhoys are expected to strengthen heavily during the upcoming window with Rodgers revealing the club are working hard to prepare. Edouard has been in fine form since moving to Scotland permanently, but an injury would leave the club short of quality options in attack.

Therefore, Celtic should make a move for Strasbourg forward Lebo Mothiba.

Valued at £5.4 million by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old joined his current club in the summer after Lille were forced into a sale due to financial difficulties. Aware of his immense potential, Lille installed a buy-back and sell-on clause into his contract at his new employers.

Mothiba has been in fine form in Ligue 1, scoring six goals in six starts so far this season. As a reward for his excellent showings, the youngster was called up to the senior South Africa national team and netted three goals in his first three appearances for his country. As Rodgers has a reputation for bringing the best out of young players, Mothiba could thrive under the former Liverpool manager’s leadership.

Should Celtic progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League, they could offer the forward the chance to shine on the European stage, which is why they must seek to make a move for the 22-year-old come the New Year.

Cenk Tosun should be given another chance to start against Cardiff on Saturday

Everton boss Marco Silva should consider giving centre-forward Cenk Tosun a start up front against Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Toffees welcome Neil Warnock’s men to Goodison Park on the back of an encouraging performance at Stamford Bridge last weekend, where they kept Chelsea to a 0-0 draw.

And it would be a great opportunity for Tosun to be given another chance to show his worth after being demoted to the bench by Silva after a 3-1 defeat to West Ham United in September.

The Turkey international started the first five league games of the season but the poor showing against the Hammers saw Silva start experimenting with Dominic Calvert Lewin as an option before moving Richarlison up front.

The manager has been looking to find his perfect attacking combination but has had recent success with the Brazilian as striker and Bernard, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Theo Walcott behind him.

But Walcott’s continued struggle to make an impact on the Everton team should tempt Silva to moving Richarlison back to the right-wing and let Tosun lead the attack.

The former Arsenal man has been clumsy and his controlling is still letting him down after all these years.

The introduction of Bernard seems to have been working for the Merseyside club and the attack could pose a real threat if it has him and Richarlison running at defenders from the flanks.

The 27-year-old Tosun, however, should offer more commitment when given the chance. His accuracy has let him down on too many occasions this season and he only has two goals to his name so far.

Bernard’s creative precision though could be just what he needs to get back on the goals and could spark him to fully get his Everton career firing.

Cardiff’s vulnerable defence should be an exciting prospect for Silva to further experiment with combinations with the availability of Sigurddson still a doubt after suffering an ankle injury at Chelsea.

Recent reports should prompt Celtic to move for West Brom’s Oliver Burke

According to a recent report from The Express & Star, Oliver Burke could be set for a move away come the New Year. The Scotland international currently plays his football at Championship outfit West Brom and has done so since leaving RB Leipzig back in 2017, although a lack of senior football under Darren Moore has plunged his future at the club into doubt.

And reports suggest that manager Moore is willing to let the young winger leave the Hawthorns on loan in January, which should be of keen interest to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers as his side seek to bid for an eighth straight Scottish Premiership title.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Bhoys have been the dominant force north of the border in the last few years, with their Scottish League Cup success on Sunday meaning that Rodgers’ side have won all seven domestic trophies on offer since the Northern Irishman moved to Parkhead back in 2016.

Yet the Scottish giants could be set for a battle in the league this term given Steven Gerrard’s Rangers moved top of the pile with victory at Hearts on Sunday, and given the lack of investment in the playing squad during the summer, Rodgers will surely be looking to bolster his ranks to thus fend off the Gers in the second half of the campaign.

And given his proven track record of improving young players, as well as the undoubted quality Burke possesses, reports that Moore is willing to let the 21-year-old leave West Brom in January should be of keen interest to the Celtic chief.

Scotland international Burke made his name at Nottingham Forest a few years ago to thus earn a move to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, although he didn’t exactly set the world alight in his one and only season in Germany before West Brom came calling to bring him back to England.

And things haven’t gone particularly well at the Hawthorns either with just 20 senior appearances to his name, only two of which have come in the Championship this season to underline his lowly position in the Baggies pecking order.

