Liverpool will need luck on their side for a seventh Champions League triumph

Twenty-six teams qualify for the Champions League Group Stage, but only one can go on to win the trophy. Liverpool were that side in the 2018/19 season, overcoming Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid to lay claim to Europe’s biggest prize for a sixth time.

Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield natives will need luck on their side once again if they are to make it lucky number seven, though, as the Reds are currently seen as the underdogs, while their Premier League nemesis Manchester City get the backing of Sports Betting Dime and Sporting Life.

The Champions League has not been favourable for the Etihad Stadium side in recent years, and it remains the one trophy to escape their clutches, despite dominating the English landscape to become the first men’s side to record a domestic treble.

Liverpool know all about suffering heartbreak on the continent, too, having seen their hopes of a sixth European crown shattered in Kyiv, when Loris Karius had a night to forget. But dropping the German for Brazilian summer signing Allison Becker changed the Reds’ luck for the better, and Klopp finally held aloft his first major trophy in charge of the Merseyside outfit.

The Reds still had to ride their luck during their mission to Madrid, mind, as Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli were thrust into their path in the Group Stage. Bayern Munich and Barcelona then followed, with their clash in Catalunya leaving their dream in tatters.

No one would have expected what was to come on May 7, as a Divock Origi double inspired one of the greatest comebacks of all time, to send Lionel Messi’s Barcelona crashing out of the Champions League in shambolic fashion.

Yet one fairy-tale moment was not enough, as Tottenham travelled to Amsterdam the following night chasing a one-goal deficit, and things only got worse when Matthijs de Light and Hakim Ziyech fired past Hugo Lloris. Pochettino’s men would stun the giant-slaying youth of Ajax, though, as Spurs clawed their way back into the tie with Lucas Moura catching the hosts cold, only to better his efforts as stoppage-time expired to shatter the local’s hearts.

But it was not to be for Spurs, as Liverpool went on to lift the trophy in Madrid thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty and a late strike by Origi. They now have to wait until September before they can go again, and face an even greater challenge to reach back-to-back Finals.

Their opposition in last year’s Round of 16 Borussia Dortmund are one of many European heavyweights to strengthen this summer, with Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard brought to the Signal Iduna Park for less than they sold fringe star Christian Pulisic to Chelsea for. The Bundesliga runners-up are also slightly favoured by Sports Betting Dime in the stakes, whilst narrowly falling short of German rivals Bayern Munich.

Bayern last won a continental honour in 2013, and even the work of Guardiola failed to see the Bavarian side add their number six. Niko Kovac is in charge now, and has brought youth and talent to the Allianz Arena to replenish an ageing defence in Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard. Liverpool had the better of them in last season’s Round of 16, and they will be longing for better results in the future alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

PSG are desperate to take a European honour to justify their high-spending summers acquiring the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but the Champions League is the one competition their money cannot conquer, and Thomas Tuchel will be getting hot under the collar if they collapse on the continent again following March’s debacle at home to Manchester United.

The German will have to hope his luck is in, even if it means hitting the market again to find the winning formula. One that was evidently not there against the Red Devils.

Fans can test their luck throughout the tournament, as well, by backing the side they feel can go on to lift the trophy in Istanbul, and not just through traditional bets, but football-themed online slots. It is always best to find new slots sites through websites which compare different bonuses, though, as they provide a wider range of choice and the best rewards. And who knows, you too could be celebrating the result in Turkey, like Chelsea were in Azerbaijan when they lifted the Europa League.

The Blues are now chasing a new manager following Maurizio Sarri’s return to Italy, though, yet cannot be ruled out from putting on a show in the Champions League once they find their next leader.

A show is always guaranteed when it comes to the 13-time Champions League winners Real Madrid, who were a shadow of themselves in their latest quest having lost Cristian Ronaldo. But a new Los Blancos is on the horizon as young superstar Luka Jovic descends on the Santiago Bernabeu alongside Ferland Mendy and the £150million man Eden Hazard.

Europe has been where Real Madrid have shown their true colours in three of the past four seasons, and cannot be overlooked when it comes to their chances of adding a 14th crown to their collection.

