Newcastle urged to re-sign Van Aanholt

Patrick van Aanholt is one of the ‘gems’ available to Newcastle United on a free transfer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds United and Middlesbrough forward was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Van Aanholt has reached the end of his Crystal Palace contract and was included on the club’s official released list.

The 30-year-old has racked up more than 200 Premier League appearances, scoring 21 goals and assisting 15.

He’s previously spent a month on loan at St James’ Park back in 2010 after an injury to Jose Enrique.

The former Sunderland man is currently on Euro 2020 duty with The Netherlands, and has started both of their Group C matches.

He helped them become the first team to book their place in the knockout stages as group winners.

The latest

With Football Insider claiming Newcastle as little £8million-£10million available to spend this summer, Whelan says they need to be ‘clever’.

And he believes offering a two-year deal to the Dutchman would represent very shrewd business.

“Look at Van Aanholt,” he said. “I’m sure he could do a job at Newcastle. He’s someone who can add that quality and experience.

“Newcastle have to be clever in the transfer market and look at players who are out of contract.

“Maybe a two-year contract for some players. Van Aanholt would be one for me. They have to look at him.

“There are gems out there if you look for them.”

The verdict

Van Aanholt can be supremely effective going forward, but there are real question marks over him defensively.

£15million signing Jamal Lewis endured a somewhat tricky first season on Tyneside, leaving Newcastle with a dilemma in that position.

They won’t be confident in Lewis as a first-choice left-back, but equally bringing Van Aanholt in for a couple of years may stall the youngster’s development even further.

An initial one-year deal, if the Dutchman accepts it, may be best.

Everton fans on Romero transfer update

Many Everton fans have been left to buzz following a transfer update from the Daily Mail on Sergio Romero.

The report has since been shared by @EvertonNewsFeed on their Twitter page, and has gained a lot of reaction from the Goodison Park faithful.

As per the news outlet, both the Merseyside club and Juventus are interested in signing the Manchester United goalkeeper, who is keen to leave he Red Devils.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team will let the Argentinian leave on a free transfer, which presents a bargain opportunity for the Toffees. With Robin Olsen currently heading back to AS Roma after his loan spell with Carlo Ancelotti’s side ends, the Blues need another ‘keeper to challenge Jordan Pickford.Given his past experience of playing in the Premier League and the fact that he is available for free, Romero would be an ideal signing, as funds can still be made available to be spent in other positions. Spurs may have been handed manager boost

Writing for football.london, journalist Rob Guest has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of a new manager after a big development.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager chase…

The Athletic reported last week that Spurs have been in talks with former Lilywhites managerial favourite Mauricio Pochettino and it is also believed that he is keen on a return to north London.

Far more recently, reports have emerged of Antonio Conte and how he may have leapfrogged the Argentine to become a frontrunner – with talks for him now ongoing (Dan Kilpatrick).

Conte appears to be emerging as a new favourite for the role, especially given his free agent status.

While Pochettino hasn’t totally been ruled out yet, Daniel Levy will have to go to war with Ligue 1 giants PSG if they aim to appoint him this summer and the Italian may just be the easier option.

The Latest: Journalist drops claim on possible boost…

Dropping a claim for football.london, reporter Guest believes Spurs may have been boosted in their manager pursuit by the big development of Carlo Ancelotti joining Real Madrid from Everton.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, this is because Spurs targets Conte and Pochettino were linked as candidates for the Galacticos job and the 13-time European Champions arguably came as stiff competitors for Spurs.

Guest, as a result, explained that Tottenham ‘appear to have been handed a huge boost’ in their search for a new manager.

The Verdict: Correct…

While PSG remain a heavy obstacle in the way of Spurs and Pochettino, the Lilywhites can still be encouraged by a new lack of outside competition when it comes to interested parties.

Madrid’s appointment of Ancelotti, now confirmed, means Tottenham must now be clear favourites to appoint either Pochettino, or most likely, Conte after recent developments.

Indeed, Spurs may well have been boosted in pursuit of their next manager with Real now out of the way.

Wolves fans want Ait-Nouri transfer

Many Wolves fans have been left to flock to a post from Tim Spiers on Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The Athletic journalist tweeted some comments that were made by Nuno Espirito Santo on the 19-year-old in his pre-game press conference before their match away at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon:

“The talent offensively is there, youth, but the Premier League is very demanding and you need to improve your one-on-one defensive. He’s doing well but has a lot of things to improve to become the player we see.”

Ait-Nouri is only on loan at Molineux for the 2020/21 term, but Nuno’s comments do not seem to suggest that the Midlands club will be jumping at the gun to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

The left-back has ranked highly among his teammates in terms of tackles (1.4), key passes (0.7), dribbles (1.1), pass success (86.7%) and crosses (0.6) per game in the top flight so far in the 2020/21 term (Whoscored), suggesting that they should be looking to sign him permanently if the opportunity arises.

MCFC fans react to Kane comments

Manchester City fans have been reacting to comments from Harry Kane, who has said playing with Kevin De Bruyne would be a “striker’s dream”.

Kane recently dropped a bombshell when he revealed to Tottenham that he wishes to leave the club during the summer (Sky Sports). He has been terrific for Spurs, scoring 220 goals in 335 games for the north London outfit (Transfermarkt), but he is yet to win a single trophy during that time.

As such, a number of clubs have been linked with a move for the England captain, including Manchester City (The Guardian). Now, in a recent interview, he has praised the abilities of De Bruyne, calling him a “special, special player” while also suggesting he would like to play with the midfielder.

The comments were shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and they attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the quotes.