However, one mustn’t forget that the 21-year-old earned a move to RB Leipzig because he was excellent for Forest, netting twice in the 2015/16 season for the Reds, before bagging four times in five league games at the start of the 2016/17 campaign before being snapped up by the Bundesliga outfit.

Thus, there is clearly a very accomplished winger in Burke just waiting to be unlocked, and Rodgers might be the man to do so given his success with young players in the past – he isn’t afraid to give them a chance in the first team to aid in their development.

And when one looks at how well Scott Sinclair has resurrected his career north of the border following a testing time at Aston Villa, the same could well happen of Burke were he to move to Celtic Park.

And were the £9 million-rated Scotsman (as per Transfermarkt) to indeed reproduce his best form for the Bhoys, they themselves would have a gem in the title race, and one that would significantly strengthen their hopes of an eighth straight title.

Opinion: James Maddison would have been better value than Xherdan Shaqiri for Liverpool

Discussion over Liverpool’s potential Coutinho replacement has persisted ever since he departed the club for Barcelona in January, but Xherdan Shaqiri’s impact since arriving at Anfield suggests a quality alternative has already been sourced.

When Shaqiri signed for Liverpool the supporters questioned exactly where he would fit in, with his career at Stoke City suggesting he would be twiddling his thumbs waiting for a chance to dethrone Mo Salah.

But he has found himself in a new-look number ten role, and there’s no question that he is thriving in that position.

Floating between the lines of midfield and attack, Shaqiri has been menacing, creative and incisive when called upon this season.

Such is the quality of his performances that fans and pundits are now beginning to suggest that the Reds have somewhat inadvertently found their Coutinho replacement.

That’s certainly a sound conclusion, but the performances of James Maddison at Leicester City so far this season suggest that they could have signed a superior player for just £9 million extra.

Maddison, 22, signed for the Foxes in a deal worth £22 million, whereas Shaqiri joined Liverpool for just £13 million.

Stylistically speaking, Xhaqiri and Maddison are similar players: they are both technically astute, composed in possession, incisive with their passing and capable of producing moments of magic from distance.

However, Maddison is five years younger than Shaqiri and his scope for potential is huge. When you also consider that Maddison would have counted towards Liverpool’s contingent of homegrown players it becomes clear that Jurgen Klopp might have missed a trick in the summer window.

The new hero at the King Power Stadium already has five goals and two assists to his name from 14 Premier League appearances, and if he continues to perform in the same vein he will be in contention for a place in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up when England kick-off their Euro 2020 campaign.

Liverpool certainly made a shrewd decision to bring Shaqiri to Anfield, but could they have done better? Maddison’s exceptional performances this season certainly suggest so.

The Chalkboard: Eric Dier is the key to Tottenham beating Borussia Dortmund

[ad_pod ]

Mauricio Pochettino’s best hopes of beating Borussia Dortmund lie in Eric Dier, but the midfielder will have to prove his fitness upon his return from emergency surgery.

The Chalkboard

Tottenham have been drawn to face the current Bundesliga leaders in the Champions League Round of 16 after Spurs progressed at the expense of Inter Milan.

Lucien Favre, meanwhile, has sparked a resounding turn of fortunes at the German outfit since his arrival in the summer, with his side unbeaten in their opening 15 league matches – picking up draws on three occasions.

Amongst their star players is captain Marco Reus, who is instrumental in organising the yellow wall’s offence, and has been crowned the division’s Player of the Month on two occasions.

Pochettino’s best chance of eliminating the German outfit in February could be down to Dier, who has been ruled out of the festive period following emergency surgery to remove his appendix.

CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…

Why will Dier be key?

There are few men in Tottenham’s midfield that can command the space between the lines as well as Dier.

The 24-year-old is best suited to that position for he lacks the offensive skills to play a box-to-box role, but his awareness from playing in defence ensures he can cut out the opponents play.

Altogether, Dier has attempted 45 tackles in 13 Premier League appearances, and intercepted the ball on a further 14 occasions.

