Video reviews mixed on cutting edges

Plays of the day from the first day of Australia’s second Test against West Indies

Teapots for two
It has been quite some time since Australian gamesmanship was thrust into the spotlight, but an incident in the 35th over could change all that. Ricky Ponting and Doug Bollinger made no attempt to hide their displeasure when Shivnarine Chanderpaul survived a caught-behind appeal, a decision upheld when sent for review. Despite replays showing daylight between leather and willow, and the usually vociferous Brad Haddin muzzling his appeal, Ponting and Bollinger assumed the “teapot” stance for some time after the decision had been delivered. Ponting continued the conversation with Ian Gould, the square-leg umpire, at the end of the over. Not a happy bunny.Reviewed and confused
Australia’s second video challenge proved altogether more successful, though no less controversial. Hot Spot gave no indication Chanderpaul had edged Shane Watson to Brad Haddin, although the 45 degree replay appeared to show the ball deviating off the outside edge. That was enough for Asad Rauf to overturn Mark Benson’s original not-out decision and send Chanderpaul back to the pavilion for a well-struck 62. Stay tuned for further fall out.Rental row
Much has been made of the fact Brendan Nash and Mitchell Johnson once rented a house together, but clearly there is no love lost between the room-mates-turned-adversaries. Nash evaded a first-ball bouncer from Johnson at the Gabba last week, and the hostility continued at Adelaide when the paceman drilled his former Queensland team-mate in the forearm with a shorter delivery in the over before lunch. Nash temporarily retired hurt after the blow to receive treatment, sending Dwayne Bravo in to start the second session alongside the unbeaten Shivnarine Chanderpaul.Gayle blown away
Chris Gayle promised a more gritty batting display from the West Indians prior to the second Test, and the fourth-wicket pairing of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo delivered on the pledge with a determined century stand. Gayle, however, still appeared locked in Twenty20 mode, taking to the Australian new-ball attack with frenetic urgency, highlighted by a straight six off Bollinger in his second over of the day. Bollinger exacted his revenge as Gayle, cutting too close to his body, top edged a shorter delivery into the outstretched glove of Brad Haddin. It is safe to assume that Gayle, who the previous day admitted to not knowing who Bollinger was, is familiar with him now.The Watson two-step
Shane Watson’s footwork has been under intense scrutiny this summer, and so it continued on Friday. But rather than attention centring on Watson’s susceptibility to lbw decisions at the top of the order, talk instead focused on the allrounder’s enterprising, though ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to reel in a catch off Bravo on the square-leg boundary. Watson caught the ball inside the rope, but with momentum taking him towards the fence, he again released it into the air. Hopes of an Adam Voges-esque catch on the second grab were dashed, however, when he stepped awkwardly over the rope and watched forlornly as the ball lobbed over the boundary for six.

O treinador evitou o mistério e mostou a equipe o time titular, formado por Fábio; Ezequiel, Manoel, Murilo e Diogo Barbosa; Henrique, Lucas Romero, Rafinha e Thiago Neves; Arrascaeta e Rafael Marques.

No outro, a bola passou rente à trave esquerda do camisa 1.

Australia keen to host day-night Tests

Cricket Australia chairman Jack Clarke has expressed his keenness to host day-night Tests in Australia, but has admitted there would be compromises

Cricket Australia chairman Jack Clarke has expressed his keenness to host day-night Tests but says there will be compromises and it will not be within the ICC’s suggested time-frame. Clarke was responding to ICC president David Morgan, who had said he’d be “surprised and disappointed” if he didn’t see the concept of day-night Tests materialise within the next two years.”We are really keen for it to happen,” Clarke told the newspaper. “Why shouldn’t people be able to come after work and see four, five or six hours?”Without elaborating on what the compromises would be, Clarke said a fair share of fans might be resistant to change. “There’s always going to be people saying ‘why do you change anything’,” he said. “But if you don’t change anything you are going to go backwards at 100 miles per hour it seems to me. There’s going to be some compromises, let’s be honest about it.”The current format, Clarke said, had failed to draw in more fans and change was necessary to make the format more attractive. “We reckon we’ve missed a generation and we are going to make sure we don’t miss the next generation, but we need to have change . . . it has to be an event and not just a cricket match in some regards,” he said. The report quoted Clarke as saying that with the Ashes due next year they would struggle to conduct a day-night Test in the time frame mentioned by Morgan, but he hoped to be able experiment with Shield cricket in the next few years.Morgan, on December 16, had singled out Australian venues as ideal for the day-night Tests experiment. “If you look at a country like Australia with big stadia and very hot conditions, Australia is made for day-night Test cricket,” he said. “Eighteen months ago, I wouldn’t have been overly enthusiastic, thinking of the tradition and the records. But the way Test match cricket has changed over 130-odd years, I see [day-night Tests] as a very good reason for bringing the crowds out.

