Guardiola was spotted raising six fingers at Liverpool fans after being mocked by supporters during Manchester City's 2-0 defeat to the Reds at Anfield. The gesture was in reference to City's six Premier League titles won under Guardiola after the City boss had been told he was "getting sacked in the morning". The defeat ensured City's dismal run of form continued, with Guardiola's men winless in their last seven games across all competitions.

The 53-year-old's antics have drawn comparisons with Mourinho, who has made a habit of using gestures throughout his managerial career. Mourinho famously held up three fingers towards the end of his stint at Manchester United, and it has been put to Guardiola that his recent actions, coupled with the team's poor form, could be compared to the Portuguese's situation at Old Trafford.

WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

He told reporters: "I hope not in my case… He won three, I won six.. but we are the same like that. We are together in the those situations. To make our fans know that we are much, much better than the people that sing that [Liverpool fans singing sacked in the morning]. It [the gesture] was just to make our fans feel that what we have done is extraordinary. I want to prove that we are an incredible football club. Sooner or later it’s going to be the end but I will try to extend as much as possible for the best of my club.”

Mohammed Siraj to stay back in Australia despite father's death in India

India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who is in Australia with the Indian squads for the upcoming four-Test series, lost his father Mohammed Ghouse on Friday in India. According to a BCCI release, Siraj was offered the option of flying back home but the fast bowler decided to stay with the Indian squad in Australia.Ghouse was 53 and lost the battle to a lung ailment. He was instrumental in Siraj’s growth as a cricketer as he supported his son’s ambitions with his limited resources. The Indian squad, currently in the middle of a 14-day quarantine period, has been training in isolation on the outskirts of Sydney after arriving on November 13 from the UAE after the IPL.Siraj, 26, has played one ODI and three T20Is so far and is part of the Test squad in Australia. He will be the fifth pace-bowling option along with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini. Ishant Sharma, currently at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, is also expected to join the squad ahead of the first Test starting on December 17, once he is declared fit.In a video posted on social media by the BCCI on Tuesday, Siraj and Shami were seen bowling with the pink and red balls to captain Virat Kohli and other batsmen.Siraj recently represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL to take 11 wickets in nine games, including a match-winning 3 for 8 against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Dinesh Karthik 'hands over' KKR captaincy reins to Eoin Morgan

Dinesh Karthik has stepped down as the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, with Eoin Morgan replacing him. Karthik, a team statement said, wanted to focus on his batting. The franchise made the announcement hours before their match against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday. The Knight Riders are currently fourth on the points table with four wins and three losses in first half of the season.Karthik had struggled for fluency in the first seven matches this season after shuffling around in the middle order. He has scored 108 runs in seven innings with a highest of 58, at a strike rate of 136.ALSO READ: Rohit’s rise, Gambhir’s fall and other captaincy changes in the IPLIn a media statement, the Knight Riders said Karthik “wishes to handover” the leadership to Morgan “with a view to focus on his batting and contributing more to the team’s cause”. Karthik will now assume vice-captain’s duties with the team.Morgan, speaking to , reacted to the development saying, “I was surprised as was everybody a little bit yesterday. DK informed us yesterday that he would like to step back and focus on his batting as he feels that is the best option for the team. It is incredibly selfless and it also shows a lot of courage for him to do that putting the team first ahead of him being skipper.”So I’m delighted to continue the leadership role within the side. Obviously captain, and not vice-captain now, but hopefully will continue to work alongside our players. We are only halfway through the tournament at the moment. We’ve showed some potential. Haven’t quite achieved majority of it yet. Tonight will be another good test, hopefully we’ll be up to it.” ‘Takes a lot of courage’
Venky Mysore, Knight Riders’ chief executive, said the franchise was “surprised” by Karthik’s decision. Mysore, though, said he looked at the development as just a captaincy swap.”We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first,” Mysore said. “It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes.”In 2018 Karthik was bought by the Knight Riders for INR 7.4 crore ($1.156 million then) and appointed as captain. Under him, the Knight Riders finished third in 2018 and fifth in 2019. Overall Karthik has so far scored 859 runs at a strike rate of nearly 146 with five half-centuries. However, he has been bothered by his batting position this IPL.At the season opening media conference, Karthik admitted as much that he was still working out the right batting position with head coach Brendon McCullum. “That is something on top of our agenda as well. The coach is not letting me go where I want,” Karthik said tongue-in-cheek, responding to a query about whether he would be batting ahead of Nitish Rana in the top order.McCullum had said the Knight Riders had enough left-hand and right-hand batting options. “We got such world-class players in the likes of Dinesh and also Nitish so we can mix and match a little bit based on strategy. But that will certainly include … the skipper batting little bit up the order.”Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan have a chat•BCCI

Why Morgan?
Morgan has been solid with the bat. Currently he is the second-best batsman for the Knight Riders scoring 175 runs at a strike rate of nearly 130.Morgan is known mainly for his success as England ODI captain, especially the 2019 World Cup win. But he has equally extensive experience as a leader in T20s. In 88 T20s he has been captain, Morgan has won 39 matches, lost 45, tied twice with one no result.Morgan was bought by the Knight Riders at the 2020 auction for INR 5.25 cr ($739,000). His close relationship with McCullum was highlighted as one key reason behind the franchise hiring him. But Morgan was brought in for the dual purpose of lending experience in the middle order and helping the Knight Riders’ leadership group comprising McCullum, Karthik and Abhishek Nayar.”Within any good side or great side around the world you got to have a number of leaders within the change room. We’ve got them in abundance,” Morgan said. “We have a lot of young guys coming through that lead from the front: (Shubman) Gill, Rana to name a few… (Kamlesh) Nagarkoti has stepped up at different stages. And we have an abundance of overseas players to lead as well. So between myself and Dinesh, captain and vice-captain, we can be at the forefront of that, but the driving engine is the guys behind us.”The rise in Morgan’s stature can be gauged from the fact that in 2012 he and McCullum were team-mates at the Knight Riders. Now he is an established leader, talked about as one of the best limited overs captains in white-ball cricket. Morgan himself has talked about the big difference since 2012 and now his belief in himself as batsman and leader has grown immensely.”He’s an incredibly dangerous player and probably the best middle-order batsman in the shorter version over the last two years,” McCullum told the Indian daily recently.Mysore said the franchise was “fortunate” to have Morgan, who was “willing” to lead the Knight Riders. “DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner.”

Leeds target’s value has skyrocketed 7,500% but he could cost just £2.5m

Leeds United are interested in signing a player whose market value has risen by 7,500% in the last couple of years, according to reports.

Leeds transfer rumours

Leeds United are once again preparing for another season in the Championship. The Whites spent a good chunk of 2023/24 in and around the automatic promotion places but their form at the end of the normal season saw the Yorkshire outfit slip down to 3rd in the table, with Ipswich Town taking their spot in the Premier League. Daniel Farke's side went on to reach the play-off final but fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton.

Leeds United are open to selling a fringe player this summer.

ByJosh Barker Jun 10, 2024

Leeds' failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League is expected to have some impact on their transfer business. On the outgoing front, Wilfried Gnonto is said to be pushing to leave Leeds and wants a transfer to the Serie A. Elsewhere, there has been heavy interest in Crysencio Summerville, who has been linked with Liverpool. Finally, midfielder Archie Gray is said to be of interest to German powerhouse, Bayern Munich.

As well as potentially losing some of their key stars, Leeds are unlikely to be able to target some players they were perhaps looking at earlier this year, including Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. Instead, their focus has seemingly been on smaller names who would not cost as much.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Leeds are one of a number of clubs keen on a possible swoop to sign Stade Brestois attacker Karamoko Dembele. They are also believed to be interested in the services of Stuttgart winger Silas Katompa Mvumpa. Furthermore, The Whites are one of the clubs lining up a swoop to sign FC St. Pauli central defender Eric Smith as a potential replacement for Tottenham star Joe Rodon.

Leeds target player whose value has skyrocketed 7,500%

Now, another potential budget signing has been linked with a move to Elland Road. The player in question is Natan Girma, who is currently plying his trade in the Serie B with Reggiana.

Grima joined Reggiana on a free transfer from Sona in July of 2023. Despite only spending one season at his current club, the attacking midfielder has seen his market value rise 7,500% from €10,000 to €750,000. Grima made 26 league appearances across 2023/24, scoring five and assisting three as Reggiana secured an 11th-place finish.

The 22-year-old remains under contract with his current side until 2027, with the option of a further year, but reports emerging in Italy suggest a move to England could be on the cards. It is stated that Reggiana do not want to part ways with the midfielder but they could be forced to do so if the right offer came in.

On this front, offers lower than £2.5m will reportedly not be looked at. However, given his staggering market value increase in just one year, £2.5m+ still seems a serious bargain for any potentially interested club. His current trajectory looks to be one of a player on the rise, so that fee could look like a bargain in a few years.

Italian side Monza are understood to be keen on Grima but the report from Italy also mentions Leeds and Watford have been in contact with the player's camp to ask for information.

