Wolves managed to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday as they defeated rock-bottom Watford at Molineux.

The result saw them rise to 13th from 19th thanks to goals from Matt Doherty and Daryl Janmaat.

The right wing-back opened the scoring inside the first 20 minutes, meeting Pedro Neto’s driven pass across goal before turning provider for the second as his cross was met by Morgan Gibbs-White, whose header found its way in via the Watford defender just after the hour mark.

Nuno Santo’s men have actually only lost two of their seven Premier League matches, but their position in the league told a different story considering it was a world away from their seventh-place finish last campaign.

Over their last two domestic matches, Wolves have reverted back to the 3-4-3 system which saw them win the Championship in 2018.

Football FanCast have previously mentioned why the Portuguese boss should stick with it going forward, and even though he’s unlikely to have read the article, he’s done precisely that.

Their performance against Watford was defensively sound hence the clean sheet, but further details provide an insight into why they should again continue with a similar setup against reigning champions Manchester City.

As expected from a Pep Guardiola team, they dominate the league for possession percentage per game at 60%, and no club is higher for passing success either at 89.3%.

Therefore, it seems likely that Wolves will have their backs against the wall.

On Saturday, the west Midlands club sat back and looked to hit the Hornets on the counter – they recorded just 39.1% possession with a total of six shots in the match, yet came away with a 2-0 victory.

That gameplan matches up well with the test of City.

Obviously, there is a different level of quality on offer as Watford are the worst team in the league currently, but it bodes well for encouragement.

When Nuno deployed the 3-4-3 against them at Molineux last season they managed to earn a point with just 28.9% possession, so there’s no reason why it can’t work again – Norwich have already shocked them once, Wolves can make it twice.

Aston Villa’s struggles in the Premier League continued last weekend and their next game comes to a side that sits just one place above them in Norwich City.

For the third time this season, the west Midlands club threw away a game from a winning position as they twice led against Burnley before Sean Dyche’s men fought back to earn a point at Villa Park.

It means that Villa have picked up just five points from a possible 21, currently leaving them in the relegation zone.

Things were made worse on Saturday when Matt Targett, who had only just returned from one injury, picked up another meaning Neil Taylor came back into the side.

On the Chalkboard

Villa’s summer arrival was putting in a decent showing with a WhoScored rating of 7.01, one key pass and one successful tackle.

Taylor, on the other hand, came in and mustered up a 5.94 rating and failed to match the figures of Targett.

It’s not the first time this season that the Welshman has looked particularly poor at left-back, so if the injury sees him out of the Norwich game, it may be wise to play someone else there.

Kortney Hause has struggled for game time since joining the club permanently this summer, only playing in their two Carabao Cup matches.

The centre-back has played on the left before in his career, 32 times according to the games recorded by Transfermarkt, 25 of which have been in the Championship where he’s kept eight clean sheets.

That suggests he’s more than capable at deputising in Targett’s absence – let’s face it he can’t be much worse than Taylor.

The 30-year-old ranks second-bottom in the squad for average rating of any player that has featured in five or more matches this season while five players record more tackles on average per game than he does, which is rather poor for a defender.

With Taylor underperforming, fielding someone else there certainly makes sense. Changing things up could just spark an upturn in fortune for the Villans.

A number of West Ham United fans have been on social media discussing the form of Argentina international Manuel Lanzini, and it would be fair to say that there are some mixed opinions when it comes to the attacker.

In seven Premier League appearances this season, the 26-year-old has contributed zero goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, he struggled to make his mark against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon – registering just one shot before leaving the field in the 68th minute.

The game will go down as a real missed opportunity for the Hammers as they had led before Palace turned things around in the latter stages.

Manchester United’s list of captains over the past couple of decades reads like the footballing version of Mount Rushmore. The likes of Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney to name but a few. True club legends who will go down in folklore as being some of the greatest players that have ever donned the famous red shirt.

And then you get to the present day. October 2019. The most successful side in Premier League history has 34-year-old Ashley Young wearing the armband. If you were living under a rock and you didn’t know that, you would be forgiven for spitting out your drink or doing a massive double-take. The 20-time league champions, and three-time Champions League winners have a man who is infamously remembered for that pigeon incident.

But in all seriousness, the club’s recent decline since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson back in the summer of 2013 is perfectly encapsulated by the state of the captaincy. In the glory years under their iconic Scottish manager, United had leaders of men who dominated on the pitch, and in the dressing room too. And when we take a deeper look at the Red Devils’ recent history, it really shines a painful light on the direction the side have gone.

1990s

A decade that included the famous treble-winning side of 1999, United boasted some serious leaders – and Cantona. Robson, Steve Bruce and Keane all had a will to win that was unmatched, and it’s precisely the quality the current United team are lacking. Last season alone, the Red Devils contrived to lose ten Premier League games. Having a captain who detests the taste of defeat and ensures that every player feels the same is exactly what’s needed.

Too often in recent years, the side have lacked that presence and subsequently just melted away.

