Diogo Barbosa projeta grande jogo contra o Flamengo

Leeds youngster Bate picks up injury

Leeds United have suffered an injury blow, with journalist Graham Smyth confirming that youngster Lewis Bate has picked up a knock on England duty.

The Lowdown: Bate joins Leeds

The Whites brought in the likes of Junior Firpo and Dan James in the summer transfer window, but Bate’s arrival went a little more under the radar.

The 18-year-old midfielder joined from Chelsea back in July, which was seen as a coup, given his potential – he was just this week tipped for a breakthrough into the first team.

The Latest: Youngster injured

Bate was in action for England Under-2os on Thursday evening, starting against Italy, along with fellow Leeds starlets Cody Drameh and Sam Greenwood.

Unfortunately, he didn’t see out the 90 minutes, limping off with an injury that Smyth confirmed in an eight-word verdict on Twitter:

“Looked like ankle or foot was the issue.”

The Verdict: Another setback for Whites

Leeds have been picking up key injuries this season, from Diego Llorente to Patrick Bamford, and this is another blow for a talented young player.

Granted, Bate isn’t part of Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team plans currently, but he has been progressing well and this layoff could stunt his progress.

The hope is that it is nothing serious, however, and that the teenager can continue to thrive at Elland Road, having made eight appearances for the Under-23s to date.

IPL schedule likely to be finalised next week

The IPL schedule is likely to be finalised early next week with India’s Home Minister P Chidambaram travelling to Chennai this weekend

Cricinfo staff20-Mar-2009The IPL schedule is likely to be finalised early next week with India’s Home Minister P Chidambaram travelling to Chennai this weekend. “The Home Minister is leaving [for Chennai] today and will only be back on Monday. It [likely decision] may only happen now on Monday,” a Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) spokesperson told Cricinfo. The central government is still waiting for the written feedback from the states slated to host the IPL matches – only two have responded so far – to take a final call. “Only Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have got back,” the MHA spokesperson said without revealing if the two states had guaranteed the security for the IPL games.Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, today said the league was prepared to face any sort of “eventuality” and had put in place remedial measures if necessary. “We have multiple iterations for multiple schedules with multiple possibilities,” he said. “We are taking every eventuality into account but let us not pre-empt anything.”IPL officials said following states had given them security assurances: Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh. They were still waiting for responses from three states – Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu. With the heightened concerns over cricketers’ safety following the Lahore attack, the IPL has reportedly placed an order for 80 armoured vehicles to be delivered within 15 days. “This [bullet-proof vehicles] is a recommendation that has been given to us,” the quoted an unnamed IPL official as saying. “We’re looking into it and we’re hoping we will manage it.” However, said IPL officials refused to comment when asked about the report.

Modi, Majola to make announcement on IPL

In a swift turnaround, South Africa has overtaken England as the preferred venue to host the IPL next month

