Sheffield Wednesday’s sensational run of results since Steve Bruce took charge has seen the Hillsborough club dreaming of a play-off spot that looked impossible at the turn of the year.

Unbeaten in 12 Championship games, the Owls have come from nowhere to become the team no one wants to face, as they continue their march towards the top six.

Bruce told the Sheffield Wednesday official website he has urged the players to “enjoy the roller-coaster” and challenged them to “grasp” the unexpected play-off opportunity.

He said: “I’ve said to the players, we’ll dust ourselves down now, digest what’s ahead of us and see where we can go.

“We have got some big games here to look forward to and let’s hope we can come out on top.

“Let’s enjoy the roller-coaster and grasp it if we possibly can.

“With eight games to go, we’re going to need to win six of them probably, can we do it? We’ll try.”

The Owls were 17th in the Championship when Bruce took over, and it is testament to the job he has done that they currently sit 10th — only two points off the final play-off position.

But it will not be easy for Wednesday, with the Championship promotion race being the most open and exciting tussle for years, and Bruce’s men must to go to third placed Leeds and leaders Norwich on consecutive weekends in April.

The manager gave credit to his players for their attitude and working “tirelessly” since he arrived, claiming that both they, and the backroom staff have all “bought into what we are trying to do”

Bruce said: “Fair play to the players who have bought into what we are trying to do and also my staff, the ones I’ve inherited and the ones I’ve brought with me.

“They’ve worked tirelessly to turn the situation around and we’ve now given ourselves a chance and if you ask most sensible people a couple of months ago, they would say we’re not capable.”

With confidence being sky-high at the club — both on and off the pitch — and the run they have put together, you would not bet against Wednesday fulfilling their play-off dream.

But with the automatic promotion race currently a three-way shoot-out, those two games at Leeds and Norwich are likely to prove the stumbling block, with the pair certain to still have everything to play for.

But it does beg the question: Just where might they be if Bruce had taken the role immediately after it was offered to him, without delaying it until February?

Of course, health comes first, but it could still be a question of what could have been.

Loads of Rangers fans have been reflecting on the weekend’s action, and more than a few are calling for Steven Gerrard’s head after yet another disappointing display.

Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw by Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday, and if truth be told they really didn’t deserve anything more.

Gerrard switched things up at the interval by bringing on Eros Grezda and Borna Barisic, and they eventually drew level when Alfredo Morelos slammed home his 29th goal of the season.

Still, a 1-1 draw at home is simply not good enough, especially when it all but secures the title for Celtic.

Gerrard had an exciting start to his time in charge of the Gers, cruising through the Europa League qualification stages with plenty of drama along the way, but loads of fans have now had enough after this latest setback.

Arsenal defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has admitted to Swiss media outlet Neue Zürcher Zeitung that he is unsure of his future at the Emirates Stadium.

What’s the word, then?

The 35-year-old was speaking whilst on international duty with the Switzerland team he’s captain of, implying to the football world that he doesn’t know what his future holds as his contract in north London runs out at the start of the summer transfer window.

Lichtsteiner was only signed on a one-year deal by Unai Emery last year and has struggled to hold down a regular place in his first season with the Gunners, making just 12 appearances in the Premier League, a chunk of them from the substitutes’ bench.

The attacking right-back and right-wing-back who has also been known to cover in other positions around the defence has enjoyed a distinguished career in which he’s represented clubs such as Juventus and Lazio and collected 104 Switzerland caps, but it appears to be set for another turn at the end of 2018/2019.

It’s been a fun season, but it’s time to move on

While Lichtsteiner has also waxed lyrical about how much he’s enjoyed his first campaign at the Emirates, it should go down as the first and last.

For large parts of the season, the vastly-experienced star has been nothing more than a fringe figure and there’s very little to suggest his contribution would be greatly missed should he leave in the summer.

One simply can’t see the veteran picking up more minutes in his second term at Arsenal as he’s already comfortably past the average retirement age and not getting any younger, it would merely be a waste.

If Emery needs defensive cover on the right side, his man is a different player already on the club’s books, former England man Calum Chambers.

The 24-year-old has spent 2018/19 impressing in a number of positions at struggling Fulham and deserves to be kept when he returns in May, just as versatile as Lichtsteiner, Chambers is the ideal option to fill his role next campaign.

The Gunners would be making a very positive move by letting a young, fresh and hungry player replace an ageing one by keeping Chambers and letting the man 11 years his superior quietly leave with dignity in the summer having not been offered a new deal.

The loan star has fuelled speculation on Twitter that he could stay around for longer than this season by posting an image of some personalised Wednesday shin pads he was given whilst on international duty with Jamaica.

Fans have been busy tweeting the player in the replies section by asking for him to stay permanently once his loan deal from Chelsea comes to a close at the end of the season.

Some supporters have meanwhile issued statements declaring that the shin pads are specifically intended for the new campaign.

Hector has played 31 times in all competitions this term and has become a key figure under Steve Bruce at Hillsborough.

Sheffield United’s automatic promotion hopes were significantly dented after defeat against Bristol City last weekend.

However, there has been good news since with Jack O’Connell in training after injury, according to The Sheffield Star.

Blades fans would have been fearing the worst after his substitution on Saturday as the Yorkshire club let a lead slip and ultimately went on to lose.

However, even if there are fears over O’Connell aggravating his injury, he simply has to play against Preston this weekend.

Collapsed without him

Sheffield United’s collapse as soon as the 25-year-old defender went off last Saturday was incredibly alarming. It’s not often the Blades are rumbled quite as they were against Lee Johnson’s men, but the fact they conceded twice when one of their key men went off shows his influence.

The centre-back has been key this season and the team’s ability to somehow lose despite winning 2-1 gave evidence of why he may just be their most vital man.

O’Connell’s calf injury meant he had to be replaced by Marvin Johnson as Enda Stevens was forced into playing as the left centre-back. However, it was a disastrous change as the club conceded almost immediately after he left the pitch, proving the Englishman is near irreplaceable.

Pivotal figure

In a promotion race that has become so tight with Leeds, O’Connell is now going to become even more vital.

The 6 ft 1 man has missed just three matches this term, featuring 36 times for the Blades. He’s made a mightily impressive 4.8 clearances per game whilst winning 4.7 aerial duels at the same time.

Having recently just completed 100 consecutive league starts for the club, it’s clear they would be a worse side without him.

Wilder, via The Sheffield Star, spoke about him this week: “Obviously we’re not 100 per cent sure yet, so we’ll see how he goes on through the week. But we’re hopeful he’ll be okay for the game.”

Blades fans will, therefore, be praying that one of their most vital men is given the all clear. But to put it simply, Wilder must play him to ensure their promotion hopes remain on track.