2000s

Another period of United dominance, this era highlights more than any other that a captain doesn’t necessarily have to be the best player on the pitch.

An ageing Keane and Gary Neville wore the armband for the entirety of the 2000s, and you would be hard pressed to find someone who would have suggested that either of them were ever the side’s greatest player. But even with their more limited technical abilities in mind, the duo commanded the respect of the dressing room. Perhaps just as importantly, they had won the respect of the fans too.

Young may have the admiration of his teammates, but he certainly isn’t flavour of the month with the Old Trafford faithful. The veteran was booed on the club’s pre-season tour earlier this summer, and has been slammed for his below-par performances. How does a club rally around its figurehead when it’s main man gets a roasting on a weekly basis.

2010s

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the one above just says it all, doesn’t it? The current captain of United, being consoled by a manager who got Cardiff relegated. Of course, it is absolutely unfair to scapegoat Young for the Red Devils’ problems, but he is the perfect symbol of it. Not good enough to be in the squad, let alone the first-team, and yet apparently the most influential man. The 2010s have seen six separate players wear the armband, and the previous three campaigns have seen a new captain each season. In 2017/2018, it was Michael Carrick. Last season it was Antonio Valencia. And now, it’s Young.

The sheer turnover in quick succession proves the club don’t appear to have a long-term plan in place and are simply making things up as they go along.

Verdict

In a truly damning indictment of how far things have fallen, Solskjaer’s timid explanation about Young taking the role of captain following the departure of Antonio Valencia spoke volumes.

“You can probably call it that. David’s obviously in contention, (but) Ash, when he’s on the pitch, will carry the armband. When Ash starts, he’ll be carrying the armband”

Doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence now, does it? The captaincy – whether it still means a great deal now or not – should be essentially unanimous. No debate. No questions. No room for concern. But such is the lack of leadership that has festered into the United squad and hierarchy, Solskjaer couldn’t even be steadfast in his confirmation.

In the 26 glorious years he was in charge, did Ferguson at any point hesitate about the man he would call skipper?

Sure he may have had falling outs or personal disagreements with some of them, but there was no doubting who he wanted to lead the side. But just as United stumble around on-the-pitch, the complete disarray the captaincy has become is a painful eye-opener into just how far things have fallen.

ووفقًا للموقع الرسمي بالأهلي، فإن مجلس الإدارة تقدم بشكوى ضد إمام عاشور بعد التجاوزات غير اللائقة والخارجة عن كل قواعد الأخلاق التي ارتكبها المشار إليهم عقب مباراة الأهلي والزمالك في دوري الشباب، التي أقيمت أمس بملاعب النادي الأحمر بفرع مدينة نصر.

أرفق الأهلي بشكواه “فلاشات” تضمنت خمسة فيديوهات للاعب إمام عاشور وزملائه، وهم يكيلون السباب والشتائم والألفاظ الخارجة للنادي الأهلي ومجلس إدارته ورئيسه الأسبق وكيان النادي وجماهيره.

جاء في شكوى النادي أن التصرفات والألفاظ والشتائم التي جاءت على لسان عاشور وزملائه تمثل أفعالًا مشينة وانتهاكات دخيلة على الوسط الرياضي وتثير الفتنة بين الجماهير، ومخالفة لكل قواعد الأخلاق وتؤثر على سلوكيات الشباب، بل وتخالف بالأساس لوائح الاتحادين المصري والدولي لكرة القدم فيفا، وكذا لوائح الانضباط والأخلاق لاتحاد الكرة.

وتضمنت الشكوى أيضًا أنه لم يكن هناك مبرر على الإطلاق لقيام إمام عاشور وزملائه بهذه التجاوزات، وتوجيه الاتهامات إلى شخصيات قيادية في النادي الأهلي، وكَيْل السباب والشتائم بألفاظ يعاقب عليها القانون، خاصة أن المباراة أقيمت على ملاعب الأهلي ولم تشهد أية أحداث عارضة، وجرت في إطار تنافسي على بطولة الجمهورية.

وأضافت شكوى الأهلي:  “لكن عاشور اعتاد التجاوز في حق الغير، فقد سبق أن قام بالتعدي على لاعب الأهلي وليد سليمان عقب مباراة السوبر المصري التي أقيمت في الإمارات بالركل بالقدم، وبشكل فيه انتهاك لكل قواعد الأخلاق والأدب، خاصة أن وليد سليمان كان ملقى على الأرض. وقامت لجنة الانضباط والأخلاق بإيقاف عاشور «عشر» مباريات عقب هذه الواقعة، التي كان يرى الكثيرون أنها تستوجب عقوبة أكبر”.

وطالب الأهلي في شكواه ضد لاعب الزمالك وزملائه بتطبيق اللوائح ونصوص القانون التي جاءت في هذا الشق، حرصًا على الأجواء التنافسية والعلاقة بين جماهير الناديين، خاصة أن إمام عاشور اعتاد التجاوز في حق الآخرين في وقائع عديدة ولم تردعه العقوبات السابقة.
