Leeds’ striker conundrum will become trickier after promotion

We certainly don’t envy Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine’s job must be one of the most stressful in the country, and it isn’t made any easier by constant selection headaches that are being thrown his way.

Whether it’s fans complaining about Ian Poveda’s treatment or calling for Illan Meslier to start, there’s always something to debate when it comes to team selection at Elland Road.

Of course, one of the biggest talking points this term has been the striker position.

Early in the campaign the debate over Eddie Nketiah and Patrick Bamford raged on, and after the Arsenal man was recalled the conversation then became about Jean-Kevin Augustin.

However, things just got that much more complicated after Tyler Roberts’ incredible display off the bench on Saturday.

The 21-year-old netted a brace against Hull City to throw his hat into the ring as a contender for a place in the starting XI.

It’s not going to be easy for Bielsa to choose what to do, and it will only become harder if Leeds go up.

Indeed, if United go up, Augustin’s option to buy reportedly becomes an obligation for €21m (£18.25m), and then there will still be the Bamford vs Roberts debate alongside that.

To make matters even worse, not a single one of these forwards is proven at Premier League level.

Bamford is the only one to have played a decent number of games in England’s top-flight, but one goal in 27 outings doesn’t make for the best reading, while Roberts and Augustin have just one appearance between them at that level.

Ok, Augustin has scored goals in the Champions League before, but recent form suggests he’s dropped off, netting just one goal throughout the whole of 2019.

Bielsa’ current options will be giving him a headache, but his conundrum will only worsen if Leeds go up as he has to choose between taking a punt on three striking options who’ve never proven themselves at Premier League level or once again dipping into the market for a new number nine.

The latter option certainly won’t be cheap, especially if selling clubs know that Leeds need to sign a Premier League quality centre-forward, and it then becomes a separate debate between the new centre-forward or the options that already understand Bielsa’s system.

It seems that whenever it comes to Leeds’ front-line, nothing is straight-forward.

SWFC fans react to Bannan’s admission on De Bruyne

Sheffield Wednesday face the unenviable task of hosting Manchester City in the FA Cup this evening, and Barry Bannan is all too aware of the dangers posed by Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Citizens lifted the Carabao Cup trophy on Sunday and will likely be eager for more domestic success this season as they look set to miss out on the Premier League title.

City even had the luxury of resting key players at the weekend, including Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne, suggesting they could line up at Hillsborough, and Bannan is determined to stop the latter.

His aim to stop the Belgian is a target not many teams have managed to achieve this season, as the 28-year-old’s return of nine goals and 18 assists this year would suggest.

That has led many fans to reject Bannan’s idea that he and his teammates can reduce De Bruyne’s influence, with some choosing to mock the Scot’s comments.

A run of just two wins in 13 league games since Christmas indicates why there is such pessimism amongst the fanbase currently. The Owls have conceded 10 goals in five games, too, which suggests a team like the current Premier League champions could run riot against them.

Derby managed that on Saturday and led 3-0 at half-time with Wayne Rooney pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch, and some supporters think that a failure to deal with the 34-year-old shows that Wednesday will really struggle with De Bruyne, and one fan fears the worst because of that.

In other news, Owls’ fans have also been directing criticism at another player, but for a much bigger reason…

Is Diangana’s return a key factor to West Brom going up?

West Brom have been one of the best teams in the Championship throughout the season, as their league position would suggest, but they have been far from their best in recent weeks.

There are signs that the Baggies may be stuttering towards the promotion line and relying on rivals to drop points rather than running away with the title, particularly now that Leeds have overtaken them after last weekend’s results.

Slaven Bilic has provided great balance in his team, who have scored the most and conceded the third-least amount of goals in the division, yet his side have won just five of their 15 league games, not winning win their last three in all competitions.

However, their form may change due to the return from injury of Grady Diangana, who has played for just 24 minutes since mid-December, with West Brom’s results taking a slight hit without him.

He was spotted in training this week and could therefore be back soon, but will he provide the immediate boost that the Midlands outfit need? Our Football FanCast writers have assessed the impact he could have.

Lewis Blain

“West Brom need a spark to reignite their promotion cause and Grady Diangana is the enigmatic sort that can do exactly that.

“His role alongside Matheus Pereira in the number ten position was integral to their early-season fortunes – the Hammers loanee directly contributed to 11 goals before his injury, a feat that no other player bar the Brazilian playmaker can remotely match.

“Callum Robinson has done well in his absence on the left-wing, scoring twice and assisting one goal since joining in January but with Diangana back, he should be pushed upfront and utilised as a number nine instead of the faltering Hal Robson-Kanu, Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore.

“That would be Slaven Bilic’s dream, you’d imagine, and one that should steer the Baggies back on course for promotion, while he could win them the title too.”

