SLC's new rule: six-month waiting period for retiring players to get NOCs for T20 leagues

Sri Lanka Cricket has released a set of guidelines for players choosing to retire from international cricket, namely a requirement to provide SLC with three months’ notice of their intention to retire, a six-month waiting period post-retirement in order to obtain an NOC to play in overseas franchise tournaments, and the need to play in at least 80% of domestic matches in a season if they are to be eligible for the Lanka Premier League. The decision comes in the wake of Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa both announcing their retirements in recent days – the former from red-ball cricket and the latter from international cricket entirely.ESPNcricinfo understands that among the reasons behind the updated guidelines are concerns that several players may potentially be considering their international futures, especially in the context of new mandatory fitness requirements and the fact that franchise cricket tends to be more lucrative. There have been rumours circulating of other national players calling time on their international careers, with batter Avishka Fernando even taking to social media to deny unsubstantiated reports doing the rounds.”I have no intentions of retiring from any format of cricket. Please don’t follow or believe this gossip social media pages,” Fernando tweeted. As per the SLC media release, the new mandates are as follows: “1. National players who intend to retire from national cricket should provide three months’ notice to Sri Lanka cricket of their intention to retire.”2. Retired national players who wish to obtain ‘No Objection Certificates’ (NOCs) to play in overseas franchise leagues will only be issued to such players who have completed six months of their effective date of retirement.”3. Retired national players will be considered eligible for local leagues such as the LPL, only if they have played 80% of matches in the domestic cricket competitions conducted in the season prior to the conducting of the league.”Related

While the first and last points skirt the line in terms of SLC’s range of authority for contracted players – there is already a clause within the present central contracts requiring players provide the board with adequate notice of retirement, while in the past player selection has been scrutinised due to inadequate time spent playing domestic cricket – there is currently no stipulation in player contracts that require retired players to obtain NOCs.SLC CEO Ashley de Silva however told ESPNcricinfo that this has long been accepted protocol between boards, both to ensure the integrity of their leagues. “Most of the member countries don’t encourage players [to play in their franchise league] without an NOC. We don’t accept any player to play in our leagues – especially since it’s been sanctioned by the ICC – without an NOC,” de Silva said. “They need to first get approval from their respective boards. Even if it’s a retired player.”Because a retired play can get involved in [other] tournaments that are not sanctioned by the ICC. In the event that happens, member boards may [at their discretion] not allow those players to take part in their own leagues.”If we find out a player has taken part in an unsanctioned tournament, we will take disciplinary action against them. For example, we won’t let them be involved in the administration at Sri Lanka Cricket. So, before they go, they [the players] should know it’s a tournament sanctioned by the ICC and that’s why they need an NOC from the respective boards.”de Silva added that the new guidelines would be included in the next batch of central contracts due to be announced in February. The old contracts were up at the end of 2021 but were extended by a month till end-January.