Lalit Modi: Has a good personal equation with Gerald Majola•Associated Press

In a swift turnaround, South Africa has overtaken England as the preferred venue to host the IPL next month. Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, met with Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola in Johannesburg on Tuesday, and the pair will conduct a press conference to discuss the outcome of their meeting at 3pm GMT. Should South Africa be named the host nation, it is unclear whether Modi will continue with his scheduled trip to London on Wednesday.Weather has turned out to be the principal factor to have swayed the BCCI officials, a bulk of whom had been in favour of England until Monday morning when the realisation occurred that rain could seriously affect “as many as 70% of the matches” in the Twenty20 tournament, which runs from April 10 to May 24.Another reason for England’s chances receding is the assurance from top officials within the South African government and Cricket South Africa that the IPL will receive the full red carpet treatment, well-placed sources said.”The weather in South Africa seems to have become the deciding factor,” the sources said. “Besides, South Africa is working out to be a much cheaper option. The South African government’s interest in hosting the event is a major factor, too.” However, Modi is also scheduled to leave Johannesburg for London on Tuesday evening to meet ECB officials, who have also expressed interest in hosting the event.South Africa is also considered a better option when it comes to TV timings in comparison to England. For instance, the IPL wants to start its first match of the day at 4 pm IST, which would mean a 11.30 am start in England. In South Africa it would be a 12.30 pm start. The TV rights scenario is also less complicated in South Africa as Supersport owns the rights both for the IPL and for international cricket played in the country. Additionally, the cost of running the tournament in South Africa would be substantially less than in England. And the fact that the South African domestic season concludes a day before the IPL’s scheduled start date should lead to less logistical problems than in England, where the county season will be just underway.Modi and Majola are known to have a strong personal relationship, especially since the two boards became founding partners of the Twenty20 Champions League last year. It is believed that such a rapport would prove crucial in organising a tournament of this magnitude at such short notice. “This gives both the boards a lot of room for negotiations, adjustments and quick decisions, something that may not be possible with the ECB, which has to go by its board for almost every decision,” the sources said.Cricket South Africa (CSA) summoned their provinces to a teleconference on Monday afternoon, where they were updated on the latest IPL developments. “We have been told to expect a decision by Wednesday morning,” said a South African provincial official with knowledge of the conference call. “We have had some early discussions about what we might need to do to prepare for this, but as far as we are aware, no final decisions have been made.”Majola spoke cautiously on Monday evening when asked to assess South Africa’s chances of hosting the IPL’s second season. “Until I meet with Mr Modi and BCCI officials and know exactly what they want and how they think this should proceed, then I cannot say where we stand,” Majola said. “It has been strangely quiet since we were first asked by officials from the BCCI and IPL whether we can assist them, and to the best of my knowledge we remain just one of the options out there. We are interested in assisting, but we have not heard anything further.”Shaun Pollock, the former South African captain and current advisor to the Mumbai Indians, said he would be open to serving as a conduit between his IPL franchise and the KwaZulu-Natal board if approached. Pollock is currently in Durban with eight members of the Mumbai squad for a pre-season training camp.”I would love the Mumbai Indians to come to Durban,” Pollock said. “But, having said that, I don’t know who will decide which franchise goes where, or even if (the IPL) will come here. It’s hard to know at the moment. One person tells you it’s 60-40 in South Africa’s favour and another tells you it’s 60-40 to England. But if it were to come here, I would be happy to help Mumbai if they were interested in basing themselves in my home area and conditions.”As of Sunday evening, England had emerged as the preferred venue to host the tournament after a powerful lobby within the BCCI and the Indian team management felt that such a move would help in preparing for the World Twenty20 in June. However, that decision was almost entirely dependent on the ECB overcoming considerable obstacles related to costs and logistics and the approval of its stakeholders, including the counties, many of whom fear that their domestic schedule will be affected by the IPL.Apparently, there is also a certain amount of concern at the ICC level about the state of venues in England for the World Twenty20 starting on June 5. The IPL will run until May 24 alongside the English domestic season starting in April and the West Indies Test series in May. “It’s the beginning of the season in England and Wales and there is a lot of Twenty20 cricket being played including the ICC World Twenty20,” David Morgan, the ICC president, told . “I do think there will be great difficulties in relocating it.”

WHU fans love Lingard news

West Ham United fans have been reacting to the news that Manchester United are allegedly prepared to sell Jesse Lingard for £15m in January.

Last season, Lingard made the loan move to the London Stadium from Old Trafford for the second half of the campaign, and he proved to be a fantastic addition to David Moyes’ squad. He made 16 appearances in the Premier League for the Hammers, scoring nine times and providing five assists as he helped West Ham qualify for the Europa League (Transfermarkt).

However, despite interest from Moyes and co in the summer (via football.london), Lingard stayed put in Manchester instead of making the move south.

Now, though, it appears, United are willing to accept an offer of £15m for the England international, who has featured six times in the league already this term.

The news was shared on Twitter by @FootballlForAll, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Edwards makes Newcastle budget claim

Luke Edwards has dropped a fresh update on Newcastle’s budget heading into PIF’s first transfer window on Tyneside.

What’s the talk?

The Telegraph reporter has claimed that the Magpies “can always spend more” than their pre-set January budget if a “box office” player becomes available in the winter market.

He made the claim in response to his own exclusive stating that they have a £50m transfer war chest for January, as PIF look to make moves to improve the team midway through the season.

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be left feeling delighted by this update from Edwards. For starters, they will be over the moon with the initial report stating that the club are preparing to splash out £50m in January as Mike Ashley only made one signing, Joe Willock, in the summer for £26.4m.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan from Arsenal, which meant that the Magpies added no fresh senior players to the squad over the summer. Converting Willock’s loan into a permanent deal was the only first-team incoming piece of business, with Newcastle failing to strengthen any area of their team from the one that finished the 2020/21 campaign.

Therefore, fans will be buzzing with the prospect of such a vast sum being spent in January to improve the team. It will give Steve Bruce, or whoever potentially replaces him in the dugout, additional firepower to attack the second half of the season in a bid to avoid relegation and push further up the Premier League table.

The supporters will also love Edwards’ added point about a potential marquee signing. His comment shows that PIF are ambitious and ready to invest the money required to make significant improvements to the team, as they are willing to pay more than they have initially set out if an opportunity arises to bring a big-name to St. James’ Park.

It remains to be seen what defines a ‘box office’ player for PIF, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mauro Icardi, Gareth Bale and Timo Werner touted with moves to the club. For example, would they splash out to sign Icardi? What about Sterling? January could be a very interesting, and exciting, window for Newcastle fans and Edwards’ comment will only add to the excitement levels bubbling away.
