West Ham ‘source’ shares huge Jarrod Bowen update

A West Ham United ‘source’ has now shared some huge contract news out of Rush Green involving star winger Jarrod Bowen.

The Lowdown: Moyes eyeing new deals…

Aiming to maintain his team’s status as a Premier League force, Irons manager David Moyes is looking to tie down some of his key players, with the club tipped to table multiple new contract offers.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Declan Rice has apparently been offered a mega eight-year deal, according to talkSPORT, but there is currently no indication that he will put pen to paper.

Midfielder Tomas Soucek is another man at the London Stadium who has been at the centre of possible fresh terms, but talks have reportedly stalled and there is currently no confirmed update so far.

Now, as per Football Insider’s inside ‘source’, club owners GSB are seemingly eyeing another major in-house agreement.

The Latest: GSB eyeing major in-house agreement…

It is now believed that West Ham are set to offer Bowen a ‘huge’ new deal to fend off interested suitors this summer and are ‘planning to open talks’ with the player ‘within weeks’.

The source explained that Moyes’ star attacker is in line for a bumper pay rise as the Hammers seek to back their manager both in the transfer market and by keeping hold of their most crucial assets.

The Verdict: No-brainer…

Bowen has been nothing short of a revelation in east London over 2021/22, becoming one of their most potent attacking threats and enjoying no shortage of fine moments.

He finished West Ham’s memorable run to the Europa League semi-finals as their joint-top scorer in the competition with three goals, whilst also registering one assist and taking the joint-most shots at goal per 90 (WhoScored)

A pivotal player both domestically and in Europe, the 25-year-old has come on leaps and bounds since the start of this season, and we believe that securing him to a new deal is a no-brainer.

However, much like Rice, it will all depend on whether Bowen actually agrees to put pen to paper.

Liverpool: L’Equipe drops Mbappe claim

Reputable French newspaper L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) has provided a fresh update regarding Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

The lowdown: Not the first time…

The Reds seemingly have a long-standing admiration for the superstar attacker and it has previously been suggested that Jurgen Klopp has a ‘direct line’ to Mbappe following talks.

Having fuelled the fire when describing Klopp’s side as a ‘machine’ in 2020, the 23-year-old continues to be indexed to a move to Merseyside as his contract in the French capital dwindles.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-32/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Set to become a free agent end of the season (Transfermarkt), despite recent reports suggesting a new deal in Paris was on the cards, it appears that Real Madrid and indeed Liverpool could still be in the picture…

The latest: L’Equipe provide an exciting update

As per L’Equipe, translated by SW, Liverpool have ‘entered the dance’ to sign Mbappe once more.

The report cites the Reds as a ‘third club’ with a possibility of signing the 54-cap World Cup winner alongside Real Madrid and an extended stay at PSG.

This comes as the Anfield club prepares for a pivotal summer regarding their own contract renewals with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all in the final 14 months of their deals.

The verdict: Dream transfer

Already one of the most decorated footballers in the world at present, the gifted striker truly is a generational talent and has provided an astonishing 58 direct goal contributions (35 goals, 23 assists) in 43 appearances across all competitions this season.

Whilst the prospect of adding a player of the £144million valued Frenchman’s quality to Klopp’s squad is an enticing one, particularly in light of Erling Haaland’s imminent move to Manchester City, given the likely finances involved it seems to be out of the realms of possibility.

Albeit without the eye-watering cost of a transfer fee involved, Mbappe’s reported £327,000 per week wage demands may sit outside of the Anfield hierarchy’s existing model.

Should one of Mane, Salah or Firmino leave this summer, suddenly a move for the lightning-fast phenomenon – who was lauded as ‘unstoppable’ by Carlo Ancelotti – becomes a more realistic proposition and one that everyone associated with Liverpool would no doubt welcome with open arms.

Storey submits Sunderland takeover offer

Sunderland now face a big dilemma as a consortium fronted by William Storey has reportedly now submitted a £42m offer to buy the Wearside club.

The Lowdown: Storey tries again

Storey tried to buy the Stadium of Light faithful back in 2020, but failed in his bid, which leaves Kyril Louis-Dreyfus as the majority shareholder with a 41% stake.

