Brown ousted as Zimbabwe coach

Although official confirmation had proved hard to come by, Cricinfo has learned that Robin Brown has been fired from his position as national coach by Zimbabwe Cricket

Steven Price in Harare07-Aug-2008Although official confirmation had proved hard to come by, Cricinfo has learned that Robin Brown has been fired from his position as national coach by Zimbabwe Cricket. Brown’s contract expires at the end of August and sources say he has been told that it won’t be extended beyond that.Andy Pycroft, the Zimbabwe A coach, has also been dismissed in a controversial shake-up which could leave Zimbabwe Cricket struggling to fill the voids. It appears that the strong influence of the Takashinga, a club with strong links to both the Zimbabwe board and the ruling Zanu-PF regime, has played a major part in the decision. The faction never got along with Brown on a personality level, it its feared his sacking owed more to that than outright cricketing reasons. It is rumoured that Steven Mangongo, a leading Takashinga official with few cricketing credentials, has been appointed as an interim replacement for Brown. The group accused Brown of favouring certain white players, an accusation which has been refuted by some national team players. The Zimbabwe cricket team is dominantly black and the few white players who have remained are actually key players.”Axes were always being sharpened for Brown barely days into the job,” said an insider. “This is one of the indistinct circumstances a coach has been fired. There is a certain power-hungry group which controls Zimbabwe Cricket from outside the top brass. Unfortunately we have a meek administration so they are easily controlled by them.”Brown was unavailable for comment nor was anyone from the board. One former player said that Brown’s departure raised issues over who would succeed him. “All the home-grown candidates have either been tried or turned their backs,” he said. “Nobody with any credibility from overseas would touch the job, so you wonder who on earth they will turn to.”

Sheth drops West Ham claim involving Milenkovic

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), journalist Dharmesh Sheth has made a West Ham United claim involving manager David Moyes and transfer target Nikola Milenkovic.

The Lowdown: West Ham and Milenkovic saga…

The Hammers have been in talks to sign Milenkovic for nearly a fortnight following the club’s decision to prioritise the signing of a new centre-half before August 31.

Indeed, despite their alarming lack of depth going forward, West Ham and manager Moyes are keen to reinforce their central defensive options.

Both Kurt Zouma and Milenkovic have been the main targets, with claims even emerging last week that the latter man had his bags packed and a London Stadium move was imminent (Tuttosport).

However, as the talks die down, Sky journalist Sheth has shed some light on the situation.

The Latest: Sky reporter drops Milenkovic and Moyes claim…

Speaking live on air (via FD), Sheth has made a West Ham claim involving Moyes and Milenkovic as he explains why the Serbian powerhouse has not become a Hammers player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-3/” title=”West Ham latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“West Ham were also in for Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, that looked very close, and we all thought that Milenkovic would be coming to the London Stadium,” he said to Sky.

“But, I’m told that David Moyes decided that he wasn’t 100 per cent convinced that he was the right man for his squad.

“Because at the end of the day, the way it works at West Ham, yes David Sullivan will do the finances but David Moyes will make the final decision on whether a player comes in or not.”

The Verdict: Frustrating update…

Moyes recently spoke of the importance to carefully hand pick players he is certain will improve West Ham’s squad (football.london), but with the August 31 deadline fast approaching, they cannot afford to dilly-dally much longer.

Ahead of a long season as they also compete in the Europa League group stages, the Scotsman will have just Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna to choose from as senior centre-back options in this moment.

Not to mention they are severely lacking alternative forward options to Michail Antonio, who spent a lot of 2020/2021 on the treatment table.

It really is now make or break for West Ham with new additions arguably a necessity, and they seem to have missed out on Milenkovic who has been described as ‘affordable’ by Italian football experts (Conor Clancy, speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern).

Greg Chappell has agreed to join the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane as the head coach