Wolves fans fume at Tim Spiers tweet

A number of Wolves supporters have been left stunned by a tweet from journalist Tim Spiers showing how few goals have been scored in recent matches.

Bruno Lage’s men held Champions League winners Chelsea to a 0-0 draw at Molineux on Sunday afternoon, in what was a good result for the home side. Wolves have responded well to recent 0-1 defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City, beating Brighton 1-0 away last week before the stalemate against the Blues.

Wanderers aren’t necessarily a team that neutral fans would choose to watch this season, though, judging by a statistic which has emerged.

Taking to Twitter after Sunday’s match, Spiers revealed that there have only been a total of four goals in Wolves’ last seven Premier League games, with 1-0 the highest score in any of those games as he joked that the team have “gone binary”. Lage’s men have conceded only twice in that time, but the trade-off is that they have netted just two goals at the other end.

Wolves fans react to Spiers’ observation

While Wolves currently sit eighth in the table, these fans have reacted negatively to Spiers’ observation about the spate of low-scoring outcomes, with some calling on club owners Fosun to take action as a result.

A diretoria sempre cogitou a renovação, acertada nesta sexta.

England keep Tests interesting … too interesting

The ICC should be very grateful to England. Whether they are winning, losing or drawing, it’s rarely dull

The ICC should be very grateful to England. They certainly make Test cricket interesting. Whether it’s winning, losing or drawing, it’s rarely dull. Five months after their great escape in Cardiff, their repeat performance at Centurion almost turned into the great cock-up. Instead it was left to the final pair of Paul Collingwood and Graham Onions to survive the final 19 balls. On the fourth evening of this game, Jimmy Anderson had recalled the Cardiff Houdini act, when he and Monty Panesar blocked out the last 69 deliveries to save a match that proved critical to their summer’s success. But he hadn’t banked on his team-mates taking his recollections as an invitation for a repetition. And yet, once again it was left to the last man – this time Onions – to help save the day. At least for Collingwood, who made a critical 74 back in July, it allowed him to have some control over events rather than watching from the balcony as happened against Australia.”It’s fair to say Cardiff was in the back of my mind most of the time,” Collingwood said. “It’s very satisfying when you walk off and know you’ve done something for the team and seen it through – and it’s nice to adapt your game to those situations. The best players in cricket can do that. But I don’t really like getting in those situations at all – and I hope we don’t get in too many in the future.”Test cricket, we are told, is on its last legs but recently we have seen New Zealand and Pakistan share the honours in an absorbing contest and the stirring efforts of West Indies in Australia. Of course some games won’t engage the emotions in the same way, but the wonderful aspect of the five-day game is its inherent ability to surprise, thrill and entertain, and pull drama out of nowhere. Even Andrew Strauss had to admit this was a great match, although he doesn’t fancy too many more.”I was going to say we have been fortunate to be in that situation a few times in the last 12 months, but I don’t think we are fortunate to be,” he said. “It was an outstanding Test match, full of ebbs and flows and both sides had opportunities to get on top. It was great to see the crowd here completely enthralled by what was unfolding, and we hope there will be more games like that to come in the series.”Strauss’s emotions came close to being very different. England were one wicket away from adding to their list of overseas embarrassments which, from recent years, include the famous demises at Adelaide and Kingston. Unlike Cardiff, where the feeling was one of pure joy at having somehow repelled Australia through that final day, on this occasion the overriding emotion was one of relief. “I hate it when No. 11 batsmen have to get us out of jail,” Strauss said. “It’s not their job to do that. But it says a lot for the individual.”And yet, the titanic climax to the final day shouldn’t really have come as a surprise. Back in 2007-08, when England batted out the final against Sri Lanka in Colombo for just three wickets down, Michael Vaughan commented how it was rare to see the team save a game so easily. Doing it the white-knuckle way is the more normal course of events. The drama began when Kevin Pietersen undid more than three hours of fine batsmanship, and a stand of 145 with Jonathan Trott, by trying to run a single to the bowler, Friedel de Wet. The fact that it was shortly after an interval may have had something to do with it, as Pietersen likes to keep his energy levels veering towards the hyperactive. Whatever the reason, it was a mad attempt at a single.”I won’t be blaming anyone,” Strauss said, although he may have though differently had Onions not survived. “Those misunderstandings happen in cricket all the time. It was a shame – those two were going very well together – but I’d rather focus on their outstanding partnership in a pressurised situation. Days like this are opportunities for guys to really show something special, and I think both of those two did today.”Almost as soon as Pietersen trudged off, however, thoughts turned back to Antigua in 1997-98 when Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe were guiding England to a fairly comfortably draw. Then there was a horrible mix-up which left Hussain run out and England duly subsided in the fading light, losing seven wickets in the final session alone. It brought the curtain down on Mike Atherton’s time as captain and while Strauss wouldn’t have faced the same fate if the tenth wicket had fallen on this occasion, he would still have had to sit through a sombre Christmas. However, the collapse didn’t really hit top speed until Trott was undone by a brute of a ball from de Wet. It was the latest example of how, almost at the click of the fingers, a collapse can overwhelm a batting unit, and it brought back memories of Jamaica earlier this year when England were humbled for 51 by Jerome Taylor and Sulieman Benn.On that occasion England were a fractured and dispirited rabble still in the immediate aftermath of the Pietersen-Moores debacle. The side has changed immensely since that time and they are now a cohesive unit with strong fighting qualities. But they still retain that irrepressible skill to make life exceedingly tough for themselves and, boy, did they do that here.

