Celtic’s potential Ntcham-Mbemba swap deal looks desperate yet smart at the same time

Having signed a new four-year contract only a few months ago, Olivier Ntcham’s future at Celtic looked secured or at least until the end of the season.

However, the Frenchman could be on the move this month with Porto said to be interested in bringing him to the Estadio do Dragao and are willing to offer a sweetener in any potential deal.

The Breakdown

According to the Scottish Sun, Porto, who were keen on signing Ntcham last summer, will include Chancel Mbemba in their £14m proposal for the Celtic midfielder in what would be a very interesting development if it took place.

Taking Mbemba in exchange for Ntcham, who recently signed a new contract at Celtic Park, may come across to some as desperate and a move to save face by showing supporters the club are getting something out of the inevitable loss of one of their key players.

However, looking at the bigger picture, getting Mbemba in return for Ntcham should he decide he wants a new challenge could go a long way for the Bhoys.

With Filip Benkovic set to return to Leicester City once his loan spell in Glasgow ends, Celtic will need a new central defender with Mbemba being more than a suitable replacement.

The 24-year-old has had his struggles at Porto, but impressed at Belgian side Anderlecht before a mixed spell at Newcastle United.

Emerson interest shows Liverpool are learning their lesson from this season

According to The Mirror’s transfer column, Liverpool are one of 14 clubs interested in Brazilian defender Emerson.

The 20-year-old right-back is currently with Brazilian outfit Atlético Mineiro, and has obviously caught the attention a huge number of clubs.

The column says that Arsenal are one of The Reds’ main competitors to sign the Brazilian, particularly in light of current right-back Hector Bellerin being ruled out for nine months with a knee injury. The Gunners will be desperate to replace the Spaniard as soon as possible to avoid their top four bid becoming curtailed.

Equally, Liverpool have an injury crisis on their hands two, with Trent Alexander-Arnold facing a few weeks on the sidelines. With Nathaniel Clyne already on loan at Bournemouth and unable to return, Jürgen Klopp has a problem trying to find a suitable replacement for Alexander-Arnold.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”367027″ player=”13308″ title=”Liverpool”]

This is a clear sign that The Reds are learning from their mistakes this season, as this is surely going to be one of the most testing periods of their season. In order to avoid such a troublesome period again, they are seeking a long-term solution rather than quick fixes. The Reds could simply sign a player on loan to cover at right-back this month, but have instead turned to youth to allow them to have a dominant squad for years to come.

With Alexander-Arnold also 20 years of age, Liverpool fans will surely be relishing the battle that he will have with Emerson for many years to come for a starting berth at Anfield should The Reds land this deal this month.

The Chalkboard: Bielsa should start Ayling at CB instead of Phillips when Leeds face Rotherham

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has a big selection decision to make at centre-back when his side will look to get back to winning ways against Rotherham United this weekend, with Pontus Jansson missing through suspension (Leeds Live) following his red card in the 2-1 defeat to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

The Yorkshire outfit have rarely had a settled backline this term due to various injuries and suspensions, although they did have three of their four strongest options available against the Potters in the form of Jansson, Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper, with Ezgjan Alioski filling in at left-back in the absence of Barry Douglas.

When either Jansson or Cooper have been sidelined, Bielsa has usually opted to drop defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips back into the heart of the defence, which has worked particularly well on some occasions but not on others.

The 23-year-old is returning to the fold himself following a three-match suspension after his straight red card from a centre-back position in the defeat to Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day, and is likely to return to the starting XI.

Where should he play?

Even though Phillips has been such a huge hit in the deep midfield role, that hasn’t stopped Bielsa using him as a centre-back when he has needed to, and the experienced manager may well choose to follow the same pattern at the New York Stadium.

However, with the Whites slipping up against Stoke last time out when Adam Forshaw played ahead of the defence, the Argentine boss should instead push the former Middlesbrough ace forward, bring into midfield the man who makes Leeds tick in Phillips, and then move Ayling across from right-back to partner Cooper.

