Flintoff hopes security won't distract team

England allrounder says tight security may be a distraction but believes normal service will resume when the first Test gets underway in Chennai on Thursday

England landed in Chennai on Monday night and woke up to a wet Tuesday but allrounder Andrew Flintoff believes the real challenge will be the extra security they will receive. “The environment is going to be completely different when you talk about commandos and hotels being locked down,” he told the after the squad arrived from Abu Dhabi. “That is going to be a challenge for the lads. A few of us experienced something similar here in 2002 when we had guards everywhere, but hopefully that will wear off pretty quickly.”He believed normal service would resume once the first Test got underway on Thursday. “Once you’re out in the middle bowling at Sachin Tendulkar or trying to hit Harbhajan Singh around, I don’t think you’ll be worrying about who might be around off the ground. I think that will happen more when you’re at the hotel or mooching around.”The team have made the decision to go and play cricket in India and we want to give a good account of ourselves. These circumstances might make the team tighter and hopefully this can be reflected in the results.”According to the Joint Commissioner of Chennai Police, P Balasubramaniam, England’s stay in the city will be conducted behind a security blanket of more than 5000 personnel. A squad of 300 commandos will be at the hotel and 1000 police at the outer periphery of the hotel. Heavy security will also be in place all along the route to the stadium, and 2000 police personnel will be in attendance at the venue itself.Flintoff, along with Steve Harmison, was initially apprehensive of returning to the subcontinent to complete the tour. Apart from the series missing a competitive edge, personal safety and family concerns had also weighed on Flintoff’s mind.”That was one of the things I had to get right in my mind as well,” said Flintoff. “The one thing about me is that I have to be able to try my best when I get on a cricket field. So I had to be sure I could give my all. I took time to ring family and think it over myself. It was just a case of digesting it and getting it straight in my mind. We needed to know how the tour was going to take place and, once that was presented to us, we could then decide.”There was safety to consider and also whether it was right to be playing in India so soon after Mumbai. I can’t vouch for other players but for me the IPL didn’t come into it at all. Safety is far bigger than the IPL.”However, the team decision to return and the prospect of missing cricket made him rethink. “One of the reasons I decided to go was for my team-mates. We didn’t want to get into the position where the team was split up. Even though we got beaten during the one-day series against India, the spirit in the camp was really good and that’s something we don’t want to lose. So unity has played a major part.”

Reason for Zion Atta’s Palace exit revealed

Zion Atta left Crystal Palace after the Eagles refused to meet his wage demands, The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam reports.

The lowdown

16-year-old Atta has departed Selhurst Park and, according to Fabrizio Romano, is bound for Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice after a deal was ‘verbally agreed weeks ago’.

There was also interest from Italian giants Juventus, a marker of just how highly rated Atta is.

The attacker, capped by England at Under-15 level, made one appearance for Palace in the under-18 Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

Woosnam has been ‘told’ that Atta was demanding around £2,000 per week to remain at Palace.

But they weren’t willing to agree to those terms because it would mean breaking a ‘strict’ wage structure put in place for academy players.

The verdict

Palace fans might be frustrated to lose such an exciting talent. He may go on to footballing stardom and leave them wondering what might have been.

But while the temptation is do whatever it takes to keep such prospects, situations like this are a test of clubs’ principles.

You could even argue that, had they given in to Atta’s lofty demands, Palace could have risked unsettling a host of other young stars, who might in turn demand more money as a reflection of their value. Who knows if one of those youngsters is the one with superstar potential?

Leicester made a mistake over Demarai Gray

Leicester City must be regretting the decision to sell Demarai Gray in January after he began life back in the Premier League with a bang following his arrival at Everton.

The 25-year-old winger joined Bayer Leverkusen halfway through the 2020/21 campaign in a £1.8m deal after falling down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium, but he swiftly returned to his homeland.

One that got away?

Gray’s talent and potential has rarely been in doubt. He was one of English football’s most exciting young prospects after rising through the ranks at boyhood club Birmingham City, earning a move to Leicester during their title-winning campaign.

Although he only played a limited role in the Foxes’ incredible 2015/16 campaign, Gray established himself in the first team over the subsequent years and occasionally caught the eye with some outstanding performances.

“He was excellent,” Brendan Rodgers said after a win over Bournemouth back in 2019 (as relayed by the Leicester Mercury). “He has been training very well. He is a big talent, and he showed that when he came in.”

However, showcasing his talent on a regular basis has been the real issue for the former England under-21 international.

The flying forward has often started well under a new manager or at a new club, scoring three goals in his first seven league outings under Claude Puel before failing to find the back of the net in his final 20 top-flight appearances for Leicester.

A similar pattern occurred during his six-month spell in the Bundesliga when he scored once and provided two assists in his opening three fixtures for Leverkusen but failed to contribute in his last seven games.

Gray is now repeating the trick at Goodison Park. Three goals already this season for the Toffees has seen him score just one fewer than the whole Leicester squad put together while on league duty, elevating Everton into fourth position in the table.

It’s hard to criticise Leicester director of football Jon Rudkin given the exceptional work he’s done during his time with the Midlands outfit.

He has often sold key players at the perfect time, maximising the profit from their departures before wisely reinvesting the proceeds in the transfer market, allowing the current FA Cup holders to continually punch above their weight.

However, Gray may well turn out to be his biggest mistake of the century. Selling a highly promising young player for under £2m just as he was approaching his peak years when he will hopefully mature refine his game seems a totally illogical decision.

It remains to be seen whether the £7.2m-rated Gray can find the consistency over an extended period of time at Everton, but on the evidence of the opening month of the new campaign, Leicester fans must be regretting Rudkin’s fateful call to part ways with the 25-year-old winger.