Viji Jeevathalayan

“With West Brom stuttering big-time in recent weeks, Grady Diangana’s return from injury is a major blessing.

“The Baggies desperately need some new life breathed into their promotion charge this season just to ensure they get over the line come the end of the campaign, and Diangana could well be that player. Whilst of course it is far too big a burden to place West Brom’s promotion hopes on the shoulders of the 21-year-old, looking to him as a source of inspiration can do them the world of good.

“Even forgetting his footballing abilities, just the sheer fact of him seeing back on the training field and on the pitch can lift teammates and his manager alike. Diangana could hold the key for Slaven Bilic.”

Calling Premier League experts ONLY: Which year were these top flight clubs formed?

Charles Jones

“West Brom have to be praying that Grady Diangana’s return will act as the catalyst to spur them on to promotion.

“Whether or not it will remains to be seen, and I’m not all that confident that this will see a huge upturn in form from Slaven Bilic’s side.

“Callum Robinson has come in and been excellent, contributing to three goals in eight games, and with just nine games to go you have to wonder about Diangana’s match fitness after missing three months of action.

“The winger can be brilliant on his day, but I’m not sure he’s the remedy to the Baggies’ current issues. He will have to be better than ever before if he’s going to be the one to get Albion back on track.”

Kealan Hughes

“Grady Diangana has been an absolute revelation for the Baggies since arriving in the summer. His five goals and six assists is impressive but only tells a small story, as his direct running can often be such an effective outlet.

“To evidence that, West Brom lost just one out of the 19 league matches he played before picking up his hamstring injury, and that was away at Leeds, while the team also scored 41 goals in those matches.

“That is a very impressive return, and shows how the Baggies could benefit from his re-introduction. In fact, after failing to score in their previous two league games concern about the attack could begin to grow, and that means Diangana’s return may come just at the right time to ensure promotion.”

Meanwhile, WBA fans have been in discussion about the effectiveness of a player who has been a regular starter this term…

Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes stole the show again

To say that Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation for Manchester United, would arguably be an under-statement.

The January signing from Sporting CP has breathed new life into the Red Devils, and has been a source of inspiration ever since he stepped on to the pitch with a United shirt on.

Heading into the Europa League clash against LASK on Thursday night, Fernandes had provided three goals and three assists in eight total games for the club – in fact, since his arrival, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have remained unbeaten.

But whilst Odion Ighalo may have stolen the headlines for his sumptuous finish, it was Fernandes who stole the show for United on Thursday.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Playing in that number ten role once again, the Portuguese star helped run the action for Solskjaer’s men, and he was at the heart of everything that was good. It was no surprise to see the final score-line read 5-0, with United smashing in 22 total shots on goal.

And the side’s chief architect? Fernandes of course. As per Sofascore, he provided a whopping six key passes during the contest, including creating two big chances. His 80 total touches were the joint-most of any United player, whilst he also provided four accurate crosses and three accurate long balls.

It was a performance brimming with creativity and guile, and he got his customary assist when Ighalo fired home after receiving a pass just outside the area.

Speaking whilst on pundit duty for BT Sport, former United ace Owen Hargreaves waxed lyrical about what Fernandes has brought to the table.

“Every time he gets the ball he makes something happen. Fernandes is on fire, he created five chances in that first half. Like De Bruyne, he plays at his own speed, he’s never rushed, finds pockets of space. He just has a feel of when to do things.”

So whilst Ighalo may be the talk of the town for his technically brilliant goal, Fernandes was once again at his imperious best for United.

Meanwhile, this Man Utd starlet could be the future of the club.

Spurs remain interested in Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud

According to Corriere dello Sport, Tottenham remain interested in Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.

What’s the word?

The Lilywhites were linked with a surprising swoop for the France international towards the end of the January transfer window, with reports claiming the striker himself would be interested in a switch across London.

However, a deal failed to materialise before the end of the deadline, and Giroud stayed put. However, according to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, it may not be the last we’ve heard of the rumours a potential Spurs move.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

The report claims that Jose Mourinho’s side remain interested in signing the former Arsenal star, and that his personal “idea of staying in London has never waned”. It’s further suggested the likes of Lazio and Inter are also in the hunt to lure Giroud away from Stamford Bridge this summer.

Fixing mistakes

So Daniel Levy has the perfect chance to fix Spurs’ biggest blunder of the January transfer window.

Having seen Harry Kane fall to injury, the north Londoners desperately needed another centre-forward to help share the goal-scoring burden. Instead, they failed to do so, and were hit with the double whammy of losing Heung-min Son to a significant injury too.

To make matters even worse, Giroud has enjoyed a very fruitful period in front of goal since the close of the window, including scoring against Spurs themselves. Levy and Mourinho would no doubt have been ruing the fact that they missed out on the Frenchman.

