New coach Sulakshan Kulkarni will be keen to get Mumbai back on track after a disappointing Ranji season in 2010-11•Sportz Solutions

Former Mumbai wicketkeeper-batsman Sulakshan Kulkarni has been appointed coach of the Mumbai team. The decision was taken at a meeting of the cricket improvement committee (CIC) of the Mumbai Cricket Association, chaired by Chandrakant Pandit, on Monday.Kulkarni, 44, was chosen ahead of Sanjay Bangar, Zubin Barucha, Zulfikar Parkar and Sandeep Dahad. “We discussed all names and their finer points but we finally settled for Sulakshan,” Pandit said. “We also asked [Balwinder Singh] Sandhu (a CIC member) whether he could take up the job but he didn’t want to. It had been too long and we didn’t want to waste time. We wanted to appoint the coach as early as possible.” However, the term of the coach is yet to be fixed.Kulkarni, who is presently coach of the Vidarbha team, played for Mumbai, Railways, Assam and Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy. He was part of the domestic circuit for 15 years and took 122 catches, made 21 stumpings and scored 3332 runs at an average of 38.29 in 65 matches. He also worked with the Mumbai junior teams before moving to Vidarbha.”What was impressive about Sulakshan was that he is focussed on two important aspects of Mumbai cricket,” Pandit said. “Having a strong bench strength and winning the Ranji Trophy is what he had planned for.”Apart from that, he has passion for Mumbai cricket and the attitude which every Mumbaikar should have,” Pandit said. “He has good strategies to perform and the focus was on having a strong bench strength.””It will be a real challenge for me,” Kulkarni told the . “I have worked here before too, and I’m looking forward to take charge soon. Coaching Mumbai always involves a lot of pride, and there is a great tradition that you have to take stock of.”Kulkarni succeeded former India batsman Pravin Amre, who quit earlier this year after Mumbai lost the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy quarter-finals to eventual winners Rajasthan. During Amre’s five-year stint as coach, Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy three times.The CIC also named former Mumbai captain Milind Rege as the chief selector, with Abdul Ismail, Abey Kuruvilla and Pradeep Kasliwal as part of the selection panel. The Under-19 team will be coached by Satish Samant, with Ravi Thakkar as chief selector.

England’s captain, Graeme Swann, admitted that a “bit of pressure, a bit of inexperience and a bit of ineptitude all added up to a horror show”, as an entirely unfancied West Indian team rallied round in defence of a below-par target of 114, and pulled off an impressive 25-run victory thanks to a Man-of-the-Match spell of 3 for 9 in four overs from the debutant left-arm spinner, Garey Mathurin.Needing less than a run-a-ball from the outset, and with the memory of their ten-wicket cruise in the first Twenty20 on Friday night, England began their run-chase fully expecting to seal a 2-0 series win and conclude their international summer on another upbeat note. But Mathurin’s nerveless spell, in his very first appearance in any form of cricket in England, choked their ambition from the Powerplay onwards, and left the lower-order with too much momentum to claw back.”God works in mysterious ways,” said Mathurin, a childhood friend of the captain, and fellow St Lucian, Darren Sammy. “Everybody has their turn and it’s just that my turn came at the age of 28. The English people hadn’t seen me before so I knew I could go out and get the job done. We have a good team unity going on and the cohesiveness just worked.”The result left Swann feeling a touch humbled at the end of what has been a remarkable season for England, but even after being bowled out for 88, he felt that his side had been “exceptional” in the first half of the contest, and believed they would probably learn more from this setback than could ever have been learnt in victory.”For half the game we were exceptional and we put ourselves in a position where we should never ever lose a game of cricket,” said Swann. “Let’s face it, to not chase 113 in international cricket is unacceptable. West Indies bowled and fielded well, but not well enough to bowl a team out for 88. It was good fielding mixed with a bit of panic, and four run-outs is crazy chasing such a small total on such a big field.”After a short end-of-season break, England head off to the subcontinent next week to embark on a five-ODI tour of India, where their failure to deal with a turning surface will doubtless impact on the type of wickets they can expect to face when they arrive. Further down the line, England will be defending their World Twenty20 crown on the spin-friendly surfaces of Sri Lanka next year, and on this evidence, they need to work on their manipulation of the field as much as their boundary-clearing ability.”For all the positives of Friday night, there were quite a few negatives that need to be ironed out of our game before we play on pretty similar tracks over the next 12 months,” said Swann. “We are going to face spin in the first six overs again, and if we can take one good thing out of the way we batted, it’s that it’s completely unacceptable, and won’t be allowed to happen again.”It’s a harsh environment in international cricket and you find out a few things about people when they are under the pump,” he added. “Today, one or two guys didn’t respond that well, but I’m sure, knowing this team as I do and the way they have trained, it’s a mere blip. I wouldn’t write off any of this XI who have played tonight, or indeed any of the 14 in the squad, because they are all superb cricketers.”In England’s defence, their side was missing several of its most experienced campaigners, not least Eoin Morgan, whose deft use of the angles would have been ideal for keeping the run-rate moving. But Swann believed the chosen team should still have performed much, much better. “I’d love to find an excuse for them and say they’re inexperienced, but they’re not inexperienced in Twenty20 cricket,” he said. “I’m not just blaming the top six, I’m blaming the 11 players with the bat because we were pretty appalling.”The left-arm spinner, you can’t argue with 3 for 9, but the three guys who got out to him will probably look at the shots they played and be pretty horrified,” he added. “We allowed him to get exceptional figures and he did catch us on the hop. But I’d hope each batsman who got out will look at it and think ‘I won’t do that again’. We were still in the game at six-seven down at a run-a-ball, but of the wickets that fell, very few were caused by the ball deviating. It was poor shots and poor execution of those shots.”For Mathurin and his team-mates, however, the result was the ideal tonic for their defeat on Friday night, and went a long way towards answering their many critics – in the Caribbean and worldwide. “Yeah, we had a point to prove,” said Mathurin. “England played really, really well on Friday, so we were playing for some pride, and then we were coming back hard at them. We knew we could do it. Hopefully this shows everyone the energy and enthusiasm we have got, and hopefully everyone sees what we can do.”

Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has said his team allowed India spinners to gain the upper hand in Delhi and should look to attack more in the second Test.”We let them [the spinners] dictate too much to us and it took the experience of [Shivnarine] Chanderpaul to show us how to play on that pitch,” he told . “We hope to take a page out of his [Chanderpaul’s] book.”When you are positive against spin, it is effective. The team should look to do that more often and be cautious and not go into the shell. We will look to counterattack, but also be more selective because it is Test cricket. We have to be prepared to bat for long periods.”West Indies lost all but four of their 20 wickets to the spin of R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha in the first Test. They appeared to hold the edge after bowling India out for 209 to take a 95-run first-innings’ lead on the slow pitch. However, they folded for 180 in their second innings to allow India back into the match. India then chased down 276 with five wickets to spare.Sammy said West Indies need to exploit any advantage they might gain in Kolkata. “It is about capitalising on key moments,” he said. “Hopefully, we can do it in this Test and bounce back. وكان مرتضى منصور قد هاجم الجارحي وخالد مرتجي أمين صندوق النادي الأهلي ووالده، أمس السبت.

وقال الجارحي عبر حسابه على موقع التواصل الاجتماعي “فيس بوك”: “بخصوص رسائلكم عن هجوم سليط اللسان على شخصي وخالد مرتجي”.

وأكمل: “ألا يرى وزير الشباب والرياضة ورئيس المجلس الأعلى للإعلام أن تجاوزاته أصبحت مسيئة لسمعة مصر في الخارج وأمام العالم، في الوقت الذي يكون الأهلي فيه سفيرًا لمصر ويرفع اسمها عاليًا في المحافل الدولية؟”.

واستكمل: “ما أسهل البذاءة والتجاوز في حق الغير، ولكننا أبدًا لا نتدنى إلى مستواك وأسلوبك، ودائمًا نرد بالعمل والنجاح”.

وأضاف: “حققنا السوبر المصري، ونتصدر بطولة الدوري، ووصلنا إلى نهائي كأس مصر والآن في نصف نهائي كأس العالم للأندية، ونواصل تشريف مصر والكرة المصرية للسنة الثالثة على التوالي في كأس العالم للأندية”.

مرتضى منصور كان قد اتهم أحمد فتوح وعبد الله جمعة ثنائي فريق الزمالك بتعاطي مخدر الحشيش.

وتابع: “نحترم ونتحمل مسئوليتنا تجاه النشء والجيل الذي يشاهدنا ويشجع الأهلي ونقدم له القدوة والمثل، كما أننا تصدقنا بجزء من عرضنا ضريبة للعمل العام من أجل النادي الأهلي وبلدنا”.

تمكن فلامينجو البرازيلي من تحقيق الميدالية البرونزية في كأس العالم للأندية، بالفوز بنتيجة 4-2 أمام الأهلي المصري، في مباراة تحديد المركزين الثالث والرابع.

O empate em 1 a 1 entre Chapecoense e Bahia não foi o melhor resultado para as equipes, que continuam em uma situação complicada no Campeonato Brasileiro, mas foi motivo de comemoração para os atletas, que não disputavam jogos oficiais desde o dia 13 de junho, quando iniciou o período de pausa por conta da Copa do Mundo.

Dentre os jogadores que avaliaram positivamente o resultado está o meia-atacante Osman, que ficou três meses fora de campo devido a uma lesão acometida durante o Campeonato Catarinense. Escalado como titular, o camisa 77 foi o autor do gol que garantiu o empate à Chapecoense.