Kyle Verreynne stars with 95 but game ends in washout

Only two overs of the Netherlands chase was possible in Centurion

Match abandoned With uncertainty over whether Netherlands will play their remaining two ODIs in South Africa, even the result of the first could not be decided. Heavy rain washed out the afternoon’s play with only two overs possible in Netherlands’ chase of 278. That means points have been shared five apiece from this fixture, which puts Netherlands on an equal footing with Zimbabwe in joint-last place on the Super League table and keeps South Africa in ninth position, just outside the automatic qualification zone for the 2023 World Cup.A decision on whether the rest of the series will go ahead as planned will be taken in the next 24 to 48 hours. It is understood that the tour was on the verge of being called off but the Dutch had difficulty securing a flight home and are likely to remain in South Africa for a few days yet. It is now up to the board and players to decide if they are in the right frame of mind for competitive cricket. With knowledge of the new variant and potential restrictions known since Thursday evening, both sides appeared in the mood to play. Netherlands had South Africa in a strangle for all but the last three overs of the innings and though they have never beaten a top-eight team when they have chased, they were denied the opportunity to change that by the weather. South Africa’s batting was sluggish for the most part but they might have felt they had enough on the board after their strong finish.Kyle Verreynne fell five runs short of a maiden ODI century but his innings formed the spine of South Africa’s 277 for 7. The hosts’ run-rate hovered below five until the 47th over when Andile Phehlukwayo served up a reminder of his finishing skills with a 22-ball 48. Netherlands bowled well as a collective and put on a display of sharp fielding and limited South Africa to only two partnerships of substance.Phehlukwayo and Keshav Maharaj put on 68 off 37 balls for the eighth wicket after Verreynne and debutant Zubayr Hamza shared a 119-run third wicket stand to lead the recovery from losing the openers early. Fred Klaassen had Reeza Hendricks caught at short cover, playing too early at a full delivery, and Janneman Malan edged to first slip after walking down the track and attempting to drive a waist-high delivery. South Africa were 24 for 2 after seven overs. They could have been 66 for 3 in the 15th over when Verreynne threw his bat at a Brandon Glover ball and sent it to Stephan Myburgh at point. The former Titans’ player could not hold on to the chance and Verreynne was let off, on 19. He went on to play chancelessly through the rest of his innings, acting as the aggressor to Hamza’s anchor. Verreynne brought up fifty first, off 54 balls before Hamza reached his milestone, off 71. They took South Africa to the halfway stage on 124 for 2 and seemed well set to continue but were separated four overs later.Hamza became Glover’s second victim when he skied a short ball to wicketkeeper Scott Edwards bringing South Africa’s most experienced batter, David Miller to the crease. He watched while Verreynne was hit on the chest by Timm van der Gugten and then hit Pieter Seelar in the nether regions an over later – the latter required some on-field attention amid many laughs. Netherlands kept Miller fairly quiet and though he threatened with one six, his attempt at a second was well caught by Max O’Dowd in the deep.Khaya Zondo was unable to make an impact on his return to the national side, playing back to a Roelof van der Merwe delivery only to be bowled. Wayne Parnell could have been out on the next ball, when Netherlands reviewed for an lbw but ball tracking showed umpire’s call on leg stump. Parnell did not last too much longer and was dismissed in the same over as Verreynne, giving Vivian Kingma late success.Having lost four wickets for 30 runs, South Africa did not score a boundary from the end of the 37th over all the way up to the 47th when Maharaj chipped Glover over midwicket. Phehlulwayo was responsible for all but one run of South Africa’s most profitable over – the 48th – hitting back-to-back sixes and a four off Kingma. He went on to smash four more sixes and ensured South Africa put on 52 runs off the last three overs to post a competitive total. Still, it is the first time in five meetings against Netherlands that South Africa have not scored over 300.

Arsenal consider move for Vinicius-like ace after extensive Edu scouting

Arsenal are considering a move for a 23-year-old forward, with sporting director Edu Gaspar having personally kept tabs on him since July.

Edu and Arteta targeting new Arsenal striker for 2025

Their failure to land RB Leipzig ace Benjamin Sesko in the summer left the Gunners without a fresh centre-forward option, but that is something they could look to rectify next year, regardless of Kai Havertz’s excellent run of form.

"All-round" £50m Premier League player could now join Arsenal in January

He’d be an interesting new addition.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 11, 2024

Arsenal had an offer rejected by Sesko, who chose to sign an extension with Leipzig instead, and Edu did not move for an alternative after the Slovenian.

Havertz has instead repaid that faith with six goals across 10 appearances in all competitions already, but well-connected former chief scout Mick Brown has “heard” that Arsenal could still look to bring in a new number nine as early as January – if the right man presents himself.

Havertz has been brilliant recently,” said Brown.

You have to give people like that a lot of credit because questions have been asked of him and a lot of people would have shied away. But he’s done a great job for them. You have to credit Mikel Arteta because he’s brought this out of him. I’ve heard, though, that if there was the right option out there, Arsenal still want to buy somebody in that position.

The problem is there’s not a long list of players who are good enough to play that role and are also available to come to the Premier League. Arsenal won’t want to waste any money they have on a player they don’t need.

