Wilshere undergoes surgery

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has undergone surgery on his troublesome ankle, and is now facing a period of up to four or five months on the sidelines.

The England international has missed The Gunners’ start to the season, and will now begin rehabilitation to get fit again.

The news of the operation was released by the North London club, who will miss him over upcoming months.

“Jack Wilshere has this morning undergone ankle surgery at a central London hospital,” a statement on the club’s official website reads.

“Under the care of two world renowned surgeons, Jack has had the stress fracture of his right ankle repaired. The initial indications are that the surgery has been successful and Jack will now undergo a prolonged period of rehabilitation.

“It is envisaged that Jack’s rehabilitation will take a period of four to five months,” it concluded.

The player is obviously disappointed at a protracted period away from the game, but has kept a positive mindset after the procedure.

“I’ve had the operation this morning and all went well. My ankle is a little bit sore, but I’m already looking forward to working hard to get fit and playing again.

“I would also just like to say thanks for the many messages of support I have received from you – the fantastic Arsenal supporters. See you all soon at the Emirates,” he concluded.

Wilshere’s absence can be accounted for one of the reasons for Arsenal’s poor start to the campaign, with a home fixture against Olympiakos next up for The Gunners on Wednesday.

Striker only at Arsenal for two years

New Arsenal signing Park Chu-Young has revealed that he will have to return to South Korea to complete mandatory national service in two years time.

It is law in the Asian country that all men must complete 21 months in the army before the age of 30, and if the attacker refuses to do so could face imprisonment or even extradition from his homeland.

The striker signed for the Emirates outfit from Monaco for £4 million in the recent transfer window, but is realistic that he cannot stay in London for longer than two years.

“It isn’t really possible to be excused. That can’t and won’t happen, which is another reason I chose to come here,” he told Mirror Football.

“I’ll have to leave Europe in two years’ time and I thought this would be an incredible place to finish. My national service is inevitable and there is no point in thinking anything else.

“I’ll still be playing games, but for an army club. I think it’ll be difficult to return to Europe after that, although if something interesting comes up, you never know,” he stated.

The South Korean has largely been in the fringes since his summer move, but will look to contest a starting place in Arsene Wenger’s side as they host Sunderland on Sunday.

Arsenal 3-0 West Brom – Match Review

Arsenal made it four wins on the spin with Robin Van Persie scoring once again in a 3-0 win over West Brom at the Emirates Stadium to stay within touching distance of the top four.

Gunners captain Van Persie was on hand to open the scoring mid way through the first half with his 28th goal in 27 Premier League games in 2011 before Thomas Vermaelen doubled the lead just before half time. Mikel Arteta made sure of the points after the break to give Arsene Wenger’s side their sixth win in eight games since they were thrashed 8-2 by Manchester United at Old Traffford in August. Roy Hodgson’s Baggies lost for the second consecutive week after losing last Saturday at home to Liverpool and were no match for an Arsenal side that barely got out of second gear. It Van Persie who was the inspiration for the home side as he continues to revel in his role as skipper and central striker.

The Dutchman was a handful for the Albion defence all afternoon with his intelligent link up play with midfield proving too hot for the visitors to handle. It was his opener on 22 minutes that settled a hot tempered start to the game that was littered with fouls and free kicks. Theo Walcott was the architect as he made inroads towards goal before seeing his shot parried by Ben Foster with Van Persie  on hand to tap home the rebound. With the deadlock broken the Gunners looked to increase their dominance on the game and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead just six minutes before half time. Van Persie was involved once again turning provided this time seeing his cute pass finished with aplomb by Vermaelen for the Belgians first goal of the season. It could have been three on the stroke of half time but Arteta could only send his curling effort over the bar.

It was a similar story after the restart as Arsenal preserved their supremacy as Albion’s meagre challenge slowly ebbed away as the home side stepped up their efforts for a third goal. Graham Dorrans had two early opportunities in the second half for Hodgson’s firing wide of Wojciech Szczesny’s right hand post before clipping an effort wide from the edge of the area minutes later. Thats as good as it got for West Brom as the hosts increased their stranglehold on the game with Aaron Ramsey, Gervinho and Vermaelen going close before Arteta made it 3-0. The Spaniard swept home Van Persie’s clever pass for his first goal at the Emirates since his summer move from Everton putting the finishing touches to a slick move. The win continues the Gunners renaissance and keeps them seventh in the table just three points shy of fourth placed Chelsea going into the international break.

Wenger wants Arsenal to forget Spurs rivalry

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that his side need to forget about their rivalry with Tottenham in the race for a top four finish, and focus on improving.

Spurs have had an impressive start to the campaign and a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday night lifted Harry Redknapp’s men up to third place in the Premier League standings.

The Gunners are three points behind their London rivals and have played a game more, and many are predicting that Tottenham may qualify for the Champions League this term at Arsenal’s expense.

Despite the local rivalry between the teams, the French coach wants his men to focus on themselves rather than others.

