Fearless Bangalore march on

Desperation ripped both ways at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Tuesday

Telford Vice21-Sep-2010In some hearts, desperation is the engine that does not know how to die. In others, it is the knife that stabs deep and deadly. That’s the double trouble with desperation, and it ripped both ways at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Tuesday.A place in the semi-finals of the Champions League T20 was at stake, and either the Highveld Lions or the Royal Challengers Bangalore would grab hold of it.On the night, Bangalore’s heart held firm like it hadn’t done before in this tournament. “Once we restricted them to that 159 for six, and once we got a solid foundation on the board in reply I knew we could do it,” said their captain, Anil Kumble.Batting at number three, Virat Kohli decided the issue with a feisty 49 not out off 29 balls. “I was waiting for one big over, and that was the 17th,” Kohli said. “It was very satisfying.”That over, which was bowled by Ethan O’Reilly, went for 19 runs and took Bangalore to within 24 runs of victory. Kohli made light of a shot he called the “short flick”, a snappy dab to the off side that earned a significant share of his runs.”No, I haven’t worked hard on it,” he said. “It just comes naturally; I don’t know how.”The Lions’ heart, alas for them and their fans, who had just begun to believe in them again after years of disappointment, failed.”We want to leave a legacy of champions,” said their visibly downcast skipper, Alviro Petersen. “Hopefully we’ve won the hearts of other fans who weren’t Lions supporters to begin with.”Glum or not, Peterson was proud of his team, who came into the event as no-hopers and shocked the Mumbai Indians in the opening match before going on to beat Guyana.”We fought all the way,” he said. “We went in with a mindset of disbelief, but it wasn’t good enough. The better team won.”We’ve given everything in this tournament; we’ve left nothing on the field. We’ve come up against phenomenal opposition, and it never really bothered us.”Bangalore’s reward is a trip back to Kingsmead in Durban for their semi-final.The fact that this venue was the scene of both of their defeats in the CLT20, at the hands of the South Australia Redbacks and the Mumbai Indians, didn’t seem to bother Kumble.”I don’t think we need to look at Durban as two losses,” he said. “There were a lot of positives to take out of the game against Mumbai. It was a case of just a few runs and we would have won that game.” The night wouldn’t have been complete if someone didn’t ask if Kevin Pietersen, who is due to return to his native South Africa soon to play two SuperSport Series matches for the Dolphins next month, would replace the injured Jacques Kallis in the Bangalore squad.”It’s a bit tough to say now,” Kumble said. “We have to go back and figure out who we can get.”And did he care who his team came up against in the semis?”No. It doesn’t matter.”If Kumble’s heart was beating any faster as he tossed those words into the mix carelessly, no one knew.

Man United dealt huge blow injury blow

Manchester United have been dealt another huge injury blow to the team following the defeat at Anfield last night.

What’s the word?

Ralf Rangnick has revealed the extent of Paul Pogba’s calf muscle injury sustained in the first half of the club’s away defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

The German coach told MUTV in his post-match conference:

“He pulled his calf muscle and, as it seems right now, this will not be an injury like the one Fred has which will be gone in one week.

“I fear he will not be available for Arsenal or Chelsea.”

Huge setback in the season

Pogba joins a long list of first-team players that have sustained injuries over the last few weeks with Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Fred and Edinson Cavani all not fit to play in last night’s game and Cristiano Ronaldo on compassionate leave.

This amount of injuries and absence from first-team players could ultimately be a huge setback and season-ending for Manchester United in terms of their pursuit for a spot inside the top four to secure Champions League football next season.

The squad and the midfield, in particular, will be weakened further ahead of the difficult Chelsea and Arsenal fixtures if Rangnick’s assessment is right on the Frenchman’s recovery time however, Scott McTominay was on the bench at Anfield so is likely to be fit for the games ahead following a foot injury.

Pogba is set to leave Old Trafford this summer with the £49.5m-rated midfielder unable to reach an agreement with the club to extend his stay. The “machine” will be out of contract so if his injury is more serious it could have been the last time we see the 29-year-old in a Man United shirt last night, with just five games left to go.

The Red Devils remain sixth in the Premier League matching Arsenal for 54 points however, the Gunners have two games in hand on their top-four competitor, whilst fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur have one game on Man United, so Rangnick will have to hope that both London clubs drop points to stay in with a chance of a fourth-place finish.

