Crawley Town 3-0 Leeds: Pablo Hernandez in abject form on Sunday

When Marcelo Bielsa picked his team to face Crawley Town on Sunday afternoon, he will have been looking towards his senior players to lead by example.

Starting alongside the less experienced players in Ian Poveda, Jamie Shackleton and Leif Davis were likes of Kiko Casilla, Kalvin Phillips and Pablo Hernandez.

However, all three of them failed to put in a performance of any merit.

Casilla was disastrously bad between the posts and was at fault for the first two goals, letting the ball through his hands for the opening strike and then somehow allowing it to squirm through him for the second.

Yet, Phillips was also laboured and lacking confidence. A host of his passes went astray and the England international allowed Nick Tsaroulla past him far too easily when Crawley took the lead.

The blame can’t be directed entirely at the defence, though. Going forward, Leeds wasted numerous chances in the first half which considering they had a £43m duo in Rodrigo and Helder Costa up front, simply wasn’t good enough.

The supply line from Hernandez wasn’t particularly good, however, and he deserves the brunt of the criticism. He has started just twice in the Premier League this season and his performance at Crawley summed up why he hasn’t played more often.

Hernandez has been a wonderful servant to Leeds but on Sunday, the 35-year-old was particularly poor, putting in a display that was described as “rusty” by Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross at full-time.

It’s hardly surprising that was the case. The Spaniard hasn’t started a game of football since the 4-1 defeat to Leicester at the beginning of November and it showed.

He lost the ball a mammoth 31 times, failing to provide a much-needed spark for Bielsa. Hernandez did manage three key passes but he was off his game far too many times.

The experienced midfielder was successful with just 67% of his passes and fired his only two attempts at goal wide of the target.

Because of the way Leeds were chasing the game in the second period, he had to come deeper than Bielsa would have liked. Consequently, he was playing long balls forward rather than short passes. That meant that he tried a colossal 22 long balls – 11 of which were successful.

Hernandez might be ageing but this was the perfect opportunity to show why he is deserving of a place in the Premier League side.

On a day where the manager needed his experienced players to stand up and be counted, one of his star men was anonymous.

The veteran deserves to be benched against Brighton next weekend. Bielsa will not be happy at all.

AND in other news, Worse than Casilla: Leeds star who lost possession 24x massively betrayed Bielsa…

Bielsa made Diego Llorente mistake

Leeds United managed to bank an important win on the road last night thanks to goals from Raphinha and Jack Harrison. The Whites narrowly scraped through and kept the spoils for themselves against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The win will have undoubtedly lifted morale around the Leeds camp after breaking their three-game streak of defeat. However, not everything that came out of that match was a positive.

Elusive summer signing Diego Llorente started just his second match for his new club but was forced off the pitch after ten minutes with an injury. This will be massively frustrating for everyone involved with the club and Marcelo Bielsa, but the Argentinian must take some responsibility upon reflection.

Huge Llorente blow for Leeds

With the Whites currently without Robin Koch, they are struggling for options in defence. Liam Cooper has recently been paired up with Luke Ayling due to their lack of fit centre-backs.

Having Llorente back in action was a huge boost for Leeds, who are still a way away from having Koch back in the squad. However, it seems Bielsa got too eager to bring the former back into the squad and as such, he has now suffered yet another injury setback.

According to Phil Hay, Leeds doubled up on their doses of Bielsa’s trademark Murderball last week and Llorente was involved in these sessions. This in itself is hugely risky given the demanding nature of the training game, never mind when it involves a recently injured player.

The £22,000 per week new signing will have Leeds fans hugely frustrated right now. Llorente has missed a total of eight matches so far this season due to muscle injuries and could now be set to spend even longer on the sidelines, as per Transfermarkt. For an exciting £23million summer signing, not a lot of positives are surrounding him right now.

Starting Llorente was a huge risk from Bielsa given the issues they’ve had in that position, and one that did not need to be taken given they are comfortably sitting in mid-table in the Premier League standings.