They’ll be prudent, but I know they’ll be looking for areas they can improve, and I think that will be one even with Havertz playing as well as he has been.”

A fair few strikers have been linked already, but a new name is now being mentioned in Botafogo star Igor Jesus.

Arsenal consider Igor Jesus move after extensive Edu scouting

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal could consider a move for Igor Jesus, following extensive scouting by Edu personally – which has been ongoing since as far back as July.

The 23-year-old scored on his debut for Brazil early Friday, making a major impact during their FIFA World Cup qualifying win over Chile in South America, and he’s bagged seven in all competitions at club level after making a switch from UAE side Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club in the summer.

Chelsea are also keeping a watchful eye on the player amid their ongoing search for Brazilian talents, with Jesus himself describing his playing style as “similar” to his country’s fellow stars Gabriel Martinelli, Vinicus Jr and Rodrygo.

“The national team has a very pacey attack when you look at players like Vinicius, Rodrygo and Martinelli,” Jesus said to FIFA’s official website.

“I think my game is quite similar to theirs. I like to try to attack the spaces and I am mobile. I don’t just stay in the box. I am capable of holding onto balls played out by the keeper and holding off defenders, which I think helps to ease the pressure on the team in tough passages of play.

“I hope I can play well so that I get called up for future squads too.”

Hard quarantine set to challenge preparation for India and Australia

Players will have seven days to build-up to the series after their hotel isolation

Andrew McGlashan30-Aug-2021A tough preparation awaits the India team and the majority of the Australia squad ahead of their multi-format series which has been moved entirely to Queensland. The visitors along with those Australian players based in Sydney and Melbourne will begin 14 days hard quarantine on Monday with no exemptions for training meaning two weeks of only being able to do what is possible inside a hotel room.It impacts 12 of Australia’s 18-player squad with only Beth Mooney (Queensland), Molly Strano and Nicola Carey (Tasmania), and Darcie Brown and Tahlia McGrath (South Australia) able to join the team closer to the start of the series.Georgia Redmayne, who has earned her first call-up for this series, is currently undertaking hotel quarantine following her return from the Hundred in England.Last season players from Victoria and New South Wales also had to quarantine ahead of playing New Zealand in Brisbane although on that occasion they were allowed to train in small groups at Allan Border Field.Related

India in Australia: Start delayed by two days, all games to be played in Queensland

“We’re incredibly grateful to the government up here in Queensland for allowing our players in,” head coach Matthew Mott said. “We’ve been really good at quarantining. It’s going to be tough for those players especially leading into a Big Bash straight afterwards so looking after them mentally and physically will be really important.”Those in quarantine will be released on September 13 giving them seven days to prepare for the start of the ODI series in Mackay which has been pushed back two days from the original date. The Australia squad has not been together since the tour of New Zealand in April with various plans for winter camps in Brisbane and Darwin having to be scrapped due to Covid-19 outbreaks. The majority of the Australia squad face two weeks quarantine before facing India•Getty Images

“It’s been a long time coming, unfortunately,” Mott said. “It will be great to get everyone back together. I think we’ve been pretty good with our communication over all the various forums but there’s nothing like getting back together.”Earlier this month captain Meg Lanning said that the squad was prepared for any situation and was confident the team would be ready whatever form their build-up took.”There’s an element of the unknown, we haven’t been together for quite a long time, haven’t had any practice, but to be honest, and we’ve spoken about this, these days there is no ideal preparation,” she said. “You just have to make the most of what’s in front of you. You need to call on your experience and trust yourself a lot. That does challenge people but we’ve dealt with that really well so far and this series will be no different. Whatever preparation we get to do that will be good enough.”In the original schedule for the series, the day-night Test was set for the WACA in Perth bringing with it the potential for pace and bounce and the excitement generated by Australia’s group of young quick bowlers including Tayla Vlaeminck, Darcie Brown, Stella Campbell, Annabel Sutherland, and Maitlan Brown. However, Mott is hopeful that those characteristics won’t be lost by the move to the Metricon Stadium which will also host the T20Is that conclude the series in early October. “The pitch from what I’ve seen in the Big Bash has been exceptional so hopefully get a bit of pace and bounce and bring a couple of our young quicks into the contest,” he said.