“I don’t believe we have to focus on Spurs, we have to focus on us improving,” he told The Daily Mail.

“It’s important we don’t get confused about what we want to achieve. What we want to do is improve and play better.

“People always make definite conclusions after one game. I saw Spurs’ game against Villa and they weren’t really challenged.

“There’s a long way to go. At the moment Spurs are fighting for the top four like we are. At the end we can both be in the top four and we will try everything possible to be in front of them. But that is not enough for me.

“With or without Tottenham, what we want is to be in the top four. That’s our target,” he concluded.

Arsenal can seal their place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League on Wednesday night, and need only a draw against Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium to qualify.

Wenger set to join Fergie in pursuit of £20m Spaniard

Arsenal have joined United, City and Barcelona in the quest to sign Valencia’s and newly capped Spain international Jordi Alba .

The ‘Sunday mirror’ reports that City have sent scouts to watch the promising defender in action and believe he will be a perfect addition to Mancini’s already multi-million pound squad. The former La Masia misfit was a product of Barcelona’s youth academy but was released by the Catalan giants in 2005 due to his stature. He is the player that got away and Barcelona will do everything in their power to bring the 22-year-old back home.

Manchester United have also expressed an interest in the young starlet and have deemed the Spanish left back as a potential long-term replacement for the ageing Patrice Evra.

He is one of Los Che’s brightest prospects and despite the club suffering financially; they will not want to lose their star player. If Alba is to leave then City’s financial power will certainly give them the edge over their supposed rivals.

Alba has been in a rich vein of form this season making him the latest talent to emerge from the Mestalla. He has grown in reputation for his surging runs and attacking mindset which has not only earned him a call to Spain’s national team, but has been considered as one of Europe’s most promising left-backs.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Jordi Alba could be on his way out of the Mestalla. With a £20 million buyout clause, teams could possibly view this as a great investment.

Swansea City v Tottenham Hotspur – Match Preview

Tottenham face a tricky trip to South Wales to face Swansea as they continue their attempts to close the gap at the top of the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers side will be keen to cause a huge upset when they welcome the title challengers to the Liberty Stadium on New Years Eve and ease their fears over being dragged towards the relegation zone. The Swans have enjoyed an impressive debut season in the top flight but a run of one win in seven has caused them to start looking over their shoulders. Their impressive home form has been the main reason why they’ve continued to keep their heads above water with Manchester United the only team to leave South Wales with three points. Rodgers will certainly be relying on two of his summer signings to deliver the goods against Spurs this time around. Goalkeeper Michael Vorm tasked with keeping the goals out whilst record signing Danny Graham will be expected to hit the net at the opposite end and put to bed any fears the Swans may have about battling relegation in 2012.

Tottenham, on the other hand, will be keen to secure victory as they continue their challenge for the Premier League trophy. Harry Redknapp’s side sit third in the table seven points behind both Manchester clubs at the top following a run of one defeat in their last 15 which has included 12 wins. Spurs have been in blistering form this season with Gareth Bale destroying teams single handily from the left with Luka Modric and summer signing Scott Parker have tightened up the centre of midfield. Up front Emmanuel Adebayor has added a physical presence that has been lacking in Redknapp’s side whilst Brad Friedel has solved their long running goalkeeping problem. All the ingredients are there at White Hart Lane for a real shot at the title and they’ll be confident of securing victory over Swansea.

Swansea City 14th : 19 points

Team news: Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor could return after injury to boost the defence although the former might only be fit enough for a place on the bench

Key Player: Michael Vorm

The Dutch keeper has been a revelation this season and could be in for a busy afternoon against Tottenham. Vorm has kept seven clean sheets in his debut season in England and he’ll need to be at his best to keep out free scoring Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur 3rd : 38points

Team news: Roman Pavlyuchenko, Sebastien Bassong and Jermaine Defoe are all doubts whilst Ledley King is definitely out

Key Player: Gareth Bale

Many thought the Welsh winger would struggle to replicate his performances from last season but, unsurprisingly, he has raised them considerably. Bale’s second goal at Norwich on Tuesday incorporated everything that is good about his game and he’ll be key to

Swansea have a fantastic home record but that might not be enough to half Tottenham in their tracks. Harry Redknapp’s side are in full flow at the moment as they chase down the two Manchester clubs at the business end of the Premier League table.

Everton tie up Jelavic deal

Everton have announced the signing of Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic from Glasgow Rangers, who moves to Merseyside for a fee of £6 million.

The Croatia international has impressed since moving to Ibrox from Rapid Vienna back in the summer of 2010, and netted 36 times in 55 appearances for Ally McCoist’s men.

Jelavic sees the move to the Premier League as a big step in his career and he is confident he can score goals at this level:

“It is a big thing for me and it is a new step in my career, a step forward. I am very pleased and very excited, it is a new challenge for me.

“The Scottish Premier League is not as high a level as here in England but I think it will help a lot as it is not so much a big difference.