'South African cricket's greatest year' – Smith

Graeme Smith has hailed a shift in the power-balance in world cricket after what he described as the greatest year in the South African team’s history. Smith entered the tour calm and composed and aiming to be the first man to lead South Africa to a serie

Graeme Smith has hailed a shift in the power-balance in world cricket after what he described as the greatest year in the South African team’s history. Smith entered the tour calm and composed and aiming to be the first man to lead South Africa to a series victory in Australia; it has taken barely a fortnight to complete the task and it rounds off a remarkable 12 months.”It’s got to be the best,” Smith said when asked where 2008 ranked in the history of South African cricket. “No disrespect for anything that’s gone before us, we’re very respectful of the history of our game, all the people who have had opportunities before us and who have never had opportunities.”But I think for us it’s got to be the most incredible season South African cricket has ever had, to sit here with the results we’ve got. I don’t think anyone could argue with that.”Over the past two years South Africa have built such a strong outfit that they have not lost a series since they visited Sri Lanka in 2006. This year they have beaten England in England and kept India to a drawn series in India, and with one more victory against Australia in Sydney they can jump to No. 1 on the ICC’s Test rankings.”I think the balance of power is evening out in world cricket,” Smith said. “Credit to Australia, they’ve dominated world cricket for a decade. I think they’ve obviously enjoyed that time. It doesn’t mean that they’re going to be beaten in future tours and be easier to beat. But I think the balance has evened out a little.”When Hashim Amla clipped the ball through midwicket for two to bring up the MCG victory, it completed a remarkable couple of weeks for the South Africans. At the WACA, they had been destroyed by Mitchell Johnson’s spell on the second afternoon and came back to record the second-highest fourth-innings chase in Test history. In Melbourne, they were 7 for 198 at stumps on day two and trailed by nearly 200; their tail wagged so ferociously that they earned a 65-run first-innings lead. They were the sort of fightbacks teams could only dream of against Australia in past seasons.”I think we’ve just been composed, I think we’ve just gone about playing our cricket,” Smith said. “When we’ve come out on the big days and been behind the game we’ve really played the better cricket when we’ve had to. I don’t think I could have dreamt of a partnership like we had at the back end on day three.”But it was the kind of performance that has defined South Africa’s 2008. Their stunning victory at Edgbaston was the highlight until this tour; it has now been comprehensively eclipsed. After the Melbourne win, Smith, the leading Test run-scorer for the calendar year, was sitting next to Dale Steyn, the highest wicket-taker in 2008. The men are 27 and 25, and it was a reminder that this youthful South African outfit has moved on from previous failures and could itself be the team that inflicts pain on other sides in years to come.”The word choker came up – we don’t have that kind of history on us,” Steyn said after winning the Man-of-the-Match award for his ten wickets and 76 with the bat. “If we can start winning like this, fresh in our careers, this is what we can continue and take forward. Maybe it starts off a new generation, I don’t know. I’m just very proud to be part of a side that’s achieved something special.”It is an effort that has captured the imagination of fans at home in South Africa. The match finished at around 5 am South Africa time; offices around the country were likely to be filled with bleary-eyed workers on Tuesday.”Just knowing back home and the hype around the series and what’s been written about it,” Smith said. “I think it’s only about five in the morning back home and my phone is filled with messages already. I think there are a lot of people who are lacking sleep.”The players themselves might be short on rest over the next couple of days as well. They head to Sydney for their New Year’s Eve celebrations before regrouping for the third Test, which starts on Saturday. For now, the order of the day is to live in the moment. “I don’t think there’s enough beer in all of Australia to satisfy us tonight, ” the spinner Paul Harris said.

Southampton eyeing Keane Lewis-Potter

An update has emerged regarding Southampton’s interest in Hull City winger Keane Lewis-Potter.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, Southampton are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old as they consider a swoop for the youngster.

The report claims that Saints are currently scouting his performances, with Hull potentially willing to sell him in the January transfer window.

Fans would love him

Martin Semmens must now sanction a January swoop for Lewis-Potter to bolster Southampton’s squad. The fans would love it as it could prove to be a shrewd piece of business in the long-term, with the Hull starlet only 20 years old.

Lewis-Potter has registered two goals and one assist in the Championship this season, whilst he also scored in the Carabao Cup against Wigan. This is after he managed 13 goals and five assists in League One as Hull were promoted out of the third tier in 2020/21, showing that he was able to produce regular despite his young age.

A move to the Premier League would represent another step up for him, but at the age of 20 he still has plenty of time to develop and fulfill his potential. Last year, Hull manager Grant McCann hailed the midfielder as a special talent and backed him to keep improving and progressing as a player.

He said: “The kid’s a special talent. Wherever we play him across that frontline, he’ll create and score goals.

“He can be anything he wants to be. He’s quick, he’s getting stronger. If you see him physically now compared to where he was this time last year, he’s head and shoulders above in terms of his physique. He’s got all the tools to be anything he wants.

“With young players you need to keep on at them. They need to keep understanding what’s expected on an everyday level. We’ve got good staff around here to help Keano keep progressing.”

That is why Saints fans would love this deal as the club would be investing in a young player who has already shown potential at senior level. Lewis-Potter has scored goals in League One and the Championship and scouts will continue to track his progress between now and January, which could give a better indication as to whether or not he would be coming in to play at St Mary’s or go back out on loan.

What happens in the short-term is not as important as the long-term planning, though. Saints fans will surely love that Semmens is trying to iron out a plan for the future by bringing in talented prospects who could become key players further down the line, which is why he must secure a deal for Lewis-Potter.