Ramesh Powar returns as India Women coach

He replaces WV Raman, coming back after his last stint had ended in an acrimonious fallout with Mithali Raj

Ramesh Powar has returned as the India Women coach, after his first stint ended in acrimony in late 2018 amid a fallout with Mithali Raj.Powar was replaced by WV Raman, and will now take over from the incumbent. While Raman’s coaching tenure began in December 2018, the Indian team has been largely inactive for almost two years, including the time period after which the Covid-19 pandemic struck.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Under Raman, India reached the final of the T20 World Cup in 2020, losing to Australia on March 8. With the pandemic striking worldwide almost immediately after, the team didn’t play another international match until their home series against South Africa Women that began on March 7 earlier this year. South Africa won the ODIs 4-1, and the T20Is 2-1. Raman’s position had come in for scrutiny following the losses to South Africa, and those reversals, ESPNcricinfo understands, prompted the selection panel led by Neetu David to ask the BCCI for a rethink on the support staff. BCCI secretary Jay Shah is believed to have spoken to at least one member of the selection committee before the Indian board put out an advertisement, on April 13, inviting applications for the head coach’s job – for a term of two years, with the job including overseeing the senior team as well as the India A and Under-19 teams.Powar was then selected by the Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik, who interviewed a number of candidates for the post which saw 35 applications. Besides Powar and Raman – who re-applied – the others in the fray were Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Ajay Ratra, Mamtha Maben, Devika Palshikar, former chair of selectors Hemlatha Kala, and former assistant coach Suman Sharma.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands Powar is expected to meet with the five-member selection panel, led by Neetu David, on a virtual platform this week to pick the squad for India’s upcoming tour of the UK, which kicks off with a one-off Test on June 16 in Bristol.Powar had first been appointed as coach in July 2018 in an interim capacity, and his contract was then extended to cover the 2018 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. While India reached the semi-finals of the event, its aftermath had Raj and Powar trading accusations, with Raj saying she felt “deflated, depressed and let down” by the actions of Powar during the tournament, and Powar countering that Raj had “threatened to retire” mid-tournament if she wasn’t given the opener’s slot. The controversy meant Powar’s contract was not renewed, even though senior players Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana had both written to the BCCI urging them to continue with him.Powar then worked at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and with the India A sides, before taking over as the coach of Mumbai men’s team in February 2021. Under his charge, Mumbai turned their fortunes around to romp to the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-overs domestic competition) title after a forgettable Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign in which they won only one of their five games. In his playing career, Powar played two Tests and 31 ODIs for India from 2004 to 2007, taking a total of 40 international wickets. His domestic career spanned from 1999-00 to 2015, as an offspinning allrounder of considerable skill. He took 470 first-class wickets (average 31.31) while also scoring 4245 first-class runs (average 26.53) in 148 games. He played 113 List A matches, taking 142 wickets and hitting 1082 runs. Powar played 28 T20 games, including in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab and Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

Imagine him & Richardson: Everton ready new bid for "nightmare" ace

This summer has been a phenomenal window for Everton as the club look to push further clear of the Premier League’s drop zone during the 2024/25 campaign.

Sean Dyche has already secured five transfers ahead of the start of the season next weekend, with the Toffees signing reinforcements in numerous key positions across the pitch.

From defenders such as Jake O’Brien to attackers such as Iliman Ndiaye, the club have added needed depth to help transform Dyche’s side into a comfortable mid-table side after multiple near misses with relegation.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

However, his side are still in the market to improve further before the transfer deadline on August 30th, with various players still in contention over a move to Goodison Park this summer.

One player has been constantly touted with a move to Merseyside, with a fresh update released about the Toffees’ hunt to win the race for his signature.

Everton to make new bid for £25m attacker

Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto is a player who has been linked with a move to Everton during at least the last three transfer windows, with Dyche failing to agree a deal for the Italian on all three attempts.

