Villa interested in Giorgian De Arrascaeta

Aston Villa could land a dream upgrade on Anwar El Ghazi in Flamengo star Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

What’s the story?

With the Premier League season now over, Dean Smith’s side can now concentrate on the upcoming summer transfer window and how best to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

According to Uruguayan outlet Traspasos (via Sport Witness), Villa have made an enquiry about signing De Arrascaeta this summer, although it was revealed that so far there has only been initial contact and nothing more.

Better than El Ghazi

With 74 goals in his career thus far, De Arrascaeta has offered a consistent goal threat despite playing as a left-sided winger, although he can also play off the striker.

The 26-year-old has been in fine form for Flamengo since joining the club, with a user on Twitter putting a spotlight on the enormous success he has enjoyed out in Brazil by revealing: “Giorgian De Arrascaeta has won the Campeonato Carioca for the third season in a row, as Flamengo beat Fluminense in the state championship final last night. The Uruguay international has now won 9 trophies in 29 months at the club. That’s basically a trophy every 97 days.”

Writing for World Football Index, Tom Robinson described the 26-year-old as someone “blessed with excellent technique and vision”, and at Flamengo he has “quickly became a fan favourite with his mix of skill, invention and goal threat from midfield”.

In the Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League, the Uruguayan has been in scintillating form, scoring two goals and providing four assists, one of which came last Thursday.

If you compare his performances in that competition compared to what El Ghazi has produced in the Premier League, then it really is night and day.

As per Sofascore, the Uruguayan doubles the amount of key passes, has far more touches of the ball, makes more crosses, and is also more of a defensive presence too, winning more interceptions, tackles and duels per game in comparison to the Aston Villa man.

De Arrascaeta is proving that he is a player for the big occasion by shining in the Copa Libertadores, and his goal threat, creativity and hard work off the ball makes him a perfect upgrade on El Ghazi.

Hodge, Arnberger drive Bulls to distraction

Victorian batsmen Brad Hodge (103*) and Jason Arnberger (100) have crafted a superb 190-run partnership to lead their team into a strong position by the end of day one of the Pura Cup clash against Queensland here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground

John Polack29-Nov-2000Victorian batsmen Brad Hodge (103*) and Jason Arnberger (100) have crafted a superb 190-run partnership to lead their team into a strong position by the end of day one of the Pura Cup clash against Queensland here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The pair’s twin centuries powered the Bushrangers to a total of 3/237 on a day when the Bulls were noticeably hampered by the absence of several of their leading bowlers.Continuing a phenomenal start to the season, it was Hodge who played the defining innings of the day. All-rounder Leigh Carseldine (0/37) beat him once in late afternoon as he pulled over the top of a short ball lazily, but it was one of the few deliveries that discomforted him. Many innings have passed since he burst on to the Australian first-class scene as an eighteen year old with 991 runs at an average in excess of fifty in 1993-94. But rarely, if ever, has he looked as commanding as he has in recent weeks. Again today, he was solid in defence and severe in his punishment whenever the bowlers erred in length. His driving was faultless. All the while, he swelled his first-class aggregate for the season to 597 runs. It is a measure of his current productivity that, in just his fifth match, he has already easily surpassed the tally of 423 runs he accumulated in the space of eleven matches last summer. He is also now within a whisker of emulating Darren Lehmann’s effort – recorded at an equivalent stage last summer – of reaching three figures five times in successive first-class matches.”This is probably the best I’ve ever put together,” said Hodge of his incredible run.”I guess the only equivalent would be my first year. Obviously that was a good year. But now I know my game a little bit more, know my limitations and know my strengths, and I’ve toned my game to suit that.””I thought my defence was lacking a little bit; for years, I’ve always had a number of good shots but I thought I lacked the ability to defend and stay out for there for long periods of time,” he explained of the contrast between the start to this year and seasons past.As impressive today as his sheer strokeplay alone – which was attractive enough in itself – was his ability to steady a dawdling Victorian ship through a slow early passage and then to effortlessly accelerate the pace of the innings. Although the sluggish pace of the outfield made the score appear more inadequate than it might otherwise have been, the Bushrangers had managed to accumulate a mere fifty-two runs during the pre-lunch session in a risk-averse performance that threatened to undermine skipper Paul Reiffel’s success at the toss. Utilising strokeplay which points to a new level of confidence and self-belief, Hodge encountered few difficulties in sparking the turnaround. It needs to be said that the meaty Arnberger lost little by comparison, though. After a patient start around the dismissals of Shawn Craig (8) and Matthew Mott (7), he followed Hodge’s lead to produce some sparkling strokeplay throughout the afternoon. Forceful driving through the arc between mid off and mid on punctuated his fourth first-class century, but there were very few parts of the ground to which he failed to play shots. His departure fifteen minutes before stumps – as he unleashed a loose cover drive at Adam Dale (2/30) – wasn’t quite the finish that his hand demanded. For the Queenslanders, it was a most unsatisfying day. Deprived of the services of Andy Bichel, Michael Kasprowicz, Scott Muller and Ashley Noffke to a mixture of international commitments and injury problems, they struggled to confer to their attack a penetrative edge. Typically, Dale bowled accurately and was a model of containment. On their first-class debuts, medium pacer Carseldine and off spinner Scott O’Leary (1/39) weren’t the worst either. But there was little to encourage them in the straw-coloured pitch nor many obvious ways past the bats of Arnberger and Hodge. And where the thunderstorm-laden activity of late yesterday and early this morning might normally have been expected to encourage significant swing and seam movement, there was only spasmodic evidence of it to be found today.

Odubeko can be West Ham’s next Defoe

It is no secret that West Ham are searching for frontline additions this summer, and boy, do they need them.

The Irons failed to replace Sebastian Haller during the January transfer window, leaving manager David Moyes in the precarious spot of having only one senior forward option – an injury-prone Michail Antonio.

A player who has never played more than 63% of games in a Premier League season since joining the club.

Several names have been mooted as targets in recent months, with Chelsea outcast Tammy Abraham and Czech wonderkid Adam Hlozek seemingly among the top candidates, as per The Athletic.

West Ham’s need for another striker is only going to ramp up after the side sensationally qualified for the Europa League, nearly a year on from avoiding relegation with one game to spare.

Truth be told, Antonio plus one new addition may not be enough to make the Hammers as competitive as they should be next season. Two games a week will quickly become the norm and rotation will be key for Moyes to keep building on his success at the London Stadium.

The Scot could alleviate such worries by dipping his toes into their promising academy set-up and there’s one striker who looks primed for an increased role next season.

Back in February, Moyes hinted towards the 18-year-old getting an opportunity.

“He’s been training with the first team but his biggest problem is he just got back from injury and he had to isolate,” the 58-year-old said, before later adding: “He scored a couple of goals (against Southampton Under-23s). I watched the game and I’ve been pleased with him. If the opportunities came along where I felt there was a chance to introduce him in some way, I wouldn’t be against doing so.”

It’s been a long, long time since an attacker was promoted from Chadwell Heath to Rush Green, and then subsequently gone onto forge a successful career in East London.

Perhaps in Odubeko, Moyes can finally find a player to follow the path of Jermain Defoe. He certainly has a similar eye for goal as the former England international.

Last season, the teenage prodigy found the net ten times in just eight appearances and has continued that fine form with 14 goals in 12 matches, as per Transfermarkt.

Moyes handed him his debut in the FA Cup this season, featuring from the bench against Stockport County before playing an hour in the defeat to Manchester United.

When clinching his signature, academy chief Ricky Martin waxed lyrical about Odubeko and his qualities.

“He is a promising player we are looking forward to working with and this move is a great opportunity for him to join us and continue his journey,” he said before adding: “It will naturally take Mipo some time to settle in, but we believe West Ham is the perfect environment for Mipo to flourish and fulfil his undoubted potential.”

Similarly, his former coach Bernard Byrne dubbed him a “special talent” in an interview with The Athletic.