Manchester City may be the favourites, but the Citizens’ struggles to turn domestic dominance into continental glory will ensure there is no easy ride for Guardiola and his men. It is the missing piece of their masterpiece, and one that needs to be filled sooner rather than later, yet it could easily continue to be a black hole with so many giants standing in their way.

Liverpool, too, once again face a mountain in front of their European mission, and it will be no easy route to another Champions League triumph. Klopp has the winning ingredients in his locker, but will have to play his cards right to see the desired results again. One thing’s for sure, though, the Champions League will be full of fireworks once more.

Aston Villa fans divided over Tom Heaton transfer speculation

[ad_pod ]

A clear ambition of Aston Villa’s in the summer transfer market is to sign a new goalkeeper.

They were first linked with a switch for Neil Etheridge, a goalkeeper they had a bid rejected for before The Sun claimed they were lining up a £20m swoop for Jack Butland.

However, John Cross now suggests that Tom Heaton is a target, revealing in The Mirror’s live transfer blog on 19 June (16:37) that they are interested in the stopper.

It was speculation that caused quite the debate on Twitter as Villa supporters were incredibly divided over whether they wanted to sign him.

Some fans viewed it as a positive with one commenting that it was good news and they needed to get it done as soon as possible.

Another focused on Jed Steer, hinting that an international level ‘keeper like Heaton would be a good replacement for the current Villa stopper.

But a further individual wanted Steer to get a chance rather than the 33-year-old who was also deemed too old by one tweeter.

The Burnley man featured 19 times for the Clarets last term and kept four clean sheets in the process.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Liverpool fans interested in signing Brazil star Everton after Copa America form

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans want the club to sign Brazilian attacker Everton after watching him during the weekend’s Copa America action.

The winger linked up with former Anfield man Philippe Coutinho to score during a 5-0 win over Peru that also had Liverpool favourite Roberto Firmino and Chelsea star Willian on the scoresheet.

The player has two goals and an assist so far in the tournament, which Brazil are looking to win as hosts.

“It reminds me of a bus seat!” – Watch a damning verdict on Chelsea’s new kit in the video below…

Everton plays his football with Gremio in his homeland but last week hinted that he would be open to a move to European football this summer.

The Reds are currently well stocked in attacking areas but with Jurgen Klopp and his squad looking to challenge in four competitions next season, adding a bit of depth certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Supporters of the Anfield club are clearly interested in seeing him link up with compatriot Firmino at Liverpool, taking to Twitter over the last 48 hours to share their thoughts…

Celtic: Paddy McNair can find a home at Parkhead

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas recently stated (as per Express) that Celtic need to make six new signings to maintain the gap on Steven Gerrard’s Rangers. One player who has been linked with a move to Parkhead is Middlesbrough’s Paddy McNair according to these reports from TEAMtalk.

The £4.05m rated ace, via Transfermarkt, has struggled for game time over the last couple of seasons. Throughout the 2018/19 campaign with Middlesbrough, the 24-year-old managed just 16 appearances in the Championship, and the season before with Sunderland he racked up the same amount. That means that over the course of two seasons in the Championship, the former Manchester United man has failed to appear in 60 league games.

He hasn’t managed to fire at Middlesbrough, appearing at right-back for four games, right-midfield for five games, centre-back for six games and at the heart of the midfield for seven games. He started just seven games in the entirety of last season’s Championship campaign and made nine appearances off the substitutes’ bench, as well as being an unused substitute in 25 fixtures, so he’s not really had a chance to catch form.

However, McNair was particularly impressive in his Sunderland days, scoring five times in his 16 appearances from both central midfield and defensive midfield. What makes his 2017-18 goals stat so impressive is the fact that Sunderland scored just 52 goals and came dead bottom of the Championship stats via WhoScored, with the club’s top scorer, Lewis Grabban, grabbing 12 goals.