This summer is no different, with The Athletic recently reporting that the Toffees have already had a £23m bid for the 20-year-old rejected – with no follow-up offer yet to be placed.

However, TEAMtalk have recently reported that a second bid for Gnonto is expected to be submitted, with Daniel Farke’s side holding out for a fee in the region of £25m despite failing to clinch promotion from the Championship last season.

The report also states the Italian remains one of the club’s top targets to improve the wide areas ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with Gnonto having the ability to be a real success at Goodison should a deal be agreed.

Why Gnonto could form a partnership with Richardson

In another attempt to further bolster his squad, Dyche has set his sights on signing Reims midfielder Amir Richardson this summer, in an attempt to fill the void left by Amadou Onana after his departure to Aston Villa earlier this summer.

The Moroccan has featured for his nation at this summer's Olympic Games, attracting interest from the Toffees alongside a host of other Premier League sides.

However, it's his figures from the 2023/24 campaign in Ligue 1 that could allow the 22-year-old to form an excellent partnership with Gnonto, should they both complete their respective moves to Goodison this summer.

He averaged 4.8 progressive passes and 1.9 progressive carries last season – showcasing his desire to take the ball into forward areas, allowing the Italian to have a pivotal impact in the final third.

Gnonto, who's been described as a “nightmare” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registered ten goals or assists for Leeds in a wide role, proving he has the ability to create and finish opportunities for Dyche’s side.

He also averaged 2.6 shots per 90, along with 1.5 successful take-ons, potentially allowing the Toffees to increase their Premier League goal tally of just 40 from the last campaign.

It’s evident that the youngster can cause carnage in the final third, potentially reaching the next level should he gain consistent game time and complete a move to Everton.

£25m would be an excellent price for a forward who has proven his talents, but also has a huge ceiling to improve, potentially being one of the standout performers for Dyche’s side in their hunt for a mid-table finish this season.

Pascal Struijk 2.0: Leeds keen on new swoop for a ‘top teen talent’

Leeds United are currently preparing to fight for promotion from the Championship after they failed to return to the Premier League last season.

The Whites fell at the final hurdle as Adam Armstrong's goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win for Southampton at Wembley in the play-off final in May.

Daniel Farke has lost Crysencio Summerville, Glen Kamara, and Archie Gray since that day, but has also signed Joe Rodon, Joe Rothwell, Jayden Bogle, and Alex Cairns.

Whilst Leeds are looking to bring in players who can come in and make an instant impact on the pitch to bolster their promotion chances, they are also reportedly eyeing up a future star.

Leeds eyeing teenage talent

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Whites are one of the teams eyeing up a deal for Freiburg's "top talent" centre-back Bruno Ogbus.

Farke is keen on a swoop for the teenage central defender to come in and bolster the side's options at the back, even if it is an U21 transfer to begin with, but will have to beat off competition from several other sides.

Italian giants AC Milan have been linked with an interest and had a bid turned down for the defender, whilst Plettenberg adds that Nottingham Forest are also in the race to land his services.

The reporter claims that both Forest and Leeds are monitoring the 18-year-old starlet's situation ahead of a potential swoop for his signature.

If the Whites can win the race for Ogbus, however, then the teenage battler could end up being the club's next version of Dutch ace Pascal Struijk.

Why Ogbus could be Struijk 2.0

Back in 2018, Leeds swooped to sign the defensive talent from Eredivisie giants Ajax on a permanent deal, when he was just 18 at the time.

Struijk only made five league appearances, all of which came in the 2019/20 Championship season, in his first two-and-a-half-years at Elland Road, as he developed in the academy before emerging as a first-team option.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutch defender was a dominant force at the back when fit in the second tier last season, winning the majority of his duels on the deck and in the air.

He played third division football in Germany for Freiburg's reserves last term and ranked within the top 8% of his positional peers in the league for shots blocked per 90 and the top 22% for his percentage of defensive duels won, which speaks to his willingness to put his body on the line.