It may not be the 27-year-old’s natural position but he can certainly do a job there as has been proven in the past, and Jamie Shackleton showed in Ayling’s absence previously that he has the ability to do a great job at full-back because of his technical ability.

Cardiff City confirmed the signing of Leandro Bacuna from Reading on Thursday, via a statement on their official website.

The BBC report that the deal has cost the Bluebirds around £4million.

His move brings to an end a two-year spell at Reading, but prior to that he played for Aston Villa for four years.

Per Transfermarkt, he made 131 appearances during his time at Villa Park.

However, Villa fans have expressed disbelief at this transfer, insisting that the versatile midfielder is a disaster waiting to happen.

Indeed, Bacuna was a key part of the team that finished rock-bottom of the Premier League in the 2015-16 season, playing a total of 31 games in the top-flight.

Mislintat out, Monchi in? Arsenal’s new power structures have already crumbled but future should still be bright

[ad_pod ]

Sven Mislintat’s time at Arsenal comes to an end today. After just over a year in the job, the Gunners’ head of recruitment is seeking pastures new, with a return to Germany to join Bayern Munich rumoured.

His exit from the Emirates Stadium came as a shock to many when it was announced in January. Various reasons for his departure have been posited, but regardless of the machinations behind the end of Mislintat’s tenure, the takeaway from this situation for Arsenal remains the same: the brave new world they sought to build after the ousting of Arsene Wenger has faltered.

In the aftermath of the long-serving French manager’s exit, the entire structure of the club was remodelled and updated. Ivan Gazidis assumed the lion’s share of power, with former Barcelona suit Raul Sanllehi becoming director of football, Mislintat heading up the recruitment, and latterly, Unai Emery appointed as head coach.

The subsequent exits of Gazidis and now Mislintat have left this vision in tatters and questions as to what happens next for Arsenal must now be asked. Sanllehi now oversees all footballing operations in north London and what that means for the Gunners is something of a mystery. The grand succession plan has crumbled, and now all is more or less an unknown quantity.

However, one real positive may be on the horizon. According to BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein – speaking on the Arseblog podcast – he believes that Roma sporting director Monchi is Arsenal’s preferred candidate to take up Mislintat’s vacant position. The well-thought of player recruitment expert, and former goalkeeper, enjoys a fine reputation in the game and has a history with Emery.

In their shared time at Sevilla, Emery and Monchi brought great success to the club, all whilst continually making big profits on star players who were then replaced with younger, unproven talents who’d become key figures themselves. With this team stocked full of Monchi-found hidden gems and youth prospects, Emery was able to lead the Spanish club to three successive Europa League triumphs. As a key figure in Sevilla’s backroom staff since 2000, Monchi also played a central role in the discovery and development of Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Ivan Rakitic and Jose Antonio Reyes, amongst many others.

Of course, Mislintat’s own directive was to find such undiscovered talents for Arsenal. Assuming the likes of Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira were ‘finds’ of his, it could easily be argued that he was performing this role well. However, for whatever reason, the German could not integrate himself into the club successfully. Now it is vital that the Gunners don’t allow an issue of instability to fester within their recruitment department. Without a clear-minded and consistent approach to the scouting and signing of players, Arsenal will fail to build a team with the qualities required, and Emery won’t stand a chance.

To replace Mislintat with Monchi, a figure who Emery has recently spoken about and clearly trusts, would be very smart. This is especially true when considering the current state of the Gunners’ finances. According to The Mirror, the club will only have £40 million to spend in the upcoming summer transfer window (presumably this figure would be significantly boosted should they qualify for the Champions League).

Add that to the fact Emery confessed the club could only afford to conduct loan deals during the January window. Furthermore, Ornstein also stated that Arsenal are the only Premier League club whose owners haven’t ever invested a penny of their own money into signings – which makes it clear that the Gunners can’t look to Stan Kroenke for aid.

All this makes Arsenal’s quest for value in the transfer market increasingly desperate. The need to buy and sell well, prioritising value for money, resale value, and the potential for growth, is paramount. Monchi is a man who can help the club do that, and it may be that Sanllehi should be applauded for acting decisively to clear Mislintat out of the way and allow for the Spaniard’s arrival.