West Ham fans slam Craig Dawson

During West Ham United’s encounter with Newcastle United this afternoon, plenty of Hammers supporters were less than impressed with the performance of defender Craig Dawson – with the Englishman sent off following a string of bad challenges.

Dawson, who is set to join the Irons on a permanent basis from Watford this summer, endured a torrid afternoon at St. James’ Park as the 30-year-old struggled to keep some composure.

According to SofaScore, Dawson attempted just one ground duel, made an error leading to a goal and accumulated a meagre 5.2 match rating over the 36 minutes he played before being given his marching orders.

For his first booking, the centre-back took out Joelinton and received an early caution – with another poor challenge then leading to an opening goal for Newcastle and his second card of the afternoon (football.london).

As a result, it’s safe to say many Irons supporters were not impressed with his performance at St. James’ Park.

Walcott was awful in Saints loss vs Spurs

Southampton slipped to a late defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening to continue their awful run of form in the Premier League so far this year.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side produced a promising first-half display which saw them take a 1-0 lead into half-time thanks to Danny Ings’ header from James Ward-Prowse’s corner.

However, all the good work from the first 45 came undone at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Gareth Bale equalised shortly after the hour mark, before Heung-Min Son’s late penalty sealed the win for Ryan Mason’s side.

Although there were several poor performances on show once again from the Saints, one man who particularly disappointed was Theo Walcott.

As per SofaScore, the former Arsenal man would earn a poor 6.4/10 rating on his return to North London, which was the worst of any outfield Southampton player who started the game.

During his 67 minutes on the pitch, the 32-year-old winger would have just 26 touches of the ball and would manage to complete just 10/17 of his passes, resulting in a shocking 59% pass accuracy rate – which was again the worst of any Southampton player.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/southampton-saints-ralph-hasenhuttl-martin-semmens-st-marys” title=”Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more”]

Considering the on-loan Everton man has averaged 20.1 passes per game and a 74.5% pass accuracy in the Premier League so far this season, it was clear that he was way below par on Wednesday evening.

Walcott also failed to register a single shot on target, successful dribble or key pass against Spurs, which emphasises just how little he was able to contribute on the rare occasions that he had the ball.

Whilst a lot of Southampton fans will be looking to blame Moussa Djenepo for his poorly-timed tackle which gifted Spurs their late penalty, the Mali international would play just one less pass than Walcott and would complete two more dribbles, despite only being on the pitch for around 23 minutes.

Therefore, Southampton fans should forget about blaming Djenepo for the defeat and instead lament Walcott for another anonymous display.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Howe twist

Celtic are reportedly concerned that Crystal Palace could scupper their bid to bring Eddie Howe to Glasgow with a move of their own.

As to be expected, the latest twist has had plenty of Eagles fans talking on social media.

According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, a Hoops source admitted the Scottish club are concerned that Palace could ambush a move, which has reportedly been verbally agreed.

The south Londoners are thought to be in the market for a new manager, with Roy Hodgson’s deal expiring over the coming months.

Burnley’s Sean Dyche is another man who has been linked with a move to Selhurst Park, and the Eagles have reportedly made contact with the Clarets boss.

However, it seems as if Howe is another man on the club’s radar, but it appears as if they face a race against time should they wish to snatch the former Bournemouth boss from Celtic’s grasp.

Liverpool fans slam Jota

As Liverpool bow out of the Champions League following a 0-0 draw at home to Real Madrid at Anfield, many Reds supporters weren’t impressed with the performance of Diogo Jota after he was brought on with half an hour remaining.

Jota wasn’t selected to start against the Galacticos on Merseyside despite his fine recent run of three goals in his last three Premier League outings (Transfermarkt), but he still failed to make the desired impact after replacing Ozan Kabak on the hour mark.

Liverpool spurned glorious first half chances to spark some sort of fight back after losing the first leg 3-1 and Jota was introduced by manager Jurgen Klopp to help turn the tide.

Alas, Jota instead lost possession 13 times whilst winning just 2/7 ground duels against Real – all while completing just one third of his dribble attempts on the night (SofaScore).

He was also one of the lowest rated Reds stars with a SofaScore ranking of 6.5, below the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah, perhaps highlighting why supporters weren’t impressed with his cameo.

Some fans even called his display ‘atrocious’ and ‘shocking’ – find all of their verdicts down below.

Claim dropped amid NUFC takeover case

An arbitrator has dropped an inside claim on Michael Beloff amid the pending takeover court case between Newcastle United and the Premier League.

Beloff is in line to chair the three-man arbitration panel that will attempt to sort out the ongoing legal disputes between the two parties over the failed takeover of the St. James’ Park faithful by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

Jeffrey Benz, who is an arbitrator and has sat on a number of different CAS arbitration panels with Beloff, has since dropped some interesting insight to The Chronicle on what can be expected of him:

“In cases, Michael comes to a conclusion pretty quickly. He will consider all the evidence before reaching that conclusion and he is not afraid of sharing his views with his fellow arbitrators.

“At the same time, if people disagree with him, he will listen and has been known to be persuaded and change his position. He has copious experience running successful arbitration proceedings.”

Newcastle takeover hope?

Despite the best efforts of the North East club in trying to remove Beloff from the panel due to suspected bias, what can be gathered from Benz’s comments is that the case may not be prolonged but also that he is very careful when it comes to his final decision.

The Tyneside club will want a decision as quick as possible so that it can give them enough time to prepare for what may or may not be a takeover at the Magpies.

However, they will also want that decision to be the right one and will of course hope that Beloff and his panel rule in their favour come the end of the hearing.

Nonetheless, it is interesting to hear how he goes about his business and certainly a positive that those fears of bias may have been quashed.