He’s also shown that he can hold his own when it comes to stopping the opposition, as he averaged 1.1 tackles per game (WhoScored) during Sunderland’s 2017-18 campaign, which may not be too pleasing on the eye but four of his appearances came off the substitutes’ bench and he missed 13 games at the start of the season through injury. Therefore, averaging 1.1 tackles wasn’t all that bad, especially as John O’Shea, an established first-team member, averaged exactly the same amount of tackles per game despite starting 20+ more Championship games. Also, Sunderland averaged just 17.6 tackles per game for the whole season and McNair had to work his way in after being sidelined for almost a year, so he did pretty well.

The question is whether or not McNair would fit in at Celtic, and considering that Scott Brown is now 34-years-old and Olivier Ntcham was the subject of interest from Marseille last month (as per Daily Record), it would make sense for the Hoops to at least think about bringing in a central midfielder. And, Celtic’s pursuit of David Turnbull appears to have come to an end as his supposed move has reportedly collapsed (as per BBC Sport), so the Hoops now have another reason to potentially weigh up a move for McNair as an alternative.

He managed to bag four goals in five consecutive starts at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, so providing him with regular minutes could just unlock the best in him if his form at the Stadium of Light is anything to go by.

Celtic fans, do you want to sign Paddy McNair? Let us know!

Aurier suffers ridiculous injury while on international duty

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier sustained a rather bizarre injury while on international duty with the Ivory Coast, after slamming his fist on a table, per the Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

The Spurs right-back is currently participating in the African Cup of Nations with his country.

But he was not included in the starting XI for the clash with Mali on Monday due to an ankle injury.

Nevertheless, Aurier still managed to hurt his wrist by animatedly slamming his fist on a table at half-time with the score at 0-0, per the aforementioned report.

He was given a splint, the Mail claim, and they quote him as saying afterwards: “We got a little heated, because in the game we were not good. I hit the table and there you go.

“At home, when things go wrong, the parents scream at us. It’s the same thing. We had to have no regrets.”

Aurier’s countrymen went on to win 1-0, with Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha scoring the winner.

A hot-head

This figures.

Anyone who has watched Aurier play will understand that he can be prone to lapses of judgement.

Indeed, he was largely a deputy to Kieran Trippier throughout the 2018/19 season and due to a combination of injury woes and not being selected, he made just eight Premier League appearances.

Aurier’s time at Spurs, though, has largely been characterised by rash fouls and he was even slammed by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in the 2017/18 season after giving away a penalty in a Champions League clash with Juventus.

Ferdinand said, per BT Sport via the Mail: “As a defender, I have never really rated Aurier. He’s rash and he’s let his team down far too often.”

No one can be surprised that he hurt himself in perhaps the rashest way possible, then.

Man Utd paying world-record fee for Maguire could galvanise them

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

When you’re down and out, sometimes all you need is a bit of a kick-start to help get things going again. Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson from Old Trafford, Manchester United have been in a bit of a slumber.

The Red Devils are well and truly the sleeping giants of the Premier League and have had to sit and watch their two greatest rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool, win the two biggest titles on offer last season.

After an underwhelming end to the campaign, United’s struggles have seemingly continued into the transfer window. Aside from deals for Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain distant from completing another significant signing, whilst the futures of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku remain uncertain.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

Indeed, the off-the-pitch problems with wanting the Glazer family out is certainly symbolic of the entire mood surrounding the club.

But, with reports suggesting United’s main target at centre-back, Harry Maguire, will cost a world-record fee for a defender, there may be a silver lining to it all. Whether the England international is adjudged to be worth the £80m to £90m being quoted for him is rather irrelevant; more important would be the statement behind United getting a gargantuan deal done for the 6 foot 4 defender.

The club are in dire need of a blockbuster move that can help propel them back into the debate surrounding the biggest and best clubs. Being able to parade a world-record fee for a defender could have the sort of galvanising effect that they desperately desire; it would reinforce the mentality of United being one of the elite sides, a fact that has arguably slipped the mind of most during their recent struggles.

Aside from the potential transformational effect Maguire could have on the side on the pitch, United would feel like a powerhouse once more off it. It may be a cliche, but sometimes looking good on the outside is the key to feeling good on the inside.

Paying a world-record amount for a new signing would generate headlines and bring Solskjaer’s side back to the centre of attention once more. It would reinvigorate the fans, the players and the club as a whole. And boy do United need it.
