Everton have cruised through the summer transfer window in unspectacular fashion.

The Toffees have signed four new players but have only spent £1.7m. Rafa Benitez may have expected to be given more license to spend but it hasn’t had an adverse impact on the squad.

What’s the word?

Although Everton haven’t thrown their chequebook around this summer, they have still secured seven points from three matches in a promising start to the season.

What bodes well is that they’re also trying to improve the squad before the deadline passes in just over 24 hours’ time. Luis Diaz could arrive from Porto, while former Newcastle striker Salomon Rondon is also a target.

However, the player Everton should sign instead is Odsonne Edouard. The Sunday Mail (29/08 – via Sky Sports) suggests that the Merseyside outfit are battling Tottenham, Brighton and Crystal Palace for his signature.

Edouard has been a highly sought-after player for a while now but his wage demands had priced the Frenchman out of a move before deadline day. It’s thought that he may cost in the region of £20m.

Wonderful signing

If Benitez secures Edouard over Rondon on transfer deadline day, it would ensure that Everton end the transfer window with an almighty bang.

The striker has downed tools with Celtic over the last few months and nothing typified that more than a horrendous miss from just yards out in Sunday’s Old Firm derby against Rangers.

However, the 23-year-old is more than that. He is usually a wonderfully composed finisher from inside the area. He is a tall and powerful forward but possesses an incredible first touch which he uses to his advantage to subsequently outmuscle defenders.

However, most vital to his play is the goalscoring antics he has created in Glasgow. Edouard found the net on 22 occasions in 41 outings last season, a tally which beat Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goals for the campaign by one.

On top of that, he has beaten the goalkeeper 86 times in 179 appearances for the Hoops. Therefore, he’d surely bring a heap of goals with him to Merseyside.

With Richarlison potentially heading for the exit door, Everton will definitely need another prolific attacker in their ranks, and Edouard fits the bill perfectly.

Speaking about the Celtic star last year, Frank McGarvey waxed lyrical about his qualities, saying: “He has that bit of magic in his feet.”

Scotland defender Declan Gallagher added: “His one-touch play, his link-up, he’s two-footed – he has got absolutely everything, all the attributes. It’s hard to stop him. When Edouard is on that kind of form he is unplayable.”

With that in mind, Benitez must attempt to wrap up a deal. It could be the difference between a mere top half placing or a European finish.

وحسبما ذكرت صحيفة “ديلي ستار” الإنجليزية، فإن مانشستر يونايتد يأمل استغلال صفقة فرينكي دي يونج من أجل حسم التعاقد مع إريكسن.

وأوضحت أن مسؤولي مانشستر يونايتد يأملون أن الوصول المتوقع لـ دي يونج إلى الأولد ترافورد سيقنع إريكسن بالانضمام إلى مشروع تين هاج.

ويحرص تين هاج على تحقيق أهدافه في وقت مبكر حيث يأمل أن ينضم إليه لاعبون جدد في جولة مانشستر يونايتد قبل الموسم لتايلاند وأستراليا الشهر المقبل.

A ideia era obter um empréstimo de uma temporada do Ludogorets, da Bulgária, mas na última hora os europeus decidiram cobrar pelo negócio, condição que o Corinthians não aceitou. O representante de Cicinho que cuidava da negociação já voltou ao Brasil após o fim das negociações.

Sem Fagner, que está com a Seleção Brasileira, e Léo Príncipe, em tratamento de lesão, o Corinthians tem improvisado o volante Paulo Roberto na lateral. A goleada no primeiro da sequência de três jogos sem Fagner também motiva o desaquecimento da busca por outra peça para o setor.

وتقام بطولة دورة ألعاب البحر المتوسط في مدينة وهران بالجزائر، خلال الفترة من 25 يونيو وحتى 6 يوليو المقبل، بمشاركة 183 لاعبًا ولاعبة مصرية في 19 رياضة مختلفة.

وقال العريان خلال تصريحات للمركز الإعلامي باللجنة الأولمبية: “نتائج مصر في دورة ألعاب البحر المتوسط، كانت متوقعة بشكل علمي ومدروس قبل انطلاق البطولة ولكننا فضلنا عدم الإفصاح عن هذه التوقعات واحترام ما أعلنته الاتحادات المختلفة واللجنة الأولمبية”.

وأضاف: “لقد قدمت تقريرا مفصلًا قبل انطلاق دورة ألعاب البحر المتوسط بشهر كامل وأكدت فيه أن مصر ستحصل على عدد ميداليات مقارب لما حققته في النسخة الماضية من الدورة بتاراجونا حين حصد الفراعنة 45 ميدالية متنوعة ولكن الحصول على نفس عدد الميداليات الذهبية والذي كان 18 ميدالية هو الأمر الصعب”.