But with reports claiming they remain interested in the £110k-a-week ace, Levy can ensure Spurs don’t make the same mistake a second time by landing Giroud in the summer. Whilst it won’t make up for the fact that he could have helped him for a couple of months before the postponement of football, he will represent a solid addition to their striking ranks.

Meanwhile, Spurs must avoid a swoop for this La Liga striker.

Rangers fans fume at Chris Sutton’s comments on potential wage cuts

Lots of Rangers fans have been left furious by Chris Sutton’s latest dig, as their former arch-rival insisted the club must prepare for wage cuts.

As the current worldwide crisis has brought football and sport as a whole to a standstill, clubs around Europe have been taking steps to ensure their future by cutting costs.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

Newcastle have already placed most of their staff on furlough, Barcelona players have taken a massive pay cut and now as Sutton writes in The Daily Record, other teams in Scotland are plotting similar measures.

However, there has been no word from Ibrox on potential cuts or plans to save money, and Sutton believes this is reckless, claiming this is only viable if Dave King “left a giant pit of money” that nobody knows about.

Of course, his comments have prompted quite the reaction online, with many feeling he is simply taking the opportunity to have a dig at his old foe.

Rangers: Fans laud Gerrard for his quotes on the SPFL

The SPFL farce continues, and it seems that Rangers have been on the losing end of the battle.

After failing to register their vote last week, Dundee have now changed their minds, it appears, which has seen all professional leagues below the Scottish Premiership ended as they stand. Whilst that is not yet the case in the top tier, it now gives the governing body the right to end the season now should they see fit – something Rangers have staunchly opposed.

All in all, it is a bit of a mess north of the border, with accusations of corruption flying around. Gers manager Steven Gerrard has been talking about the situation to Sky Sports News, and it is fair to say that he is far from impressed with how the authorities have handled the situation.

The Ibrox outfit’s supporters, at least, are very happy with his comments, and they have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts. One labelled Gerrard a ‘hero’ whilst another said that the Gers boss was ‘talking a lot of sense.’

Newcastle United: Fans rage at link for Trezeguet

Loads of Newcastle United fans are fuming at links to Aston Villa man Trezeguet after reports from BirminghamLive suggested that the northern club are one of three teams interested in the winger.

The article also states that Trezeguet is wanted in Turkey by Besiktas and Galatasaray and according to French Eurosport journalist Manu Lonjon, the latter are favourites to sign him but talks with Besiktas have been mentioned. However, Egyptian anchor Omar Rabie Yassin has claimed that Steve Bruce lodged a bid for him, as per the report.

Trezeguet has managed three goals and one assist in 24 appearances in the Premier League this season, but some of his stats in detail have not been quite so impressive. The 25-year old loses possession 9.1 times on average per top flight match, and has also failed to create a ‘big’ chance, according to Sofascore. He has also missed one ‘big’ chance himself and is only successful in 47 per cent of his dribbles, as per the website.

These Magpies are fuming at the possibility of signing Trezeguet:

Newcastle could make a statement of intent with Cavani move

According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle are eyeing up a stunning move for PSG striker Edinson Cavani this summer.

What’s the word?

As reports continue to indicate that the Magpies could finally be set for an end to the Mike Ashley era, Newcastle fans may be forgiven for beginning to start dreaming of a summer of high-profile signings.

And as per French publication Foot Mercato, the Tyneside club want to be “very offensive” in the transfer market, and that they have earmarked PSG marksman Cavani as a potential option up front.

The report claims that with the Uruguayan set to be out of contract this summer at the Parc des Princes, the Magpies “dream” of being able to lure Cavani to St James’ Park, and that to try to convince him of the move, they are ready to offer him a “gold contract”.

Statement of intent

Newcastle of course have got history when it comes to bringing one of the world’s most lethal goal-scorers to St James’ Park – Alan Shearer’s arrival back in the mid-1990s was certainly a major coup for the Magpies.

Shearer would go on to bag an incredible 182 goals in 374 games for the club, and is the Premier League’s all-time top goal-scorer.

Whilst Cavani may not be arriving at Newcastle with plenty of years left in the tank like Shearer, his prowess for scoring goals hasn’t deserted him. He has big-game experience with his time at PSG and Napoli, playing in the Champions League for numerous years now scoring 35 times in the competition.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Reports in previous months had even suggested that Manchester United were looking at potentially signing him, and there can be no question that Cavani has been one of the most prolific goal-scorers in European football – he has a career total of 341 goals in 556 games.

Bringing him to Newcastle would be the kind of marquee move that would be reminiscent of Shearer’s arrival – a major sign that the Magpies are intent on dining at the top table again, and competing for the best players on offer.
