149 games. 15 goals. 23 assists. Since breaking into the Arsenal first-team, Alex Iwobi didn’t necessarily set the world alight in his time at the Emirates. The Nigeria international had come through the Gunners academy and there was understandably an element of goodwill there, but his numbers never really stacked up to some of the more illustrious names in the Premier League.

Unai Emery revealed that following discussions with his left-backs over who they preferred playing with on the flank, Iwobi was the man they all unanimously pointed to. But in a team attempting to compete for titles both domestically and abroad, to not even break past the five-goal mark in the Premier League as one of the side’s attacking players is nothing short of an abject failure.

So for the Gunners to fleece Everton out of a reported £34m for the 23-year-old is excellent business. And perhaps even more so than the financial element of the deal, it smacks of a ruthlessness the north London side have been needing for so long. Getting rid of players who simply didn’t perform at a high enough level and not constantly handing them chance after chance to redeem themselves.

It was common knowledge Arsenal wanted a new winger for the season and they duly got one with the arrival of Lille star Nicolas Pepe. The Ivory Coast international’s arrival upgraded the Gunners’ attack no-end, and perhaps added a sense of perspective on the lack of progress Iwobi had made since his breakthrough into the senior side in the 2015/2016 season.

Losing one of the club’s academy products is always a difficult thing to do, but the Gunners’ ruthlessness in shipping Iwobi out on deadline day is a refreshing act of brutal honesty and decision-making.

For much of last season, Jordan Ayew cut a forlorn figure up top.

The Ghana international struggled for the majority of the campaign, scoring just one league goal whilst drawing criticism from some supporters who had grown tired of his ineffective performances.

Speaking of ineffectiveness, it was this particular adjective that the former Swansea man was not against Everton on the opening day.

Ayew was voted as Man of the Match by the Eagles supporters for his efforts against the Toffees, and it is hard to argue with that decision given how well he played.

In attack alongside Christian Benteke, the 27-year-old was one of Palace’s most influential players on the day.

The 6 foot forward was involved in some of the best attacking moments for Roy Hodgson’s side, having had one shot, recorded one key pass and embarking on one dribble against the Merseysiders.

He had a chance to equal last season’s goal tally in just the first game of the campaign when Christian Benteke put him one on one with Jordan Pickford, although unfortunately, the England international was equal to his effort.

Speaking of Benteke, it was alongside the Belgian on Saturday where Ayew looked far more potent than he did when alone last season, as the former Liverpool striker was unavailable for a large period through injury – he missed 22 games last term with a knee problem, meaning he was barely around to play alongside the Ghanaian.

Ayew is a fairly diminutive figure on the pitch and doesn’t win a massive amount of aerial duels, so having him next to a more physical presence in Benteke seemed to do him a world of good in terms of getting involved – as aforesaid, it was Benteke who slid Ayew in on goal with some nice combination play, so you can definitely argue that there is a potential partnership there.

After a troublesome campaign last term, Palace look to have found a way to get a bit more out of Ayew.

وقال مورينيو في تصريحات نقلتها صحيفة “إيفينينج ستاندرد” البريطانية: “العلاقة كما هي مُنذ اليوم الأول، يعتقد الجميع أننا سنبلي بلاءً أفضل والجميع يؤمن بأن أفضل الأشياء في انتظارنا”.

وواصل: “كنا نبحث عن السعادة الممكنة، لكن السعادة لم تكن تريدنا!، لكن سنواصل البحث، ومواصلة العمل الجاد”.

وأتم تصريحاته قائلًا: “أريد أنّ أعطى الناس كل السعادة، وللمالك واللاعبين والمُشجعين وكل شخص مُرتبط بـ توتنهام، أشعر دائمًا أنني واحد مُنهم، وأعمل معهم وأريد أن أعطي السعادة لهؤلاء الأشخاص”.

It is still hard to comprehend exactly how Borussia Dortmund didn’t lift the Bundesliga title last term. At the half-way point, they led Bayern Munich by six points, and when that gap went to seven with 14 games to play, it all looked a little too easy for Die Schwarzgelben. In the end, though, the inevitable happened: the Bavarian juggernaut went on a 14-game unbeaten run to end the campaign, whilst BVB crumbled under the pressure. Once all was said and done, it was just not to be for Lucien Favre and co. This time around, however, will be a very different story.

Whilst watching the two sides last season, one of the main differences between the squads was the levels of experience. In Bayern’s, there were players such as Mats Hummels, David Alaba, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski, men who have been around the block more than once and know all about what it takes to win.

Dortmund, meanwhile, were led by standout performances such as those from 20-year-old Achraf Hakimi and 19-year-old Jadon Sancho. The only player aged 30 years or more to make 10 or more appearances was Lukasz Piszczek. In fact, the Poland international was only one of three players over 29 in the whole squad.

Of course, that has not changed during the off-season, but the Dortmund men have learnt a valuable lesson: the pain of defeat. This in itself is almost as important during a career as the victories.

They have also been clever in the transfer market and did all of their business very quickly. Nico Schulz, who performed well enough with Hoffenheim last season to earn a Germany call-up, joined in defence, whilst Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt were brought in to boost an attack that already did so fantastically last time around – Götze, Reus, Paco Alcacer and Sancho racked up 88 goals and assists in the league between them.

BVB’s pre-season form is another strong indication of improvement. They have won every single warm-up match, including a 3-2 victory against Champions League-winners Liverpool. They then followed that up with a 2-0 triumph against Bayern in the German Super Cup on Saturday, which will be another psychological boost for Die Schwarzgelben.

Above all, though, there is a confidence coming from the top that it is their time. Comments from the club’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke show just that. In an interview with German outlet Zeit, he spoke about why last season’s performance has given the club a “platform” to take the next step. Whilst last term the title challenge came as a bit of a surprise, the goal ahead of the new campaign is simple: win the Bundesliga.

As it stands, Bayern are still the champions and, after having been so for the past seven seasons, there are still remnants of that aura of invincibility about them. But the times are changing in Germany. The Bavarians are not the force they once were, and Dortmund are ready to step up and take their place at the very top.

The Neymar Junior saga has been the talk of the transfer window all summer long. And now, less than a week from the official closing of the market in La Liga, Barcelona seem to still be in the hunt for the Brazil international – although ESPN report that the Spanish giants and PSG are still at an impasse.

While we are still waiting for the resolution of this situation, the Barcelona fans on Twitter eagerly expecting the culmination of a transfer saga that has been going on for far too long have been discussing whether they’d welcome Neymar back at the Camp Nou.

Having arrived in a £50m deal from Crystal Palace, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has hit the ground running at Manchester United.

The England U21 international has firmly established himself as the Red Devils’ first-choice right-back, and he has certainly rewarded the faith of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with some excellent performances.

The 21-year-old has registered 26 tackles already this season – the highest of any player in the Premier League, and six ahead of nearest challenger Ricardo Pereira.

Such has been his impressive form, Wan-Bissaka received a call-up to the England senior squad, but a back problem has now forced him to pull out.

The Guardian further claim the full-back is now being considered as a doubt by United to face Leicester in the Premier League on September 14.

After hearing the injury update on Wan-Bissaka, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their concerns about the situation.

Many Red Devils supporters admitted they are deeply worried about their chances of securing a victory against the Foxes if the 21-year-old is ruled out.

Some fans appeared to fear the worst, and insisted they are “well and truly finished”.