Newcastle set for Dan Ashworth talks

A major development has emerged on Newcastle United’s search for a director of football…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that the Magpies are prime for talks with a candidate over taking up the position to assist Eddie Howe moving forward.

He Tweeted: “Brighton have given Newcastle permission to speak with Dan Ashworth over director of football role. #BHAFC want 50yo to stay but won’t block talks. Ashworth on rolling contract so #NUFC would need to agree settlement if situation develops.”

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with this news for multiple reasons. Firstly, it suggests that PIF are finally closing in on an appointment that could be key for the club in the years to come, as the person entrusted with this role will be making major decisions and, essentially, sculpting the future of the side.

Ashworth, if he now takes the job, will be tasked with dealing with managers and transfers and that means that the on-field results will be directly linked to how well he performs. He needs to get the best coaches/staff in place along with as many top players, by Premier League standards, as he can to give the side the greatest chance of achieving success and that is why this appointment is pivotal.

Fans will also be delighted because the chief has an impressive track record. The 50-year-old worked with The FA for six years and was a key cog in the recent successes of England at senior and youth level. Current Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate previously lauded the impact he had, saying:

“I told Dan (Ashworth) as we walked in that he should feel really proud. The last time we came to one of these it was in St Petersburg three years ago but this time we walked in as world champions at U17 and U20 and we’ve been to a seniors’ semi-final, so we deserve our place at the table.

“That is a great credit to everyone involved, the backing the FA has given us in building St George’s Park and investing in the teams, to the work being done in youth development and to Dan in particular for putting those plans in place, which we have seen pay off for Spain, Germany and France. It’s up to us now to continue the work that’s been started.”

Since joining Brighton in 2019, the Seagulls have finished 16th and 15th in the Premier League and they are currently 13th in the table. This shows that he has been able to oversee a steady top-flight team without any major relegation scares, amassing more than 40 points in both campaigns.

This, along with his excellent work with England, shows why fans will be buzzing with this update from Ornstein on Newcastle’s pursuit of his services.