Stewart Donald retains a 34% share, while Juan Sartori holds 20% and Charlie Methven the remaining 5% (The Daily Mail).Nonetheless, it now looks as if Storey is going to try his luck once more, and you’d have to say his timing is impeccably inconvenient given the importance of Friday’s play-off first leg against Sheffield Wednesday. The Latest: Offer madeAs per The Daily Mail, Storey and his consortium are now proposing to take up 100% of the shares, and are ‘keen’ to push through the deal if Alex Neil’s team do not win promotion up to the Championship. They welcome the Owls to Wearside in the first leg of the semi-final tonight, and sources close to the bid insist that there is ‘interest’ from some of the current owners to accept the offer, although there is none from majority shareholder Louis-Dreyfus.The Verdict: Accept it?After the confusion over the details of the ownership structure that came to light back in February, which left supporters feeling misled, now is the time to allow Storey and his consortium to own 100% of the shares, so long as they are committed to the club.It seems as if some of the owners are not at the moment, given the hectic nature of the shares split, and so their takes need to be sold to help the Black Cats move forward in unison.Nonetheless, it looks like Louis-Dreyfus is the one that needs persuading to hand over to Storey, in what is a big dilemma for both him and the club.In other news, find out which injured SAFC star could now make the Wednesday game here!

Liverpool can sign Gerrard 2.0 in Gallagher

Conor Gallagher’s efforts for Crystal Palace this season have been enough to convince a pundit that he would be an ideal signing for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

What’s the word?

That pundit is none other than talkSPORT’s Charlie Austin who stated: “I think for any football team would love to have Conor Gallagher.

“He’s so energetic, you look at him the way he plays, I think a lot of football fans see him play and would think ‘I would like him to be at my club.’

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

“I said he would be, not a replacement, not saying this for Jordan Henderson.

“But when Jordan moves on, or retires, or comes into a new football role, he [Gallagher] would be great for Liverpool.”

Ideal fit

Conor Gallagher’s future is uncertain. Though, what is certain is his impact at Crystal Palace this season.

With eight goals and three assists in 29 Premier League appearances for Vieira’s side, he has attracted the attention of the entire league.

It remains unclear as to whether we will see Gallagher return to parent club Chelsea or remain at Selhurst Park next term, though what we do know is that Austin has a point. Gallagher would be an ideal fit in this current Liverpool regime under Klopp.

Whilst Gallagher, who has been described as “outrageous” by Palace podcaster Dan Cook, has proven himself as a quality attacking option from midfield, with his box-to-box approach making him a sure-fire success in Klopp’s high-tempo set-up.

Though, it’s his average of 26 pressures per 90 that would make him a viable option at Anfield, with his number of pressures throughout the attacking and midfield third exceptional.

His goal-creating actions average of 0.40 underlines his attacking threat, whilst his average of four progressive passes received per game demonstrates his comfortability in taking up progressive positions in the opponent’s final third.

With his versatility and ability to perform in both the attacking and defensive aspects of the game, Gallagher could offer Liverpool their closest resemblance to living legend Steven Gerrard, in what would surely be a great move for all involved.

Gerrard was famed for scoring goals from midfield, and that’s precisely what the Eagles loanee could bring to Anfield too, with his infectious personality serving as another resemblance of the Liverpool hero.

The £50m-valued gem could shine under Klopp, and could genuinely become a world-class player at Anfield. The Reds’ system and regime on and off the ball conforms to Gallagher’s style as a midfielder.

£45m star who plays a “bit like Henry” could end Gyokeres’ Arsenal career

Arsenal got back on track in the best way possible on Wednesday night: dismantling Club Brugge 3-0.

Sure, there were moments in which the Belgian side looked dangerous, but in the end, it was a commanding performance from Mikel Arteta’s side, and one that saw them maintain their 100% record in the Champions League.

Moreover, there were some brilliant performances from players who needed to step up, such as Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli.

However, one starter who didn’t and is now in real danger of slipping further down the pecking order at Arsenal is Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres' season so far

There was quite a bit of excitement among the fan base when Arsenal finally signed Gyokeres in the summer, in part because of the saga surrounding the move, but mostly because of his unreal record in Portugal.

After all, in just two seasons, the Swedish “powerhouse,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, racked up a tally of 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 appearances, totalling 8417 minutes.

That comes out to a simply staggering average of 1.22 goal involvements every game, or one every 67.33 minutes, so to say that there was a level of expectation coming into this season would be fair.