Greg Chappell’s coaching career has followed a familiar path to his playing days after he agreed to join the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane as the head coach. Chappell, who switched states from South Australia to Queensland more than three decades ago, will fill the post that has remained vacant since Tim Nielsen joined the national set-up last year.Brian McFadyen, the former Tasmania coach, was in charge for 18 months in an interim role, but Cricket Australia delayed making a full-time appointment because it wanted someone with significant international experience. Chappell was mentioned in the initial search, but Cricket Australia originally hoped the New Zealander John Wright would take the position, and then the other preferred candidates, Dav Whatmore and Trevor Bayliss, gained international appointments. Eventually the journey returned to Chappell who, like Wright, has worked with India.”I am looking forward to the challenge this position will offer in what is an exciting time, not just for Australian cricket but world cricket as a whole,” Chappell, who has a three-year deal, said. “Working with other coaches in the Australian cricketing system and deciding how to make the best possible use of the wonderful facilities we have available to us is something that excites me greatly.”I believe I have a lot to offer the younger players, especially in the mental area of the game from both a personal and coaching point of view, and have a lot of knowledge when it comes to individual and team preparations for cricketing tours.” He will be in charge of all the Centre of Excellence programmes and will also be a consultant to the Australian team, and the Australia A coach.Chappell said the current situation in Australia was reminiscent of the mid-1980s. “Australian cricket is again going through a period of rebuilding after what has been a very successful era,” he said. “We need to ensure we continue this momentum and prepare the right kind of players who can continue our excellent performances of the past.”Chappell to continue work in Rajasthan Chappell will continue to be the head coach of the Rajasthan Cricket Academy (RCA), a post to which he was appointed a year back. “He will be spending time both at the RCA and at the Centre of Excellence. This will only help the RCA in getting the best techniques and follow through with the training of our boys,” Lalit Modi, the president of the Rajasthan board, told Cricinfo.A former director of cricket at South Australia, Chappell landed the India job in 2005 but left two years later when the team was knocked out in the first round of the World Cup. In South Australia, where Chappell played from 1966 to 1973, he was unable to lift the Redbacks to any trophy success in five years in charge and his most memorable decision with India was to drop the then captain Sourav Ganguly.Chappell’s latest appointment was with the Rajasthan Cricket Association’s Centre of Excellence, but he is expected to start at the Australian Academy before the end of the year. He will use his varied experience to develop the country’s emerging and established young talent at the Centre of Excellence, which is based at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field. A member of Australian Cricket’s Hall of Fame, Chappell, the most graceful of batsmen, played 87 Tests, scoring 7110 runs at an average of 53.86, and captained the team in 48 matches.

Fulham interested in Phil Jones

Fulham are interested in a deal to bring Phil Jones to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that Marco Silva’s side are one of a number of Championship clubs interested in the Manchester United centre-back, who is also believed to be wanted by Premier League outfits Newcastle United and Watford.

The report goes on to claim that the most likely scenario would be a loan move, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side willing to pay a significant chunk of the 29-year-old’s £110k-per-week wages to help get a deal over the line.

Big mistake

While it is undeniable that Jones was once a player who boasted an incredible amount of potential, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming back in 2013 that the defender could go on to become United’s “best ever player,” this is something that, in reality, is far from the case.

Indeed, the £4.5m-rated man has not played a competitive game for Manchester United in 19 months, with his most recent appearance coming in the club’s 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup back in January 2020.

Furthermore, in his two Premier League appearances that same season, the player Rio Ferdinand recently dubbed a “waste of time” failed to impress whatsoever, making an average of one interception, one tackle and losing possession of the ball 9.5 times per fixture.

These returns saw the 29-year-old earn a disappointing average SofaScore match rating of 6.75, something that, considering his two appearances came against Sheffield United and Burnley, perfectly demonstrates how far the centre-back has fallen.

As such, it could easily be argued that a move by Silva for the England international this summer would be the Portuguese manager’s biggest transfer mistake of his Fulham career to date, as the centre-back looks unlikely to be an upgrade on any of the club’s current options in the position, while he would also likely cost a substantial amount of money in wages.

Lancashire unveil plans for 'New' Trafford

Lancashire have revealed plans for a massive four-year redevelopment of Old Trafford which will turn England’s second-oldest Test venue into a state-of-the-art 25,000 capacity stadium

Lancashire have revealed plans for a massive four-year redevelopment of Old Trafford which will turn England’s second-oldest Test venue into a state-of-the-art 25,000 capacity stadium. The project is part of a £200 million investment into a site surrounding the ground.Trafford Council has welcomed the proposals, part of an innovative sports-led regeneration strategy for a 50-acre mixed use neighbourhood in Old Trafford. A planning application for the first phase of the new stadium development will be lodged imminently with works potentially starting in early 2009, and phased over consecutive years until completion in late 2012.The proposals include new player and media facilities, as well as conferencing, banqueting and hotel facilities. There will be two new grandstands which will give a permanent capacity of 15,000, but up to 10,000 more will be able to be accommodated by means of temporary seating. There will also be floodlights and permanent replay screens. The first phase includes a new outfield, based on the system in place at Lord’s, and this is being laid during the close season. The new designs also include the re-orientation of the wicket, to see the square run from north to south for the first time in 150 years. Changing the original east to west orientation will resolve sunlight issues which have affected players. The new square, which will take 18 months to bed in, will also be larger in size, allowing for five new wickets to be constructed, giving Lancashire the ability to bid for more high profile matches, including internationals. To allow the wicket to be ready in time for The Ashes in 2013, play would need to begin on the new square in 2011.