وتابع: “حسب الأرقام والاحصاءات التي أجريتها قبل انطلاق الدورة والتي سجلتها في تقريري، توقعت حصد مصر في حدود 45 أو 46 ميدالية بحد أدنى 42 وحد أقصى 51 ميدالية، ولكن الميداليات الذهبية ستكون أقل وتوقعت حصد نحو 12 ميدالية ذهبية بحد أدني 11 ذهبية وحد أقصى 13 ذهبية، وفيما يخص الترتيب النهائي فمن المتوقع حصول مصر على المركز من الخامس للسابع من إجمالي 26 دولة وهو ترتيب جيد يليق بمكانة مصر الرياضية، وستسبقنا نفس الدول التي سبقتنا فيما قبل وهي فرنسا وايطاليا وإسبانيا وتركيا بالإضافة إلى الجزائر البلد المضيف وهو أمر طبيعي أن تستفيد الجزائر بإقامة الدورة على أرضها كما سيكون للتحكيم دورا هاما في هذه الدورة”.

وأتم: “هذه الدورة تعد إعدادًا جيد جدًا لكل أبطالنا في جميع اللعبات للتقدم وتحقيق الأفضل والأهم وهو التأهل لدورة الألعاب الأولمبية باريس 2024، وايضًا تحقيق نتائج مميزة في بطولات العالم المختلفة لعامي 2022 و 2023”.

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Jordan Hugill will come in and lead the line for West Bromwich Albion.

Hugill signed for the Baggies on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Norwich City.

The 29-year-old has plenty of Championship experience, making 208 appearances in the division for Preston North End, Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers, Norwich and now West Bromwich Albion.

In those 46 occasions and has provided a further seven goals for his teammates. West Brom’s newest signing made his debut for the club last weekend, as he was a second-half substitute in the Baggies 1-0 win against Peterborough United.

Hatfield believes that Hugill will lead the line for West Brom, telling Football FanCast: “Well a striker was always going to be the biggest one for Albion, but for Ismael like I said before it was about getting the right man in, with the right mentality.

“I think a lot of people are almost understating the signing of Hugill. I think he is probably the man that Ismael really wants to lead the line.

“I think Hugill is someone he’s really happy to have brought into the club. You know, with fans they’re always desperate to see a big name signing, a marquee signing, a striker and I think the one which fans probably wanted was Daryl Dike.”

West Bromwich Albion have made a fantastic start to life back in the Championship, as the Baggies have picked up 13 points from a possible 15 so far and currently sit second in the league table, with only Fulham ahead of them on goal difference as they look to make an immediate return to the promised land.

Sunderland’s traversal of the Premier League, Championship and League One in recent times has seen their transfer strategy change immeasurably.

This has seen them go from spending £18m on Didier Ndong whilst in the Premier League to landing Aiden McGeady for just over £250k in the Championship and the current iteration of signings in League One under Lee Johnson, such as Callum Doyle and Leon Dajaku, on loan.

Along with their signings, the Black Cats have also made plenty of sales along the way. An unfortunate side-effect (beyond the obvious) of being relegated is that a club’s promising young talents may get snapped up by those further up the footballing ladder.

This was the case in 2018 when Joel Asoro was sold to Swansea following the Wearsiders’ relegation to League One. The Swedish attacker recouped the club a reported £2.07m through his move to Wales at the age of 19, but was it the right call?

From Sunderland’s perspective, they will be over the moon with the deal in hindsight due to what he has gone on to do since leaving the Stadium of Light. As per Transfermarkt’s valuation system, he is currently valued at a paltry £405k and is playing in Sweden for Djurgarden.

This means that his value has dropped £1.66m from £2.07m upon his sale in 2018 to £405k currently. His valuation would need to increase by over 500% for him to reach the level he was at when he joined Swansea, which highlights how far he has plummeted as a player since departing Sunderland.

At the time of the sale, Asoro had built a decent reputation after scoring three goals and setting up two in 26 Championship appearances for the Black Cats. This was a solid return for a teenager making his first foray into professional football, suggesting that he had the potential to go on to greater things.

However, it clearly has not worked out that way for him. He failed to score in 18 senior appearances for Swansea and now finds himself plying his trade in Sweden at the age of 22. This shows that Sunderland struck gold by selling him when they did.

Given his form since leaving the club, Asoro may have gone on to flop with the Black Cats, and then they would never have been able to sell him for as much as they did. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, of course, but Sunderland will surely be looking at his current situation and feel thankful that they decided to cash in on him when Swansea came knocking for £2.07m.

They managed to strike gold at the perfect time and, unfortunately for Asoro, it has been all downhill for the player since then. It is a shame that he has not been able to live up to his early potential, but purely from his former club’s perspective, they will be delighted that they made the most of his value in 2018 given what has happened since.