Unfortunately, so far anyway, the Stockholm-born international has not really lived up to it.

Now, he’s certainly not been terrible, unlike some other Swedish strikers who moved this year, but his return of six goals in 18 appearances is some way off the numbers fans were hoping he’d put up.

Moreover, while some of the blame has to fall on his teammates for not creating enough clear-cut chances, the 27-year-old still has to get into dangerous positions more often and hold up the ball better.

The game on Wednesday night was one of his worst performances in this regard, as he offered practically nothing on or off the ball, taking just 12 touches and completing only five passes.

With all that said, there is still time for the previously prolific striker to come good. Still, he’s going to have to start improving quickly, as there is now another player in the squad who could leapfrog him in the pecking order, someone who has been compared to Thierry Henry in the past.

Arsenal star is bad news for Gyokeres' Emirates career

The unfortunate situation for Gyokeres is that, injuries permitting, he has some serious rivals for that starting striker spot.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

There is, of course, Kai Havertz, who chalked up 15 goals before his season was ended by injury last year and then the man who has been scoring in for fun in 2025, Mikel Merino.

However, Wednesday night heralded the return of a third rival, someone plenty of fans had essentially written off in the summer: £45m man Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian made his return to first-team action 322 days after suffering an ACL injury, and while he didn’t score against Club Brugge, he looked lively.

In fact, in his 30-odd minutes of action, the former Manchester City ace looked far more threatening than Gyokeres did, taking two shots on target and another that hit the woodwork.

Moreover, he took eight more touches than the Swede, played a key pass, completed 14 passes and helped to link up the play in a way that made the team look far more fluid.

Now, he did play against a tired defence, and it’s probably too early to say he should be in from the start in the next game, but the 28-year-old is now a serious contender for that role, as when he’s fit, he’s a threat.

For example, in his 97 appearances for the North Londoners, he has scored 26 goals and provided 20 assists, which comes out to a pretty impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.10 games.

Furthermore, even though he doesn’t have the physicality of the former Sporting star, he is far more graceful on the ball and, in the words of Ray Parlour, “drifts out to the left quite often, a little like Thierry Henry used to.”

Ultimately, there is still a lot of the season to go, but based on what fans have seen so far, there is a real possibility that, so long as he stays fit, Jesus could surpass Gyokeres in the pecking order and even end his Arsenal career.

He's on borrowed time: £31m Man City star must now regret signing for Pep

Manchester City’s summer was defined by both change and ambition.

After a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, finishing third and ending the season without a trophy for the first time since Pep Guardiola’s debut year, the club knew reinforcements were needed.

Out went long-serving figures such as Kevin De Bruyne, İlkay Gündoğan and Kyle Walker, taking with them a wealth of experience and winning mentality.

In came Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Aït-Nouri to refresh the outfield ranks.

But the most intriguing business arrived between the posts.

Ederson, who had been at City since 2017 and redefined the modern goalkeeper with his ball-playing ability, departed on deadline day for Fenerbahçe.

In his place came not one but two new stoppers – James Trafford, a record-breaking signing from Burnley, and Gianluigi Donnarumma, Italy’s captain and widely regarded as the world’s best goalkeeper.

City’s reshaped squad has shown flashes of potential, most recently in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brentford courtesy of Erling Haaland’s ninth goal of the season.

But while Guardiola’s side currently sit fifth, much of the conversation has centred on how the goalkeeping department will evolve.

Why Donnarumma is Man City's best signing for years

The deadline day signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma raised eyebrows across Europe.

City spent £26m to lure the 26-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain, where he had amassed 161 appearances, kept 56 clean sheets, and crucially played a starring role in delivering the club’s first Champions League triumph.

With 76 caps for Italy and the captain’s armband at international level, Donnarumma arrived with pedigree few can match.

His performances for PSG last season – including several man-of-the-match displays in Europe – reaffirmed his reputation as the finest shot-stopper in the world.

Standing at 1.96m, he commands his area with authority, particularly in aerial situations, and is renowned for producing big saves under pressure.

However, what makes this move fascinating is how it fits into Guardiola’s philosophy. For years, the Catalan has prioritised goalkeepers who excel with the ball at their feet.

It was that desire which saw Joe Hart replaced by Claudio Bravo in 2016, and later justified the faith placed in Ederson, who delivered not only saves but four assists last season through his pinpoint distribution.