Clearly, since last summer, not everything has gone to plan for Arsenal. The fact that the club’s head of recruitment was unsettled during a transfer window is concerning. However, all is not lost. If the club can bring in Monchi as soon as possible and are then able to give Emery all the tools he needs, there will be reason for optimism once again at the Emirates Stadium.

Alaba hints at Arsenal move after surprise Gunners revelation

[ad_pod ]

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has revealed that he is an Arsenal fan and has opened the door to a move to the club, per Bild via Goal.

The left-back has been with Bayern since 2010 and has made over 330 appearances for the club’s first-team.

What’s the word?

Alaba has emerged as perhaps the best left-back on the planet during his time with Bayern.

The Austria international is still only 26 but he has won the Bundesliga seven times, the Champions League once and the German Cup four times.

A key component of Bayern’s backline, he has now revealed that he would be open to the prospect of a move away in the future.

And, when pressed on where he would like to move to, he name-checked England, before revealing his childhood love of the Gunners.

“I can imagine trying something else but I really feel very comfortable at Bayern,” he said.

“Every year there a new challenges and new objectives and the pressure will always be there. I’m happy in Munich but of course, I can imagine seeing something else.”

When asked where he would like to play, he added: “Spain, England. In Spain it would be the two big clubs, I guess? Real or Barcelona. Also the big clubs [in England].”

Asked about Arsenal, and whether he supported them as a child, he said: “Yes I was [an Arsenal fan as a child]. When you’ve been Arsenal fan as a kid you will be one your whole life in some way.”

Dream signing

Alaba would be the ultimate summer signing for the Gunners.

Their reserves at left-back are depleted, with Nacho Monreal’s contract expiring at the end of the season and Sead Kolasinac failing to truly convince in the role.

A move for Alaba would solve that problem at a stroke and bring in a genuinely world-class player to strengthen Unai Emery’s team.

There are very few opportunities like this afforded to teams but the Gunners should attempt to grab it with both hands.

Emery may well have to convince the board to part with a hefty chunk of change to lure the Austrian to London but it simply must be worth a try.

Everton tracking Alfredo Morelos ahead of potential summer deal

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Everton want to sign Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

The Toffees are said to be keeping close tabs on the forward ahead of a prospective move in a coming transfer window.

Morelos has been prolific for Rangers, scoring 26 goals in 32 outings in all competitions for the Scottish giants this season.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think…

In total, he has netted 74 goals in 123 outings for the club, with Rangers now only two points behind league leaders Celtic.

Everton are said to be scouting him extensively prior to the summer, with Morelos valued at £6.75m by Transfermarkt.

A phenomenal forward

Morelos would be a major improvement for Everton.

Right now, they have Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Moise Kean and Oumar Niasse as their out-and-out strikers, along with Richarlison, who is often deployed on the wing.

Between them, this season, they have scored just 12 league goals – Kean and Niasse are yet to get on the scoresheet.

That’s less than half of Morelos’ total and, while he is playing in a weaker league in Scotland, he would add some electricity to Everton’s front line.

Not only is he an excellent, instinctive finisher but he is also a terrier out of possession, as evidenced by his six yellow cards this season.

Regardless of their next permanent manager is, there is no denying he’d add a valuable option at Goodison Park.

He would improve the Toffees’ front line in a big way and they should do all they can to bring him to Merseyside.

Meanwhile, Everton fans have reacted to an injury update on Theo Walcott.

Liverpool fans react as Jurgen Klopp confirms Dejan Lovren injury blow

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Dejan Lovren will miss the Premier League clash with Watford on Saturday because of a muscle issue, as per The Athletic’s James Pearce.

Following a tough campaign where he has suffered from injury and seen Joel Matip in the team ahead of him, the Croatia international was actually enjoying a decent run in the first team alongside Virgil van Dijk in recent weeks – and he has even received some rare praise from the fans, too.