Winks’ weakness would come through

Despite Harry Winks possessing great ability on the ball, and can easily play a box-to-box role better than Dier, the 22-year-old lacks the defensive nous to shut out Borussia Dortmund’s blistering stars.

If Pochettino desires mobile options in the heart of his side, with Axel Witsel and Thomas Delaney both deep-lying threats, that is where Winks would shine, playing as part of a three-man midfield mirrored by Moussa Sissoko, but Dier would have to be the base of the triangle.

The zippy play BVB can attack with will have to be countered by someone who can slot between the lines and sit as another centre-back, and Dier is the only option Spurs have for this.

Simply shadowing Reus will not be enough to keep the Black and Yellows offence from firing on all cylinders, with Jadon Sancho, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Paco Alcacer all threats on their own, before you get to the overlapping full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Lukasz Piszczek.

Arsenal fans react to Ever Banega rumours

According to Mundo Deportivo, Sevilla’s Ever Banega is close to completing an £18m move to Arsenal, with the player’s agent believed to be in London to finalise terms for a deal that would see the Argentine link up with his former boss.

At 30, the midfielder is soon to be entering his twilight years and, should the switch be completed, he would become the third player in his thirties to be signed by Unai Emery since the Spaniard took the reins in the summer.

The maestro has chalked up eight goals and five assists this season, four and two of which, respectively, came in the Europa League as his side topped their group.

After a tabled contract offer was withdrawn and with his current deal at the Emirates expiring at the end of the season, one of the Gunners’ longest-serving players of the current crop, Aaron Ramsey, is set to depart in the summer – Banega is regarded as the Welshman’s replacement, but some Arsenal fans aren’t happy with the thinking behind the move.

Sunderland ready to sell teen hotshot Josh Maja

After back to back relegations, Sunderland have had a brilliant season and one where the fans can finally get back behind their club.

New owner, Stewart Donald has done a brilliant job in not only bringing in Jack Ross but also recruiting some superb players that have improved the squad massively. Two players that have been starring for the club this season are youth academy graduates Josh Maja and Lynden Gooch.

The 23-year-old attacker has been brilliant this season and has scored five goals to go with eight assists in 19 games for the club this season. Maja too has been in scintillating form this season as he’s scored 12 goals in 19 games this season but could be set to leave the club next month.

The 19-year-old forward has thrived since he’s been given the starting role and according to the Mirror, the club be forced to sell the striker for £1.5 million as they fear he could leave on a free next summer.

The Breakdown

The club is yet to sign the star man to a new deal and is well aware of not being held to ransom as they were with Joel Asoro last year, The Swede left the club in the summer for a cut-price fee as he entered the final year of his contract and with Maja now approaching the time where he can agree a move, Sunderland may have to cash in now.

With the striker in such great form, losing him now may well destroy Sunderland’s hopes of winning the title.

Why the promise of West Ham’s Jack Wilshere now only lives in the past tense

Barring an extraordinary turn of events it’s all over now for Jack Wilshere. The hype. The hope. The hustling, bustling, all-action energy and quick, intelligent feet. The carved passes and midfield marauding. All of that is gone now; resigned to the past.

He will return of course: it would be a ludicrous and irresponsible exaggeration to suggest that last week’s depressingly familiar news that the West Ham star faces yet another operation equates to anything finite like retirement. It simply means in all likelihood he is ruled out for the rest of the season and after that he will return because Wilshere always returns.

But when he does it will be a facsimile of a facsimile of his former self; a shadow of the player we once thought he could be. A reminder that he even exists in fact. At some point in the near future he will create something brilliant from very little – whether it’s for the Hammers or most probably a level below – and it will jolt us into collective nostalgia.

“I forgot he signed for them,” we’ll exclaim next August or September or October as he momentarily excels for a promotion-chasing Championship side. “It’s a shame really isn’t it? He could have been fantastic”. Jack Wilshere is 26 years of age. He is the same age as Mo Salah and Christian Eriksen. He is just eleven months older than Jesse Lingard. He’s a year younger than Kevin de Bruyne.

How did it come to this? We all know how it came to this. Injuries mostly, with a stubborn and persistent streak of delinquency thrown in. Add a large dollop of good old-fashioned expectation burdened onto the young shoulders of a Hertfordshire lad because he had a continental, cultured swagger about him and there you have it: the synopsis of a once highly promising career turned sour.