Donnarumma, by contrast, is less accomplished with the ball. His strength lies in traditional goalkeeping qualities – reflexes, reach and shot-stopping.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

This suggests either a tactical evolution for Guardiola or a pragmatic response to City’s first trophyless season in seven years.

Having witnessed Liverpool lift the title in 2025, Guardiola may have decided solidity and reliability outweigh artistry for the moment.

So far, Donnarumma has featured six times for City this season, keeping three clean sheets and producing a stunning derby save against Manchester United.

All of that has helped to ensure that another of City’s summer signings has already become rather redundant.

Man City star on borrowed time after Donnarumma signing

For James Trafford, the summer promised a fairytale return.

A boyhood City supporter, the 22-year-old rejoined the club from Burnley in a deal worth up to £31m – making him the most expensive British goalkeeper in history.

It was a transfer designed to signal the beginning of a new era, with Trafford earmarked as the long-term heir to Ederson.

His rise had been meteoric. Last season, he was a cornerstone of Burnley’s record-breaking Championship campaign, playing 45 games, keeping 30 clean sheets and conceding just 15 goals.

Such a run of form deservedly saw him named among the PFA Championship team of the Season.

His remarkable consistency included a run of 12 consecutive shutouts and 910 minutes without conceding – feats that attracted serious interest from Newcastle before City swooped in.

Since returning, Trafford has been given opportunities, playing three times already this season.

While he impressed against Brighton despite a 2-1 defeat, he also endured difficult moments, most notably a costly error against Tottenham when his misplaced pass led to João Palhinha’s goal.

With Donnarumma arriving weeks later, the writing may already be on the wall.

The statistics tell a curious story. Trafford boasts a save percentage of 84.5% compared to Donnarumma’s 67.6%, concedes fewer goals per 90 (0.36 versus 1.08), and completes more passes at greater progressive distances.

By those metrics, Trafford arguably looks the more Guardiola-esque option.

Yet the Italian has the experience and reputation that will inevitably command the manager’s trust in key fixtures.

At just 22, Trafford’s potential remains enormous, but his pathway to becoming City’s long-term No.1 may already be blocked.

Should Donnarumma cement his place, Trafford could soon be faced with a difficult decision – whether to bide his time and develop at City or seek opportunities elsewhere to avoid stagnation. As GOAL put it, the stopper is likely to be “regretting his life choices” now.

Either way, City fans can take solace in having two highly talented goalkeepers on their books. But in the high-stakes world of Guardiola’s City, only one will truly be trusted to lead them back to the summit.

A better return than Bilic: PL manager now being "discussed" at West Ham

Something has to give at West Ham United, and soon.

The Hammers have had a truly dreadful start to the campaign so far, losing four of five Premier League games and being knocked out of the League Cup by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It’s not just the fact that they’ve lost so many games, but the manner in which they’ve lost them. So far, they’ve scored just five goals and conceded 13 in the league.

WestHamUnited manager GrahamPotter and Bruno react during the match

So, it’s hardly a surprise to see the club linked with a host of potential replacements for Graham Potter, including one manager who’d surely have a better return to the club than Slaven Bilic.

West Ham's ongoing manager search

With just how terribly things are going at the moment, it should come as no surprise that a swathe of managers have been linked with a move to West Ham this month.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

One such manager who probably wouldn’t get the fans all that excited is Frank Lampard, as while he saved Everton from the drop a few years ago, he is currently doing an okay job with Coventry City in the Championship.

Likewise, while it would be interesting to see how Bilic would fare back at the London Stadium, the links to him are hardly inspiring.

Fortunately, the Hammers are now supposedly interested in bringing someone else back to the club, someone who’d likely do a better job than the Croatian.

At least that’s according to a recent report from Claret & Hugh, which claims Scott Parker is of interest to West Ham.

In fact, the report goes further, revealing that the Englishman “has been discussed” by those inside the club.

In all, while it might not be the appointment some would want, we do think the former West Ham player would have a better return to the club than Bilic would.

Why Parker would have a better return than Bilic

So when we say ‘return’, we mean simply coming back to the club, as unlike Bilic, Parker’s last involvement with West Ham was as a player, not a coach.

With that out of the way, there are a few reasons why the Englishman would have a more successful stint back at the club than the Croatian.

The first, and most important, of which is all down to their recent jobs.

In the case of the former PFA Player of the Year, he is currently in charge of Burnley and guided them to the Premier League last season.

Before that, he managed Club Brugge for a short stint, which was preceded by a year with Bournemouth, during which he got them promoted.

Finally, his first foray into management saw him spend over two years in charge of Fulham, whom he also led to promotion.

In other words, the former midfielder has extensive recent experience in English football, both in the top flight and the second tier.

On the other hand, the former Hammers’ boss has not managed a top-flight team for almost five years.

Instead, his last job saw him take charge of Saudi Pro-League side Al-Fateh from July 2023 to August 2024.

Before that, he took charge of Watford for under a year before being fired, which was preceded by a year-long stint with Chinese outfit Beijing Guoan.

In fact, the last time he managed in the Premier League was back in December 2020, when West Bromwich Albion fired him.

Ultimately, while Bilic might do a good job, he hasn’t had a successful stint with a club for some time. In contrast, Parker made Burnley unplayable last season, and they are continuing to play well this year.

Therefore, it seems like the Englishman would be a far better hire for the Hammers at this point in time.

Chelsea open discussions over signing £86m Club World Cup sensation

Chelsea chiefs are carrying on with their ambitious transfer plans off-the-field, amid their Club World Cup campaign, with Enzo Maresca’s side now holding conversations over signing a marquee sensation who’s starring at the tournament right now.

Liam Delap also made his debut for Chelsea and notched his first assist for the club just minutes after coming off Maresca’s bench, setting up Fernandez with an excellent cross from the right-hand side for the Argentine to tap home from close range.

When it comes to how invested supporters are in the Club World Cup, that is highly debatable to say the least, considering Chelsea beat LAFC in front of a largely barren crowd in Georgia.

However, Stamford Bridge chiefs are believed to be taking the tournament very seriously indeed, with £97 million worth of prize money on offer to the victors. This hefty financial windfall would seriously boost Chelsea when it comes to avoiding the dreaded swinging axe of PSR regulations, and could allow them to invest in their summer recruitment drive with even more gusto.

Chelsea are reportedly prioritising a new winger for Maresca right now (The Guardian), with Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens at the very top of their wishlist after they saw three bids rejected before the CWC transfer deadline.

The Englishman isn’t their only wide target, though, with Man United’s Alejandro Garnacho still on Chelsea’s radar as well.

Chelsea hold discussions with Juventus over signing Kenan Yildiz

According to website Juve FC, Serie A starlet Kenan Yildiz is another transfer possibility for Maresca’s side, following his excellent 2024/2025 campaign.

Juventus' KenanYildizcelebrates

The Turkey international finished 2024/2025 as Juventus’ best-performer by average match rating in the Italian top flight (WhoScored), racking up a total of 10 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances across all competitions so far.

Yildiz is continuing his fine year in the CWC. He got on the Old Lady’s scoresheet and put in an impressive display as Juventus rounded off a routine 5-0 victory over Al Ain in their first group game, with the 20-year-old’s fine displays attracting attention from west London.

Chelsea are now said to have opened “discussions” with Juve over Yildiz, who value the Turk at around £86 million.

While offers below this benchmark would be considered, Igor Tudor’s side are giving no consideration to selling as things stand, and there’s no indication that the player would push for this move either, despite contact being made with his close circle.

Juve are also planning to agree an extension with Yildiz that could tie him down in Turin until 2031, so Chelsea could have their work cut out for them here.

Alongside Pedro: Howe readying move to sign £16m-a-year star for Newcastle

With their summer business officially underway courtesy of Antonio Cordero, Newcastle United and Eddie Howe are now reportedly ready to make their first approach to sign a big-money Premier League winner.

Newcastle confirm Antonio Cordero arrival

Starting as they mean to go on, Newcastle confirmed Cordero’s arrival from Malaga last week. The young Spaniard is set to officially arrive on 1 July when his current contract expires and he becomes free to complete his move to Tyneside.

After putting pen to paper, the young winger told the club website: “It’s truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure. I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it. It’s a big step, and that’s one of the reasons I’m here. I’m happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already.”

Meanwhile, in what is likely to be one of his final acts as sporting director, Paul Mitchell welcomed Cordero to the club, saying: “Antonio is an exciting talent. We’re delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe. He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences.”

Following an impressive start to the summer, it seems as though the Magpies are only just getting started. Recent reports have indicated that they’ve already made an enquiry to sign Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga and Brighton’s Joao Pedro as they look to make up for missing out on Bryan Mbeumo.

Sweden's AnthonyElangacelebrates scoring their fifth goal with Alexander Isak

Attacking reinforcements seem to be top of their wishlist too, with Howe now reportedly ready to make his first approach to sign a Premier League winner this summer.

Howe and Newcastle ready to make Grealish approach

According to The Sun, Howe is now ready to personally make an approach to sign Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City as he looks to help the England international revive his career courtesy of Newcastle.

The midfielder was dropped by Pep Guardiola on the final day of the season and reports have since revealed that he could miss out on a place in Manchester City’s Club World Cup squad as the exit door swings open.

The next move is key for Grealish with the World Cup coming up next summer and Thomas Tuchel recently making it clear that he needs to be back playing every week if he is to work his way back into the England squad.

£50m star so close to joining Newcastle his club are lining up replacement

The Magpies are reportedly closing in on a statement signing…

1 BySean Markus Clifford Jun 8, 2025

The Three Lions boss told reporters: “He is never shy of pressure. It’s the opposite. He grows in big matches but he’s a player who needs minutes and minutes and minutes and simply does not get them for a very long time. That’s basically everything. Nothing has changed.”

With that said, if any side can offer the former Aston Villa star that and cover his hefty £16m-a-year salary, it may well be Newcastle this summer.

Ange's own Florian Wirtz: Spurs now favourites to sign £68m "superstar"

Ange Postecoglou enjoyed the most glorious vindication as he lifted the Europa League after leading his Tottenham Hotspur side to victory against Manchester United, making good on a promise that was scoffed at by detractors when made.

However, there’s no detracting from the fact that Spurs have flattered to deceive this season, 17th in the Premier League with one match left to play, having been battered by injuries and consequent struggles for any measure of fluency.

Things need to change next season, and Daniel Levy will certainly be wrestling over the manager’s seat, with Postecoglou’s future uncertain in spite of his success in ending the club’s interminable trophy drought.

However, by doing so, the Aussie tactician has salvaged something special from this difficult year, placing Tottenham in next year’s Champions League group stage. By doing so, it’s opened the door for exciting signings to strengthen the squad.

Spurs favourites to seal statement signing

As per Spanish sources, Tottenham are the favourites to sign RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons this summer after unlocking the door to Europe’s elite stage.

Leipzig failed to qualify for Europe this term and have thus informed Simons he will be allowed to leave, though they will demand €80m (£68m) for his release.

Liverpool had been in the running for the Dutchman but have moved to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz instead, with the German side looking for a €150m (£126m) payment. However, the Lilywhites will feel that they can secure a signing every bit as impactful and for almost half the cost.

Why Spurs must sign Xavi Simons

Described as a “superstar” in the making by analyst Ben Mattinson, Simons left Paris Saint-Germain to make his name at Leipzig back in the summer of 2023, playing the coming campaign as a loanee before signing permanently in a €50m (£42m) deal.

Alternating between central attacking midfield and wider berths, he’s been an invariably prolific presence, posting 44 goal contributions from 76 matches in all competitions.

Xavi Simons celebrates

Described as a “game-changer” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Simons has the potency to make a stunning impression in Postecoglou’s Spurs squad, but he also has the strength and solidity to thrive in the wider lens of English football.

When looking at how he compares with Liverpool’s soon-to-be-signed superstar in the Bundesliga this year, you begin to see that Tottenham could bag themselves a winner here.

Honestly, there’s a case to be made that Simons has enjoyed the better Bundesliga campaign, marginally outperforming last year’s Player of the Season across many of the underlying metrics and proving he has what it takes to thrive in the Premier League, confident in the duel and precise with his passing.

This robust Netherlands star is exactly what Tottenham need, and though at £68m he’d prove their record signing, it would be money well spent for a team now with a unique opportunity to put the year’s issues in the past and turn toward a sustained period of success.

Without question, Wirtz is one of the most exciting midfielders of his generation. Former Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes has even said he’s “probably the best midfielder in the world.” However, his loyalties obviously lie with the Werkself.

If anything, Simons’ metrics simply highlight the calibre of player Postecoglou would be bringing into his ranks, ready to steer this Tottenham team toward an illustrious new era.