He had started their previous seven Premier League matches and two in the Champions League prior to this update, although he came off in the first half of the win against Bournemouth last weekend with an issue.

With Matip also out it has left the Merseyside outfit a little short of options at the heart of their defence tomorrow, and potentially ahead of the festive period if it doesn’t turn out to be a short-term injury.

Joe Gomez will be expected to fill in against the Hornets today, but Liverpool supporters are certainly concerned by the update from their manager, with one labelling it as “very bad news”.

Other fans were clearly worried about the lack of depth in what is a key position right now, with one asking who there is to back them up. Youngsters Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jano Hoever are of course the answer to that.

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

Another suggested that signing a centre-back in the January transfer window may now need to be on the cards.

More supporters look at Klopp’s comment about not knowing a time-frame for Lovren’s injury, and are clearly fearing the worst.

One wrote back “months then”, and if that proves to be the case then it would be a major setback for the Reds.

In other news, Steven Gerrard provided a two-word response on Instagram to the news that Jurgen Klopp had signed a new deal with the Reds…

How Crystal Palace can beat Newcastle this weekend

Crystal Palace take on Newcastle United this weekend as they look to propel themselves into European contention.

On the chalkboard

The Eagles are currently ninth in the Premier League and could move level on points with fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur if they win and other results go their way.

How exactly, then, do Palace get all three points from Steve Bruce’s side?

Newcastle have been in decent form, drawing 2-2 with Manchester City, and beating Sheffield United and Southampton before their defeat to Burnley last weekend.

Palace, meanwhile, are unbeaten in four, drawing with Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford and beating both Burnley and AFC Bournemouth.

Nevertheless, the Magpies do have some weaknesses.

Per WhoScored, they have conceded seven goals this season from set-pieces; only Aston Villa have shipped more from such a situation.

Ironically, the Magpies are also very good from dead-ball situations, scoring seven goals of their own; only Liverpool and Bournemouth have scored more.

If Palace are to have any chance, they will have to defend set-pieces well and play for them too.

Newcastle are also vulnerable down the middle, conceding 71% of their shots from the centre of the pitch, and are also easily beaten on the edge of the box; 60% of the shots against them have come from within the 18-yard box.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

Work the ball

Palace need to work their way into the opposition half with swift build-up play.

Wilfried Zaha must be a major player in this gameplan.

He scored against Brighton at the weekend and is a pacey, brilliant dribbler. He averages 4.6 dribbles per game, per WhoScored, and pushing the ball out wide before instructing Zaha to cut inside and either offload or shoot, could be the key.

Newcastle have a decent defensive record, they have conceded fewer goals than Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur from open play this term, but Zaha is a wildcard.

He is in form – he has scored three goals in his last five outings – and will need to be again this weekend.

If Palace are to pick up three more points, they will need the Ivory Coast international at his best.

Meanwhile, Palace could well sell a flop in January.

Everton fans offer their views on Gylfi Sigurdsson speculation

According to Football Insider, Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is open to selling Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The report claims that the new manager is keen to boost his transfer kitty and has identified Sigurdsson as a player who could be sold for the right price, albeit a summer move being more likely than a winter one.

The Iceland international has started all four of Everton’s games under the leadership of Ancelotti but has not scored or registered an assist.

Watch Everton Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

In fact, Sigurdsson has managed just two goals and one assist in 23 appearances during the 2019/20 campaign, and it would be fair to say that a lot of the club’s supporters are keen for him to leave during the winter window.

A number of other supporters, meanwhile, have taken the chance to suggest other players that they also want to leave Goodison Park before the end of the month – with Theo Walcott, who has only managed nine goals in 72 games for the Toffees – a recurring name.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think…

Everton have shown improvement since Ancelotti’s arrival, winning two of their last three in the Premier League, but they have lost their last two fixtures in all competitions to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Another fan, meanwhile, said that he was worried that the club would not be able to shift Sigurdsson, due to his struggles during the current season.

Meanwhile, Everton are reportedly not interested in signing this particular midfielder during the January transfer window despite recent suggestions.