Really though it was the injuries, fifteen different lay-offs all told inside a decade with undoubtedly the cruellest and most impactful depriving him of fourteen months of development in 2011 just at the point when Wilshere had broken through to prominence as Arsenal and England’s ‘next big thing’. Elsewhere there have been hairline cracks on calf-bones and knee surgeries but usually it was his ankles that undid him. They’re made of glass, that’s what the forums say, with a blunt bankruptcy of sympathy that forums have. On nine occasions they have set him back and this will be his third operation.

It is a litany of absences that have racked up some depressing stats. This is Wilshere’s tenth season as a professional yet he has made 20+ Premier League starts in just three of them. In his last two campaigns in North London – prior to a loan spell at Bournemouth that briefly offered a welcome respite to the tired old narrative – the midfielder made ten starts in total.

Since making his Arsenal bow as a highly prized teen he has been unavailable for selection for 1244 days. That’s 178 weeks. That’s three years and four months. That’s a full third of his career, a tally that doesn’t even include summer breaks and prolonged periods where Wilshere has felt his way back into proceedings, not 100% right. For over 150 games the potentially best player of his type that England has produced for many a year has been on the treatment table rather than the pitch. Again, it’s worth repeating: Jack Wilshere is only 26 years of age.

Let’s skim past the poor attitude, of which the player unquestionably has. Ultimately we’re talking about a few beers and the odd cigarette here and we’re not that puritanical are we? Let’s also all-but-dismiss the expectation that was foisted onto the lad when he strongly hinted at the brightest of futures. Frankly, this is no shrinking violet. Frankly, when we all lined up to proclaim him England’s midfield saviour Wilshere was heading the queue and he’s still there now, pretty much on his own.

No, it was flawed DNA that copped for this once shining star, a physicality that was perfectly ordinary in relation to a talent that towered over his peers. It was a win in instalments for nature over nurture.

It is February 16th 2011 and a nineteen year old Wilshere is bossing a huge tract of turf against Barcelona. He demands the ball. He orchestrates. Under the Emirates lights the home-grown virtuoso astonishes with his confidence and ability. His passing range alone is top shelf and that’s before we get to the artful breaking up of Barca’s exacting possession.

It is a display that stays in the memory and not just to Gooners present. Several years later Xavi declares him to be the future of English football and we all scoff because we know what subsequently became of him. Several years later Pep Guardiola is seriously linked to Wilshere on first taking charge at Manchester City. Again we scoff.

Playmaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals what Lasagne-Gate was really like for Tottenham’s food-poisoned stars – Check out the video below…

Through the years understandably and inevitably the multitude of absences took their toll and Wilshere’s performances became peripheral. His playing style changed, becoming contained and inhibited where once everything was silky smooth and instinctive. His legacy when he’s finally done and dusted will only hint at that. His legacy will amount to one big what if.

And the worst part of it is there are no lessons to learn. Not like the others, who burned so bright so early but eventually fell away. The slow and steady decline of a former prodigy was brought about by drawn-out misfortune and for that we can only shake our heads with a degree of sadness and wish him well at another false dawn.

It will be a false dawn without the hype and devoid of much hope.

Everton fans want to get rid of Gylfi Sigurdsson

[ad_pod ]

Everton booked their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Lincoln City at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

Lincoln are going very, very well in League Two this season, but there is no question that Everton fell below the standard expected of them once again.

Toffees boss Marco Silva selected a strong XI and among those in the team was Gylfi Sigurdsson, with the attacker playing 80 minutes of the clash.

It would be fair to say that Sigurdsson struggled to make his mark, however, and the Iceland international has been inconsistent throughout the campaign.

The 29-year-old, who joined Everton from Swansea City in the summer of 2017, has actually scored eight times in 21 Premier League appearances this season.

His goal record is good, but there have been a number of occasions where the attacker has struggled to inspire his team when they have needed it most.

And now a number of Everton fans seem to have now had enough of Sigurdsson when considering their reaction on social media:
