Kennedy not surprised if there’s problems in Newcastle’s takeover

Just as things were appearing to rumble on in the background quietly in Mike Ashley’s legal battle against the Premier League, he released another statement on behalf of the club, and Liam Kennedy, journalist at the Shields Gazette, would not be surprised to see more problems arise.

The open letter that Newcastle released on Thursday evening was received with mixed reactions as many agreed with Ashley in saying that if the Premier League have nothing to hide then the court case should be played out in public, but others called it hypocritical considering the owner has done two interviews in 14 years.

Newcastle fans have had to put up with plenty of obstacles, hurdles and red flags over the last year and this is just yet another way of making things drag on even further for fans who are likely sick of all the talk now.

Ashley has confirmed through his sources that he’s confident of getting the takeover passed through and beating the Premier League in court, but when asked if there could be more problems around the corner, Kennedy had this to say to Football FanCast:

“Could there be another spanner thrown in the works from the Premier League side? That wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.”

From the statement that Newcastle released on Thursday evening, it appeared that it could be a final throw of the dice to try and get the Premier League to cave in before arbitration begins later this month.

That would appear to be a sign of weakness from Ashley’s party and that they may not be as confident as first thought that they can win the respective legal battles.

North ton sees CBCA XI continue their winning run

The visiting Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy team from Australia continued their winning run in Chennai when they beat the Combined XI by six wickets on the final day of the three-day match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.

Santhosh S10-Apr-2002The visiting Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy team from Australia continued their winning run in Chennai when they beat the Combined XI by six wickets on the final day of the three-day match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.Sending a team of promising young players for a couple of weeks to Chennai to allow the youngsters to learn more about the playing conditions in the sub-continent has become a regular feature of the Australian cricket calendar. One player who made most of the experience this time around was Marcus North, who scored a masterly hundred that paved the way for a convincing win for the visitors. On Monday, the visiting captain Andrew Symonds won the toss and asked the Combined XI to bat first. The visitors were off to a great start, Ashley Noffke cleaning up the opening batsman Padmanabhan Satish for a duck. Then it was the turn of the right-arm wrist-spinner Cameron White, whose play closely resembles that of the leg spin wizard Shane Warne, to take over.White’s mannerisms, the walk up to the crease, and the action all rekindle memories of the the great man himself. This young Victorian, who led Australia to success in the Under-19 World Cup in 2002, was easily the best bowler with the figures of 19-6-58-4. The Combined XI were bowled out for 207 in the first innings, left-arm wrist-spinner Beau Casson picking up 2/11 and left-arm orthodox spinner Xavier Doherty finishing with 3/23.The visitors resumed on the second morning at 130/4 with the left-hand batsman from Western Australia, North, on 56 not out. The young batsman had to deal with the searing conditions in Chennai at this time of the year – too hot and humid for any comfort – and also the turning ball on a pitch that was playing up. It was a brave effort by North as he compiled 152 glorious runs, with the help of 21 boundaries and two sixes, from just 202 balls. There were useful contributions from White (41 off 38 balls) and Casson (45 off 59 balls) as the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy were bowled out in their first innings for 330 runs. Off-break bowler D Dhandapani was the most successful member of the attack with 4/65.The Combined XI in their second innings found themselves at a score of 100/6 with Ashley Noffke and Robert Cassell picking up two wickets apiece. A crucial 101-run seventh wicket partnership between Kuthethurshri Vasudevadas (105) and Sreekumar Nair (38) helped the Combined XI out of the woods. Both the left-handers made batting look very easy, with the young Vasudevadas going on to reach his century. Thiru Kumaran then blasted a quick-fire 27, but the Combined XI second innings was wrapped up in a hurry as Craig Simmons picked up the last three wickets.Set a modest 163 for a win, the visitors got off to a good start when Jarrad Burke and Simmons applied themselves well in the scorching heat to put on 109 runs for the first wicket. Both the left-handed opening batsmen smacked a six each over the long-on fence. Burke made 44 off 53 balls before being smartly stumped off the bowling of Nair. Simmons made 69 off 74 balls, striking the ball cleanly for eleven fours and a six, before falling to the wiles of Golwalkar, completely mistiming the sweep shot.Ryan Harris and George Bailey missed out, scoring a run each. It was then left to the visiting skipper Symonds to unleash some hefty blows to take them past the target. Symonds finished on 31 not out off 35 balls, cracking five fours and swiping a mighty six over square leg. Casson remained unbeaten on seven. The visitors had earlier won the first encounter, a 50-over match against the same opponents, by three wickets at the Guru Nanak College Grounds on Saturday. The two teams meet again in a limited-overs match on Friday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Rangers fans rage at Porto’s Morelos bid

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were livid after it was revealed that Porto have made a €12m (£10.3m) bid for Alfredo Morelos, with the offer also including a 20% sell-on clause.

The Colombia international has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer, with him even said to have agreed personal terms with the Portuguese outfit (Antena 1). The 25-year-old has been a hugely important player for the 55-time Scottish champions since joining in 2017, scoring 94 times in 182 matches (Transfermarkt), but the Gers will know that he will depart at some point.

