'Feared for our lives' – Fenerbahce star opens up terrifying pitch invasion by Trabzonspor fans that left players 'in shock'

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

At the final whistle, scenes of violence unfolded as Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch, targeting Fenerbahce players. Fenerbahce goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was punched, while players Michy Batshuayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel found themselves embroiled in altercations with home supporters.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The longstanding rivalry between the two clubs has been fraught with tension, escalating since the dramatic 2011 league title win by Fenerbahce, secured on goal difference to the detriment of their opponents. And the late victory in Sunday's match, which kept Fenerbahce two points behind title rivals Galatasaray, further heightened tensions between the clubs.

  • WHAT DJIKU SAID

In an interview with Djiku expressed the fear that gripped him and his teammates during the violent onslaught.

"There was a feeling of fear for our lives, because when a supporter is ready to do battle you never know what might happen," he said.

"The start of the game went very well, both on and off the pitch, with us winning 2-0. In the second half, the fans started throwing water bottles, coins and smoke bombs.

"The referee, the stadium announcer and the Trabzonspor players repeatedly asked the fans to calm down to avoid stopping the match. At the final whistle, we celebrated the victory in the middle of the pitch – as we do at every match – given that we were playing against the third-placed team and that Galatasaray had won against Kasimpasa. We saw one fan enter the pitch and within seconds several more, until the stewards were completely overwhelmed. Hundreds of people were coming towards us and the pitch was completely invaded.

"We all went in at the same time on the recommendation of the stewards and with the help of the Trabzonspor players. It all happened very quickly. Some of my team-mates had no choice but to defend themselves to save their lives. Personally, I was lucky not to have been hit, unlike my team-mate Livakovic and some others."

  • INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY TO NAB THE CULPRITS

The reprehensible actions of the supporters have drawn widespread condemnation, with Turkey's interior minister Ali Yerlikaya and FIFA President Gianni Infantino both denouncing the violence. An investigation has been launched to address the incident and hold those responsible to account.

"When we arrived in the dressing room we were still in shock and dismay at what had just happened," said Djiku. "We didn't think that celebrating a victory could lead to so much happening. The safety of footballers should be the sole responsibility of clubs. We felt that it was extremely sad for both teams and for Turkish football in terms of the images that were sent back."

'Who made the yo-yo test a pre-requisite for selection?'

This is what BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry wants to know, even as coach Ravi Shastri says the yo-yo test as a measure of fitness is ‘not going to go anywhere’

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-20185:39

Taking on the yo-yo test

How has the yo-yo test become a prerequisite for selection in the Indian team? In an exhaustive letter written to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry has raised this question about the yo-yo test. The letter comes even as coach Ravi Shastri has suggested the test will be a regular feature for the Indian team going forward. has the full copy of Chaudhry’s letter, which states: “I keep reading about the yo-yo test being a criterion for selection in the Indian team. Is this correct? If so, who took this decision and when and what is the rationale for the same?”At which forum was the decision taken to have a minimum score on the yo-yo test as a prerequisite for selection in a BCCI-selected team? Who all were present in the meeting that decided this?”Most importantly, once this decision was taken, to whom was the same communicated? Was it communicated to all first-class players in India? Was it communicated to all List A players in India? Was it communicated to all state cricket associations to communicate to their players?”Chaudhry’s questions come after a number of players were sidelined after failing the yo-yo test in the lead-up to the England tour. Ambati Rayudu was dropped from the ODI squad for the three-match series in England after he failed the yo-yo test. Sanju Samson was also withdrawn from the India A squad for the one-day tri-series in England after falling short of the 16:1 benchmark.Fast bowler Mohammed Shami, meanwhile, had been sidelined from squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Bengaluru after failing a fitness test as well; reportedly, he also underwent yo-yo tests, though the results of these tests could not be confirmed. Previously, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh had been the first high-profile players who failed to meet the 16:1 benchmark after it was introduced, and teenaged allrounder Washington Sundar failed it and missed out on selection for a T20I series at home against New Zealand last year.Coach Shastri has often prioritised fitness, even saying last year that he wanted his team to be the best fielding side at the 2019 World Cup. Now, as the senior team departed for England on Friday, he emphasised on the importance of fitness once again, particularly playing up the role of the yo-yo test.”You have a certain ability, but with fitness you can enhance the same ability,” he said. “That is why we emphasise on this yo-yo thing. And whoever thinks it’s a one-off, he’s sadly mistaken. He can go for a walk. The philosophy is simple: you pass, you play; you fail, you fail.”So this is not going to go anywhere and the captain leads from the front, the selectors are on the same page, the entire team management is on the same page, and the boys have responded extremely well.”Shastri’s predecessor Anil Kumble, speaking to the media in Chennai, said that communication is particularly important when it comes to fitness. “It’s about the communication you have with a cricketer,” he said. “If he knows what’s expected of him on the fitness front and what the benchmark is, then what’s the problem?”Last week, Saba Karim, the BCCI general manager for cricket operations, told the that conducting yo-yo tests only after the teams – A and senior – had already been selected for their England tours was a “one-off”, given it was not possible to have the tests beforehand while the IPL was on.