That’s a lot of hype to live up to but if he can, then West Ham may well stumble upon their next Defoe.

Northerns hit back to level semi-final series

Only two days previously, Jacques Rudolph struck a magnificent century and still saw his side Northerns beaten by another plucky display from Border as they took the most dramatic of 1-0 leads in this best-of-three semi-final of South Africa’s

Andy Colquhoun – MWP10-Feb-2001Only two days previously, Jacques Rudolph struck a magnificent century and still saw his side Northerns beaten by another plucky display from Border as they took the most dramatic of 1-0 leads in this best-of-three semi-final of South Africa’s domestic one-day competition. On Friday night he fell eleven runs short of three figures, but thistime enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing his side produce a sterlingperformance to level the series. It was a magnificent effort from the visitors, who had always looked the underdogs after Border had posted what seemed like an impregnable 271 for eight off 45 overs when they won the toss and decided to bat.Chasing such a challenging target, a good start was always vitaland that was duly provided by Rudolph’s young team-mate, Johan Myburgh. He set the tone for the Northerns’ run chase as he struck 44 runs at thetop of the order in double-quick time. When his was the first wicket tofall, Northerns had already cruised to 50 without loss and the gauntlet hadbeen well and truly thrown down. With solid support from Martin van Jaarsveld (76), Rudolph then sawrelative old hands Neil McKenzie and captain Gerald Dros finish the game offwith 16 balls to spare.Earlier, left-arm seamer Greg Smith must have thought his hat-trick ofthe final three balls of the Border innings was nothing more than a welcomebonus. Although he ran through Ian Mitchell (6), Vasbert Drakes (0) and thensaw van Jaarsveld juggle the hat-trick catch tantalisingly before holdingon, the Border effort in front of their own fans looked sufficiently imposingto earn them a place in the final.Seventies from Craig Sugden, Steven Pope and Mark Boucher were thehighlight of what looked like a ruthless Border batting display on a wicketthat has always given runs away grudgingly. As it is, the sides will meetagain on Sunday with a place in the final on the line.

Romano makes Spurs claim involving Conte

Writing on Twitter, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update involving Antonio Conte after Tottenham’s talks with the Italian manager broke down on Friday evening.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager hunt…

Many names have come in and out of the fray since chairman Daniel Levy opted to sack former boss Jose Mourinho. The likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers were once touted as favourites, but the club has since turned to other targets following repeated blows.

More recently, former Spurs favourite Mauricio Pochettino entered contention after The Athletic broke news of his talks for the job, but Paris-Saint Germain will not let him go easily.

This prompted Tottenham to turn to Conte, but differences over backroom staff, the management of young players and overall ambition saw talks eventually collapse (The Telegraph).

The Latest: Romano makes Conte claim…

After the fallout of those failed discussions with Conte, Romano has shared an update on the 51-year-old and his stance on potentially returning to the table.

Dropping a claim on Twitter, the journalist said that the Premier League title-winning boss hasn’t changed his mind about the Spurs job and not even Fabio Paratici’s imminent appointment as sporting director will convince him otherwise.

“Antonio Conte has not changed his mind about Tottenham in the last 24 hours after Spurs were trying to find a solution to appoint him also yesterday afternoon,” Romano explained on Twitter.

“Not even Fabio Paratici’s imminent agreement to become new Tottenham director of football convinced Conte.”

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs fans…

Some Spurs fans may have liked to see a manager of Conte’s trophy-winning pedigree come through the door at N17. Taking that into account, it’s safe to say this update comes as a blow for those who felt that way.

Spurs legend Graham Roberts recently branded Conte an ‘exceptional coach’ and his numbers definitely back that statement. Over his managerial career, the former Chelsea gaffer has won eight major trophies whilst averaging a hugely impressive 2.01 points per match and more than 300 victories (Transfermarkt).

Time is running out for Levy to appoint a credible candidate and the options are growing thin.

In other news: Alasdair Gold has now shared ‘good news’ coming out of Tottenham, find out more here.