Whenever he does, they will be looking to get the best possible fee for him. As per Ekrem Konur, Porto believe that sum to be €12m (£10.3m), something which has irked many Gers supporters.

The news was shared on Twitter by Konur, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Ibrox faithful. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the update.

Sri Lanka 'A' gain upper hand at Moratuwa

India ‘A’ bowlers justified their captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s decision to bowl first in the second ‘Test’ against Sri Lanka A at the De Zoysa Stadium, Moratuwa on Thursday

Staff Reporter23-May-2002India ‘A’ bowlers justified their captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s decision to bowl first in the second ‘Test’ against Sri Lanka A at the De Zoysa Stadium, Moratuwa on Thursday. But, by the end of the second day, the visiting side’s top-order had let the team down somewhat, ending on 55 for four. The first day of the match being washed out, the second day saw Sri Lanka ‘A’, powered by hard-hitting opener Avishka Gunawardene, make a strong start. Quiet easily the dominant partner, Gunawardene ensured that his team put up 53 runs before fellow-opener Geral Daniel (12) became the first wicket to fall on the day.Sri Lanka ‘A’ number three Mohamed Nawaz, who replaced Daniel, continued his good batting form. Fresh from an unbeaten 80-odd in the second innings of the first ‘Test’ between the two sides, Nawaz started to middle the ball with heartening confidence. Even the dismissals of Gunawardene (51 off 69 balls) and captain Tillakaratne Dilshan (7, in the space of 17 runs failed to ruffle him. With number five Chamara Silva proving an able ally, Nawaz began to stitch together a partnership that regained the intiative for the home team. The duo put on 121 runs before Nawaz (87) offered a return catch to Rohan Gavaskar. Nawaz’s innings had lasted 148 balls and contained 12 fours and one six.Once he departed, the Sri Lankan innings fell apart. Next man Muthumudalige Pushpakumara was out soon after, for just five. Soon, Silva too followed after a measured 65 off 103 balls. The remainder of the tail proved to be fairly brittle. Only KS Lokuarachchi provided any semblance of a resistance scoring 29 off 45 balls before falling to L Balaji. Balaji ended with four wickets for 47, the most successful of the seven bowlers used.India ‘A’ lost their first wicket, that of the in-form Gautam Gambhir, with just 19 on the board. Dulip Liyanage, who scalped Gambhir, snapped up two more in quick succession, removing Sridharan Sriram and Kanitkar. Pulasthi Gunaratne too got into the act, getting rid of Gavaskar. At the close of play, Akash Chopra at the top of the order was unbeaten on 37 off 62 balls. He was accompanied by Jai P Yadav, who had made six. India ‘A’ were precariously perched at 55 for four, and it will take some good batting from this pair, and the batsmen to follow, to ensure that the visitors do not lose this match.

Frustration for Cidermen as rain prevents any play at The Oval

Somerset suffered a frustrating day at The Oval as the third day of their championship match against table toppers Surrey was abandoned without a ball being bowled

Richard Walsh26-May-2002Somerset suffered a frustrating day at The Oval as the third day of their championship match against table toppers Surrey was abandoned without a ball being bowled. After several attempts to get things started the day’s play was eventually called off by umpires Graham Burgess and John Holder in the mid afternoon, to leave the Cidermen kicking their heels with disappointment.Following yesterday’s very positive performance and the late breakthrough by Ian Blackwell to remove Graham Thorpe, Somerset were hoping to get early wickets this morning and set themselves a target to chase. As it was they will just have to wait until tomorrow and hope that the weather will be kinder to them in their attempts to get the result they feel that they have earned from this match.

Nuno gifted big Kane boost in Tottenham claim

According to a report by the Daily Mail, new Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo has just been handed a big Harry Kane boost ahead of his first full season in charge of the Lilywhites.

The Lowdown: Kane looking for exit…

Tottenham’s star striker has been heavily linked with a move away from north London this summer ever since Sky Sports broke the news that he wishes to move on.

Of all the interested parties, Premier League champions Manchester City have made the first move for him, tabling a £100 million bid.

That offer has since been rejected despite Kane’s wish to exit N17, with chairman Daniel Levy taking a hard line stance when it comes to his superstar asset.

The Latest: Nuno gifted Kane boost…

As per the Mail, Spurs boss Nuno has just been handed a big boost in potentially guiding Tottenham to a successful 2021/2022 campaign, and it involves Kane.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-3/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The outlet believes that Tottenham and Levy have now personally assured Nuno that his best player isn’t going anywhere this summer and to start planning for life with him in the team.

This development highlights Spurs will continue to resist offers for the 27-year-old with Levy apparently making the club’s intentions clear behind the scenes.

The Verdict: Good news for Nuno…

The 47-year-old has a mountainous task on his hands after putting to pen to paper on a two-year Tottenham deal, and that is to restore faith and pride in the club.

Jose Mourinho’s tenure has left a sour taste in the mouth of supporters and Spurs’ hapless search for a new manager, which lasted for over two months, certainly hasn’t helped matters.

Nuno needs all the help he can get with this massive challenge at Tottenham and potentially keeping Kane, who Alan Shearer recently dubbed ‘magnificent’, will boost the Portuguese’ chances of making it a success.