“I think I can bring some good football and to score many goals and to try to win some trophies.” (Sky Sports)

Jelavic has signed a four-and-a-half year contract with The Toffees and will look to make his debut for his new club against Wigan on Saturday.

Adebayor and Van der Vaart set to return for the North London derby

Tottenham have been given a boost ahead of Sunday’s north London derby against Arsenal, as Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed that he is on track to feature for Harry Redknapp’s men.

The Togolese marksman has been on the sidelines with a knee injury, but has revealed that he returned to training on Tuesday and felt no ill effects after participation.

“Just finished training, really happy with the progress, knee is looking much better. Working on my fitness for Sunday,” the African striker commented on his Twitter account.

The news will be of relief to Spurs fans, as Rafael van der Vaart is also rated as 50-50 for the clash with Arsenal Wenger’s men.

The Netherlands international has been unavailable for Spurs’ last three fixtures due to a calf strain, but again the player has admitted that a Sunday return is the goal.

“I’m recovering well from my injury,” Van der Vaart told his official website.

“I expect to be joining the team training on Wednesday after which I will start to focus on the match against Arsenal. I’ll be happy to play Arsenal. I can’t wait,” he concluded.

The game is crucial for both sides in the battle for a top four finish, as Spurs look to complete the double over their archrivals this season at the Emirates Stadium.

Hope for Liverpool, even if the spending dries up

Any Liverpool fans expecting a repeat of last January’s lavish spending found themselves sorely disappointed, as the transfer window slammed shut just over a week ago.

The Reds parted with around £1 million for Welsh youngster Danny Ward and Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Carlos Teixeira, who has drawn comparisons with ex-Barcelona and Chelsea playmaker Deco. This is a stark comparison to the fees in excess of £50 million paid for Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll a year ago.

Perhaps this drastic change is a sign of things to come for the Merseysiders, who now have the opportunity to lower their spending and instead turn to a wealth of talented youngsters looking to break into Kenny Dalglish’s first team set-up.

The impacts of players such as Martin Kelly and Jay Spearing, who have notched up a combined 79 senior appearances, as well as the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Robinson and Jon Flanagan show the extent of the talent Liverpool have at their future disposal.

With UEFA’s new financial Fair Play rules expected to come into action in the not too distant future and the struggling world economy, which looks to have finally caught up with the almost parallel world of top flight football, it could be the right time for Liverpool to put their faith in youth.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Anybody who has been following the Reds over the course of the last few years would have noticed an influx of young players for sizable fees, hinting at a real investment in talent for the future of the first-team. This work was set in place upon Dalglish’s return, in an ambassadorial role, during 2009, where the Scot worked closely with the Academy to secure the most talented youngsters available, after the departure of Steve Heighway.

Since then the Reds have beaten many of Europe’s elite clubs to the signings of players such as Raheem Sterling, Toni Silva and Danny Wilson, all of whom have been earning rave reviews for their performances in Liverpool’s Youth and Reserve teams.

Arguably the most exciting player currently looking to break through to the first team set-up is Jesus Fernandez Saez or ‘Suso’ as he is better known. Signed from Cadiz at the tender age of 15, the tricky little Spaniard is generating real excitement in the corridors of Melwood, and is even being spoken about in the same breath as Steven Gerrard, in terms of his long term potential. Suso rejected overtures from his boyhood club Real Madrid as well as Barcelona to move to the North-West of England, and is believed to be a player who is being watched closely by King Kenny, with a view to a place in the first team squad in the not too distant future.

Suso is by no means the only player to have the talent necessary to be a future Anfield hero as the academy bulges with players waiting for their opportunity. Should Liverpool’s big spending dry up, there shouldn’t be any cause for concern; the future looks very bright indeed.

Top TEN ‘Boy Wonders’ set to make their mark on the Premier League

If you delve deep inside your Premier League club’s match day programme, you are more than likely to find an entire section devoted to the youth departments of your team structure. With the inevitable fate of specific young players outshining others and making a meteoric rise to first team contention within the same year as signing a first professional contract perhaps, there have been a few examples of fledgling rookies making their senior bows this term.

Liverpool fans won’t like to be reminded of this weekend’s shock home defeat to Wigan Athletic, which has highlighted for the umpteenth time, the shortcomings of Kenny Dalglish’s side in their slim Champions League ambitions. Nevertheless, what may have slipped under the radar amidst the drama and tension was the 84th-minute blooding of young Raheem Sterling who made his debut in front of the Kop after being prized away from the clutches of QPR as an even younger precocious talent in 2010.

There is a lot expected of the Jamaican born England Under-17 international and Reds fans were wondering just when Sterling would make an appearance in the first team after so much hype. It may not be certain just when Sterling and the following nine players much like him will make another Premier League appearance but their fledgling bows serve to suggest there is a great deal of excitement and anticipation surrounding their long-term futures. Let us take a look.