Considering the Spaniard played just ten minutes against Newcastle before being forced off, it can’t be said that he played any part in the win either. The manager did not have to risk his fitness at all.

Leeds’ Patrick Bamford was woeful vs Newcastle

With ten goals in 19 Premier League games this season, it’s fair to say Patrick Bamford has proven that he can lead the line for Leeds United at the highest level.

There were big question marks over whether the former Chelsea starlet could do the business in the top-flight, especially given how wasteful he was at Championship level – last season saw him miss a staggering 33 official big chances, which was almost double the man in second, Lewis Grabban (18).

But whilst Bamford has done well thus far, his anonymous display against Newcastle United on Tuesday night proved why Marcelo Bielsa’s side desperately need to dip into the transfer market in these final few days to bring in a new centre-forward who can provide them with another option or just add some extra competition.

Bamford struggled massively to get involved in the game against the Magpies, managing just 22 touches of the ball and completing only 13 accurate passes, both of which were the lowest of any starter on the pitch for Leeds, even less than goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

In their post-match player ratings, Leeds Live gave him a measly 5, saying: “Frustration showed with the lack of service coming into him when Leeds were in the box throughout the first half. Drifted out of the game entirely in the second half save for the dallying which gave Newcastle the chance to score.”

With reports linking Leeds with a move for the likes of Fiorentina striker Christian Kouame in this January transfer window, Bamford’s performance at St James’ Park would have left Victor Orta in no doubt about what must be done.

The Whites don’t necessarily need to bring in a new starting number nine, but the fact that Bielsa resorted to bringing on Tyler Roberts – a player whose long-term future at Elland Road remains somewhat unclear and has yet to score in the Premier League – says it all about Leeds’ lack of depth in that position.

Just days remain in this January transfer window, and time is running out for Orta to strike and solve a key Bielsa concern.

Meanwhile, this Leeds monster was Bielsa’s real hero against Newcastle…

É hora do recomeço.

Vinicius must star in Harry Kane absence

Spurs striker Carlos Vinicius looks set to finally be given an opportunity to impress in the Premier League with Harry Kane set for a spell on the sidelines, and it is an opportunity the Brazilian must take if he wants to stay with the North London club for the long-term.

Kane picked up an ankle injury in the midweek defeat against Liverpool and looks unlikely to feature against Brighton on Sunday evening, meaning Vinicius could be in line for his first Premier League start.

The Brazilian, who joined on loan from Benfica during the summer transfer window, has been limited to just four substitute appearances in the top-flight, totalling 25 minutes so far this season, with the majority of his appearances coming in cup competitions.

The 25-year-old was excellent in Spurs’ Europa League group stage campaign, contributing three goals and three assists in five appearances, resulting in a superb 7.41 average rating.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-and-rumours” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, injury latest and more!”]

He also bagged a hattrick in the 5-0 win against Marine in the FA Cup recently, but the extraordinary form of Kane has meant he has perhaps been unfortunate to barely feature in the Premier League.

However, whilst the England captain’s injury is obviously worrying for Spurs, it means fans, and Mourinho, will be able to get a real look at Vinicius to see what he can do in the Premier League, and his performances in the coming games could prove to be the deciding factor in whether or not the Lilywhites opt to make his move permanent in the summer.

Perhaps if he can continue his form from the Europa League in the Premier League, then he could prove to be the Portuguese manager’s saviour, as he attempts to improve their poor form of late.

Spurs hold the option to buy Vinicius, but he will cost more than £40 million if they want to do so, which is a hefty price for someone who has been something of a bench-warmer so far this season.

Therefore, the £18 million-rated Vinicius must seize this rare opportunity to impress, in the hope that he can convince Mourinho he is worth playing alongside Kane when the 27-year-old returns from injury, otherwise, it is difficult to see him staying at Spurs for the long term.
