Eight months before former Everton midfielder Leon Osman was given his first England call-up at the age of 31 in November 2012, he was handed one of the most glowing reviews of his entire career.

An underappreciated but consistent character for the Toffees, the diminutive maestro was compared to one of the greatest players we’ve ever seen in his position.

After Everton had faced Tottenham, Jack Wilshere took to social media to say: “Osman is a player by the way… plays a bit like Iniesta!”

That might have been pushing things a bit much but it was clear to see why.

His touch was impressive and he weaved past players with minimal effort. Osman kept things simple and was never afraid to do the dirty work either.

Colin Harvey, his youth-team coach in Merseyside, once said: “He has not got great pace but has can turn and work the ball and go past people without pace. He has good trickery and feet movement.”

They’ve had plenty of midfielders since his retirement and they are currently well-stocked in that area.

Rafa Benitez has the likes of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Tom Davies, Andre Gomes and the returning Jean-Philippe Gbamin at his disposal.

However, they could sign a similar player to Osman in the shape of Rangers gem, Glen Kamara.

He was linked with a move to Goodison Park last month after starring for Finland at the European Championships. Though, in order to sign him, they will have to fend off competition from other Premier League clubs, including West Ham.

An appraisal from Neil McCann, his manager at Dundee United, demonstrates how much he compares to Osman: “He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect.

McCann concluded: “He’s a special talent. He’s lightning-quick but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

Osman wasn’t the quickest player out there but his little burst of pace, much like Kamara’s, is an incredibly useful asset to have.

The way the pair gather the ball and move on possession is also alike.

The 34-cap Kamara completed 87.9% of his passes for Finland at the Euros while Osman’s final years in the game saw him regularly achieve a completion rate of around 85%.

Their tackle rate is also very similar. The current Toffees target produced 1.3 successful challenges per game for his country this summer while their former midfielder managed 1.6 on average in the final stages of his playing days.

Bearing all of that in mind, the Finnish dynamo would surely be a very good piece of business from Benitez and co.

Com o resultado, o Grêmio chegou à segunda colocação na tabela do Gaúcho, com 17 pontos, e garantiu matematicamente sua classificação às quartas de final do Estadual. O Juventude, por sua vez, manteve-se na sétima posição, com 11 pontos somados, e decide a classificação somente na próxima rodada.

Connor Goldson is reportedly close to signing a new three-year contract at Rangers, which will undoubtedly be a huge boost for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Record, the 28-year-old defender is set to sign a new deal with Rangers, with an announcement expected in the coming days following a breakthrough in talks.

It is suggested that the former Brighton man is targeting title domination with Gerrard’s side after playing a key role in their unbeaten title win last season and is therefore keen to extend his stay, despite the likes of West Ham being credited with an interest in signing him this summer.

A huge boost for Gerrard?

Since signing for Rangers in 2018, Goldson has gone on to establish himself as a key player at Ibrox, making 162 appearances and contributing an impressive 16 goals and five assists.

Last season saw him appear in all 38 of Rangers’ league matches, as they conceded just 13 goals in total, which emphasises just how important he is to Gerrard, who will surely be delighted to keep him at the club ahead of the upcoming title defence and Champions League return.

The 41-year-old manager is clearly a huge fan of the centre-back, as he sang his praises last season, saying:

“I think Connor Goldson has been outstanding this season, showing incredible leadership alongside James on and off the pitch.

“His passing has been next level and he has been working hard on it. He has put the work in and we are proud of the level he is playing at.”

A previous report from The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell had suggested that Rangers were willing to lose Goldson for nothing next summer when his current contract expires if it meant keeping him for the 2021/22 campaign, but it seems as if they will not be forced into that situation following this latest update, which will surely delight Rangers fans.

A three-year extension will see Goldson extend his stay at Ibrox until 2025, by which time he will be 32, so it would not be a surprise to see him finish his career with the Gers, by which time, he will hopefully have added to his trophy collection.
