Strauss laments England's 'horror show'

Disconsolate, grave and more than a little humiliated, Andrew Strauss stood upon the dais to a chorus of jeers and described his side’s batting capitulation as a “horror show”

On a sun-kissed afternoon in south London, a capacity Oval crowd and a rapturous nation celebrated with rare fervour as Andrew Strauss held aloft the Ashes urn for the first time as England captain. Twenty-five days later, on a frigid evening in Nottingham, the same man was booed by the few spectators who had bothered to remain at Trent Bridge for the closing stages of England’s sixth consecutive one-day defeat to Australia, this by an embarrassing 111-run margin. Even Ashes goodwill has its limits.Few sportsmen experience their career zenith and nadir inside a month, but such is Strauss’s lot at present. England’s turgid one-day form has ensured the euphoric memories of The Oval have been relegated to the deep recesses of the mind for now, and the heckling of Strauss at the post-match presentation at Trent Bridge demonstrated just how dramatically the nation’s mood had swung. In fairness, Strauss is the last England player deserving of spectator vitriol. Too often this series he has been the sole batsman to show backbone in an otherwise invertebrate England line-up, and his series record of 220 runs at 36.66 would make for even better reading were it not for the incorrect decisions levelled against him in the last two matches. Still, as the frontman of a team facing an unprecedented 7-0 series defeat, the slings and arrows were always going to fly in his direction. And Strauss was not shirking the issue on Tuesday.Disconsolate, grave and more than a little humiliated, Strauss stood upon the dais to a chorus of jeers and described his side’s batting capitulation as a “horror show.” The sugar-coating of the opening week of the campaign was over. Brutal truths were being addressed.”I can understand the frustration of the crowd,” Strauss continued at the post-match media conference. “It was a very poor performance tonight. Certainly, we were never in the hunt with the bat and we made a huge number of mistakes certainly with our batting performance. It’s been something that’s been building over the course of the six games we’ve played.”I’m not going to sit here and make any excuses. What we have shown so far in this series hasn’t been good enough, and far from it. As a group of players and as individuals we need to stand up and show some character now. It’s as simple as that.”It’s a very simple process. Sitting around in a team room having a chat about it is not going to solve anything. What is going to solve it is a couple of guys standing up and showing the necessary character to go out and turn things around. That’s the only way it can happen and our players have got to do it. It’s as simple as that.”Given the parlous state of England’s limited-overs game, it is difficult to envisage Strauss’s men making an impact at the Champions Trophy from next week. Meek batting, muddle-headed running between the wickets and indisciplined fielding have all contributed to England’s depressing decline against an Australian side soundly defeated by South Africa earlier this year.Redemption is clearly out of the question, however there remains one last chance for England to restore a modicum of limited-overs pride ahead of their departure for South Africa on Monday. Staving off an historic whitewash by a driven Australian side at Chester-le-Street would be a worthy effort in the circumstances, and one Strauss has yet to give up on.”Six-nil is bad enough to be honest with you,” he said. “We’ve got one more opportunity to show our calibre as a side. We need to take that opportunity.”This has been damaging for the one-day unit because confidence has become increasingly frail. That takes some getting from. It’s not impossible to get back from it. I remember in Australia in 2006-07 we were in a similar state and Paul Collingwood got a couple of hundreds and things turned around.”I don’t think it affects our Test prospects particularly. I’ve been around plenty of the times when the one-day team hasn’t performed well and the Test team has performed very well and adequately. It’s important to compartmentalise this, but in this one-day compartment no one likes to be losing six games in a row. The simple fact of the matter is we need to improve and we need to do it quickly.”If nothing else, England’s embattled limited-overs players can take heart from the fact that their leader is not set to abandon them anytime in the near future. Despite his descent from Test conqueror to one-day pariah, Strauss reaffirmed his desire to continue captaining England’s 50-over side irrespective of whether the role might tarnish his over all legacy.”If anything it makes me more determined to make a very, very strong effort to turn things around,” he said. “I’m more motivated by that than ever right at the moment.”

Rangers could unearth new Roofe in Weston

Giovanni van Bronckhorst could not have dreamt up a better start to life in Glasgow after two wins from two as Rangers manager.

The Gers beat Sparta Prague 2-0 to ensure qualification from the group stage of the Europa League in his first game, before beating Livingston 3-1 in his first league match in charge.

In the short-term, the Dutchman’s focus may solely be on working with the current first-team squad and picking up results and momentum in all competitions. However, a long-term goal may be to make use of the academy and bring quality players through the youth set-up.

New Roofe

One academy player who could be unearthed during Gio’s reign is young forward Tony Weston. The attacker could end up being the new Kemar Roofe at Ibrox, if he is given an opportunity to show what he is capable of.

Weston joined the club from English side Blackpool in the summer of 2020 and has been thriving for the reserve team this season. In six cup matches, he has produced an impressive four goals – averaging a strike every 98 minutes on the pitch

He has also scored 15 goals in the Lowland League, with Rangers B having won 14 of their 19 matches in the competition. This shows that he is a lethal goalscorer for the club’s youth/reserve sides, with 19 goals in a maximum of 25 games to date.