England’s cricketers have returned from their top-secret pre-Ashes bonding camp, which took them to Bavaria in southern Germany. The players departed last Thursday for the five-day trip organised by Reg Dickason, the team’s security officer, with only Andy Flower and his closest management aware of the destination beforehand. The players were told just to bring passports and walking boots and leave mobile phones behind, so there was no tweeting from Graeme Swann or Kevin Pietersen during the trip. They have spent the last few days near Nuremberg taking part in mental and physical challenges including boxing, hiking and abseiling. The trip was rounded off on Tuesday by a visit to the memorial site at Dachau, the first of Hitler’s concentration camps where more than 40,000 people died during the twelve years of its existence from 1933-1945.”Following our trip to Flanders last year, this was an opportunity for the players to spend time away from the cricketing environment, learn more about the wider world and develop ourselves both individually and collectively,” Andrew Strauss, the England captain, said. “It was a tough but rewarding five days and I know every player has gained greater insight into themselves, their own team environment and environments outside cricket.”The visit to Ypres before last year’s Ashes didn’t go without a few hitches as Andrew Flintoff missed the team bus one morning while Ravi Bopara forgot his passport and neither incident went down well with the team management. So far, at least, this latest expedition appears to have gone smoothly.Having completed an arduous season last Wednesday, when they secured the one-day series against Pakistan with victory at the Rose Bowl, the players weren’t thrilled with the prospect of the secret trip, but can now put their feet up for a few weeks before the squad comes back together ahead of leaving for Australia on October 29.

Everton could sign Pickford replacement

Following a nightmare season, Everton are now linked with signing a big replacement in the first team at the end of the season.

What’s the word?

According to The Mirror, Everton are ‘watching developments closely’ to potentially make a move for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer.

The report suggests that the future of Jordan Pickford could be in doubt, as the Toffees eye a move for the West Brom number one who will be out of contract this summer.

However, Everton will face tough competition in securing his signature as another Premier League club is linked, with Tottenham Hotspur also reported being interested in signing Johnstone.

Lampard must axe Pickford

If the opportunity arises for Frank Lampard to sign a new keeper, it might be the perfect opportunity to finally axe his current keeper who has not had a good season and become part of the problem in the club’s current relegation battle.

According to SofaScore, the keeper has conceded 1.7 goals per game and 50 goals in total in the Premier League this season, completing only 34% of his long balls and keeping only five clean sheets – the joint third-worst worst record in the league.

The Telegraph reported earlier this season that Tottenham were interested in signing the Everton flop to replace Huge Lloris, however, following the poor defensive record the side has carried this season, it may be an opportunity Antonio Conte decides to pass upon.

Pickford was recently slammed for being “out of control” following the 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace by Stephen Warnock who told Sky Sports:

“He’s just so animated, that for me, every time I see him I think there’s a mistake coming or he’s out of control in what he’s doing constantly.”

Johnstone on the other hand has been the recipient of high praise for his hard work at West Bromwich Albion this season and has been considered a hot prospect to many clubs following his performances for the struggling Championship side.

The £18k-per-week star who was hailed “outstanding” by Micah Richards has been a standout performer for his current club, with FBref ranking him in the top 81st percentile for saves, 85th for touches and 99th for launched passes this year compared to all goalkeepers in Europe – an impressive pretty feat considering the poor season West Brom are having.

With that being said, if Everton could secure Johnstone on a free this summer, while also selling Pickford to boost funds, it could be a great piece of business for the club.

However, Lampard must secure Premier League football next season to put themselves in a position to attract the keeper and rival Spurs for the signing.

Everton manager news on Dyche

Transfer insider Dean Jones has now dropped a big Everton manager claim involving Sean Dyche.

The Lowdown: Lampard under pressure

Frank Lampard is under huge pressure to guide the Goodison Park faithful to survival in the Premier League, as they currently find themselves lurking in the relegation zone, although with a game in hand on Dyche’s former club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Merseyside club reportedly have the option to part ways with Lampard at the end of the season, and could look to act on that if they were to go down to the Championship.

The Latest: Dyche talk

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has now shared ‘talk’ of Dyche potentially succeeding Lampard at the Toffees, but feels the Burnley icon would not ‘fit the mould’ for what they are looking for:

“I see people are starting to talk about Sean Dyche as a potential option for Everton. Typically, he wouldn’t really fit the mould.

“Moshiri likes to be ambitious and go for managers of profile and a certain elegance when it comes to the Premier League and world football status.”

The Verdict: Keep the faith

The manager situation will be a matter of waiting until the end of the campaign to see whether Lampard can keep them up, and if he does, the board should really keep the faith for next term.

There is no doubt that Dyche is a quality manager, having kept Burnley up for five straight seasons in the Premier League, including one seventh-placed finish (Transfermarkt).

However, Lampard needs to be given time to implement his ideas and bring in his own players to the club, so if the Blues were to stay up, then he should be given next season as well.

Maioridade completa!

– Estou me sentindo à vontade, o elenco tem me dado bastante apoio. Sei da responsabilidade que tenho, jogo em um grande clube, sei da pressão, de tudo o que envolve. Se eu quiser ser um grande jogador, tenho de corresponder na pressão ou na tranquilidade – comentou Brenner.