“The proposals come at a time of fierce competition for the rights to stage Test matches which has recently seen the ground, and the region, fail to secure any for the foreseeable future,” a statement issued by the county said. “The significant investment being made in the new facilities will ensure that Old Trafford regains its rightful place on the Test circuit in time for the 2013 Ashes Test.””The Old Trafford brand has a massive standing in world cricket. The club has been on the same site since 1857,” Jim Cumbes, Lancashire’s chief executive, said. “Our membership and cricket lovers everywhere recognise the contribution that the club makes locally to the economy through visitor attraction, image, marketing and employment in the borough.”Together with our local partners, the Northwest Development Agency and Sport England, we will work towards delivering a scheme which will have at its heart a new stadium fit for the next 150 years, and which will be recognised as world-class standard, fit for the UK’s greatest sporting city region and serving the huge cricketing fan base in the north west.

Superstars in name only

It is ironic, given the vast sums of money that have been put up for grabs in the coming days, that the opening fixture of the Stanford Super Series counted for absolutely nothing

Andrew Miller in Antigua26-Oct-2008

It is ironic, given the vast sums of money that have been put up for grabs in the coming days, that the opening fixture of the Stanford Super Series counted for absolutely nothing. There was no prize money on the table, and in the end, no lasting memories either, as the underdogs of Trinidad and Tobago failed in their bid to secure regional bragging rights against the misleadingly named Stanford Superstars.Instead the big guys beat the little guys with ease, displaying the sort of Caribbean cool that looked like simplicity but came within a whisker of being grossly inefficient. With Chris Gayle dropping out of the line-up because of a family problem, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul suffering from a stiff neck, the Superstars line-up was anything but, and that was before their one remaining class act, Ramnaresh Sarwan, was bowled first ball by Samuel Badree. In fact, had it not been for a pair of key performances from two of Trinidad’s finest – Kieron Pollard and Dave Mohammed – the result could easily have gone the other way. With those two turning out for the Superstars and bowling tidily at key stages of the chase, and a third member of their trophy-winning side – Rayad Emrit – sitting on the opposition bench, Trinidad were forced to field three debutants in Justin Guillen, Kevon Cooper and Navin Stewart. Gutsily as the trio performed, this isn’t exactly an ideal week to blood the next generation.Middlesex, Trinidad’s next opponents, may have similar gripes if Owais Shah makes the difference for England in Sunday’s encounter, but by and large they have fewer such issues to contend with, as Daren Ganga disconsolately pointed out. “In an ideal world I’d have wanted to have an even game, but there’s no what if,” he said. “Middlesex have the benefit of an overseas player, so it’s a bit disappointing, but this is a wonderful opportunity for the young guys to show their mettle. I’m sure this will do well for them and their careers.”Ganga said that there would be squad changes ahead of the Middlesex showdown, with experienced campaigners such as Richard Kelly and Amit Jaggernauth ready to compete for their share of a US$280,000 prize. But regardless of Trinidad’s inexperience, they still managed to cause enough problems to a ragged Superstars line-up to reinforce the notion that England are clear favourites for the US$20 million match next Saturday. It wasn’t merely the manner in which Trinidad restricted the Superstars to an insubstantial 146 for 5 in their 20 overs. It was the contrast in approaches of the two batting line-ups. Stanford’s men responded to a probing opening burst from Ravi Rampaul and Badree with woolly swipes and impetuosity – best exemplified by the mow across the line that accounted for Travis Dowlin. The Trinidadians meanwhile remained calm throughout their innings (too calm, as it eventually turned out). With five overs to go they were exactly up with the Superstars run-rate, and the fact that they fell short in the final analysis said more about the gulf in class than any tactical failings. “It was a disappointing loss, but this will give us good momentum going into the Middlesex game,” Ganga said.Of the two sides, it is the victors who will have the greater concerns ahead of their future encounters, despite the protestations of their stand-in captain, Sylvester Joseph. “The pitch wasn’t the best and 140-50 was a challenging total,” he said. “I thought we lost a few wickets too early, but we knew Trinidad would come at us hard. They were competitive tonight and though they fell short, overall the game was a good one.”But there is an awful lot to be won and lost by the Superstars before this week is out, and the lapses they displayed in the field – in particular a howler of a dropped catch from Pollard at midwicket – didn’t augur well for when the pressure is cranked up a million notches next Saturday.”There are areas we need to work on. We need to work on our bowling, and in the field there were a few blunders,” Joseph said. “We’ve been preparing for six weeks under these conditions, but we’ve not had a crowd or the media watching us. I think tonight was a trial for us, and hopefully we’ll come back to show a better performance in the field.”