In terms of the forward’s attitude, his former Blackpool manager Simon Grayson previously hailed his ‘pure enthusiasm’ for the game, saying:

“He’s got so much enthusiasm. The lads were watching what he was doing, where his pure enthusiasm and love of being a professional footballer is at the front of his mind.

“He’s got 30-year-old lads behind him in the warm-up and I’ve never known a 16- year-old lead with stuff like that.

“He’s got confidence in his ability and it’s great for him.”

This suggests that he has the mentality to go along with his apparent talent as a footballer. Therefore, he could have a great chance to make the step up to the first-team level at Ibrox, as he has the ability and desire to continue progressing through the ranks.

By offering him a chance in the senior squad, Gio could potentially unearth the new Roofe – who is a current English goalscorer in the team. The ex-Leeds man has registered an excellent 27 strikes in 54 competitive outings for the Gers and his fellow countryman’s record at youth level suggests he has the potential to hit those heights in the future.

Crystal Palace linked to Jason Knight

Crystal Palace could be set to secure a bargain deal in the upcoming January transfer window after being linked with a move for Derby County midfielder Jason Knight.

What’s the story?

According to Football League World, the Eagles are one of several Premier League teams interested in securing the highly-rated 20-year-old’s signature, with seven other top-flight sides listed as potential suitors.

The report states that: “Knight has emerged as a target for a host of Premier League clubs, with FLW sources indicating that Everton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Leeds, Burnley, and Newcastle are all keen.”

It then goes on to state that West Ham United have recently entered the race for Knight’s signature, sparking an intriguing battle for the youngster over the coming months.

Crystal Palace can seal bargain deal

With Derby currently in financial turmoil, it’s highly likely that Palace could seal a bargain deal for the £5.4m-rated maestro if they can convince him to move to south London.

The Rams’ administrators revealed on Friday that they’re hoping to have completed the sale of the club by late January, though they’ve refused to rule out selling some of the most talented stars in Wayne Rooney’s first-team squad over the winter window.

And that raises the prospect of Knight departing Pride Park in January, with the Ireland international one of Derby’s most promising prospects.

After making his senior debut back in 2019, the 5 foot 6 dynamo has gone to score 11 goals and provide three assists in 94 appearances for the Midlands outfit, firmly establishing himself in the starting XI.

Knight made an immediate impression on now manager Wayne Rooney following his arrival on a player-coach basis, and the Manchester United legend singled him out as a promising youngster who has a big future ahead.

“I’ve been really impressed with the way they’ve trained, particularly Knighty,” revealed Rooney. “His energy, his attitude. He almost reminds me of myself when I was younger in terms of no fear.

“And he’s got an aggression about him, not in terms of how he’s tackling, but in terms of how he runs, how he gets about the pitch. I’m looking forward to seeing how they do as I feel he can give us a lot of energy and a lot of creativity.”

Former Arsenal and Ireland star Liam Brady is also one of Knight’s many admirers, labelling him “intelligent” following a mature display at international level.

As a result, Steve Parish and co. must do all they can to snap up Knight’s services ahead of the extensive competition, providing Patrick Vieira with the tools he needs to continue the ongoing revolution at Palace.

The Eagles manager has cultivated a reputation for luring young talents to Selhurst Park already and the Derby gem simply has to become part of Vieira’s ongoing project.

Marcelo Bielsa drops Pascal Struijk update

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has dropped an injury update concerning Pascal Struijk.

What’s the latest?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Whites’ trip to Manchester City on Tuesday evening, the 66-year-old Leeds manager revealed that, despite recovering from a hip injury, the 22-year-old missed the 3-2 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday with a fresh injury to his knee – something that will keep the former Netherlands youth international sidelined this evening.

On the current condition of Struijk, Bielsa said: “He’s not going to be available. Pascal’s injury is not very frequent. An explosive movement made two bones in his feet collide together.

“That does not generate an injury, nor an articulation or muscular. It has the effect of a knock on his bone. That generates pain. Until that pain disappears it’s going to prevent him from playing. Sincerely, in my whole career, I have never seen an injury like that.”

Fans will be terrified

Considering that Struijk is becoming an increasingly important player within Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team squad at Elland Road, coupled with the fact that the Whites are currently in the midst of a rather severe injury crisis, the news that the defender will once again be out of action against the reigning Premier League champions on Tuesday night will undoubtedly terrify fans of the club.

Indeed, over his 12 league appearances so far this season, the £8.1m-rated man has made an average of 1.6 interceptions, 2.3 tackles, 1.4 clearances and has won 3.8 duels per game.

These returns have seen the centre-back average a SofaScore match rating of 6.79, ranking him as Bielsa’s 14th-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, with fellow centre-backs Robin Koch and Liam Cooper also currently out of action due to injury, as well as defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips, Bielsa has once again been left with very limited options in the heart of his defence for the trip to the Eithad, something that does not bode well whatsoever for Leeds’ chances of getting anything out of the game.