Report: Former USMNT bosses Bruce Arena, Gregg Berhalter among candidates for San Jose Earthquakes coaching role

The Earthquakes are signaling ambition with their manager search, as the club currently sits bottom in MLS

San Jose reportedly eying five candidatesIan Russell currently interim bossQuakes currently worst record in MLSGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

Changes appear to be coming to the MLS cellar dwellers in the San Jose Earthquakes. The team is ramping up its search for a new head coach and has reportedly interviewed five candidates for the job, including two former USMNT bosses: Gregg Berhalter and Bruce Arena. The other candidates include Gio Savarese, Robin Fraser and current interim coach Ian Russell.

The Quakes currently have 18 points this, the lowest in the league and 10 points adrift from the second-worst team in MLS in the New England Revolution. Tom Bogert was first to report the news.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

San Jose is in need of a culture reset, which means the team needs to get its next coaching decision right. Leading forward Jeremy Ebobisse painted a bleak picture of the franchise last weekend.

“Everything is a disaster, frankly," Ebobisse said. “We can’t talk about next year because I don’t know if I’m going to be here next year. I don’t know if some of the guys in the locker room will be here”

The team has made the postseason three times since 2013 and has seen high-profile coaching moves, such as Matías Almeyda fail to deliver.

The five candidates mentioned all have MLS experience, so that's an advantage over the Almeyda experiment. San Jose will have some competition for Berhalter, as the Chicago Fire are also linked with a move for the recent U.S. boss. Despite a controversial exit from New England, Arena is the most decorated MLS coach out of the group — winning five Cups.

Savarese and Fraser have had success with small market teams, with a proven track record of getting teams to overachieve with modest resources.

Considering the team is the Bay Area, has a solid academy setup and plays in one of the league's newer stadiums, they have the components to recruit well on both the technical and playing staff.

DID YOU KNOW?

The lowest point total in MLS history goes to the 2001 Tampa Bay Mutiny with 14, yet it should be noted that team played in only 27 matches and was in a 12-team league. Since switching to a 34-game format in 2010, the 2013 D.C. United team would fall into the lowest point total at 16 points.

If San Jose fails to pick up any more points, it would be the second-worst tally in a 34-game format. San Jose is also tied for third in that category, as it got just 21 points in the 2018 season.

West Ham now make large offer to manager who plays "spectacular" football

West Ham United have already begun their hunt for a new manager, it has been reported, and have even gone on to make an early offer for their David Moyes replacement.

Moyes going down swinging

Despite constant speculation about his future, West Ham boss David Moyes isn't going down without a fight, and neither are his side. A late Michail Antonio header helped them hold Liverpool to a point at the London Stadium, and effectively ended Liverpool's Premier League title hopes in the process.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen

A point didn't really help either side though, with West Ham now sitting four points behind Newcastle United in the Premier League having played a game more.

The Reds will be hunting for a new manager at the end of the season with Jurgen Klopp's departure, and there appears to be a strong possibility that the east Londoners may be doing so too, with Moyes set to be out of contract as things stand.

New manager offer made but move unlikely

Now, reports have once again linked the Hammers with a replacement for Moyes, and even goes as far to suggest that the Londoners have made an offer. The man in question? Ex-Sevilla, Spain and Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui, who has been out of work since leaving the Molineux outfit days before the new season.

There had already been reports of talks, but now Italian sources [via Sport Witness] claim that the Hammers have put forward an offer for the ex-Real Madrid boss. Not just any offer either. They claim that David Sullivan has tabled a rich offer’ for his services this summer.

However, a move seemingly remains unlikely, with the report going on to note that Lopetegui prefers the opportunity to manage AC Milan, which is another option for him at present with current boss Stefano Pioli expected to leave San Siro this summer.

And some in Milan are keen to see him arrive, with former Rossoneri star Filippo Galli singing Lopetegui's praises: "It’s true, things didn’t go well for him at Madrid and Porto, but as coach of Spain they achieved great results, offering spectacular football, and he won with Sevilla.

"Let’s not forget that he belongs to the Basque school, from Xabi Alonso to Arteta and Unai Emery, many are doing very well. Lopetegui is a modern coach, who builds his teams according to the principles of positional football."

Meanwhile, there isn't consensus over Lopetegui moving back to England, and The Guardian add that "key figures at the London Stadium are understood to be split on whether the former Spain and Real Madrid manager is the right man to replace Moyes".

They even add that there is still a glimmer of hope for Moyes, and that the Hammers could make "a late U-turn", though at this point there seems to have been too much smoke not to be fire regarding his departure.