West Brom injury news: "Exciting" £20k-p/w star suffers fresh blow

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a blow after learning that one of their first-team stars is facing a spell on the sidelines, following a fresh update.

West Brom's injuries: Dike, Maja, Reach, Kelly, Sarmiento

At the Hawthorns, Carlos Corberan has Daryl Dike and Josh Maja both out of action with longer-term injuries and the duo are yet to make any kind of significant progress, but there has been some more positive news emerging surrounding another pair.

An injury update on Adam Reach revealed he is on track to return to training in November with the aim being for him to be ready to stage his comeback to competitive action in December, whilst Martin Kelly is making good progress in his recovery according to Carlos Corberan.

Jeremy Sarmiento meanwhile was absent from the 1-0 Championship victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, which caused concern among supporters having had no previous suggestion that he wasn’t going to participate in the game.

Over the summer, Ecuador’s attacking midfielder put pen to paper on a season long loan from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, and has impressed during his ten appearances to date, but unfortunately for the manager, the 21-year-old will have to wait to make his next one.

How long is Jeremy Sarmiento out for?

Delivering an injury update to West Brom’s official website, Corberan confirmed that Sarmiento will be out of action for at least the next month having had a quadricep injury established by medical professionals over the weekend. He said:

"He had some pain in the quadriceps. He was playing some minutes at the end of the Preston game and he felt pain in the muscle, in the left quadricep. With this pain, he was receiving treatment on Sunday and when the doctors checked – when the pain was there and didn't disappear, they made a scan – yesterday, it showed an injury. It is going to keep him apart from the group for four weeks.

"It's difficult. It's something that I have been very, very conscious about, when I've given minutes to him. He had some history of injuries, plus no habit to play games. It's difficult, because when I heard yesterday that he would be injured for four weeks, it's going to affect you. It doesn't mean we don't have solutions, but I never want to lose any player."

Brighton and Hove Albion forward Jeremy Sarmiento.

Jeremy Sarmiento: West Brom's "exciting" gem

When Sarmiento first joined West Brom, journalist Josh Bunting described him as an “exciting” addition, and there’s no doubt that he’s already shown glimpses of what he’s capable of, so it will be a blow to Corberan to not have him at his disposal for a few weeks.

Sarmiento has a salary of £20k-per-week, and has already scored once following his arrival at the Hawthorns. He was averaging 1.2 dribbles per second-tier game prior to his absence (WhoScored – Sarmiento statistics), highlighting his desire to take on his marker and create chances in the final third.

In addition, Sarmiento is a versatile operator having been deployed in five various positions over the pitch since first bursting onto the professional scene, including three roles in the midfield and out wide on both the left and right wings, so considering what he can bring to the side, the sooner he returns to action, the better.

Tottenham: When Son Heung-min may sign new Spurs deal after exciting update

A report has shared when Son Heung-min could sign a new Tottenham contract after impressing under new Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Latest Tottenham news

Life in north London is looking rather rosy after chairman Daniel Levy's decision to appoint Postecoglou in June. Levy and Spurs opted to start from scratch with a more attack-minded tactician, with the Lilywhites chief even admitting his mistakes of bringing in both Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho – who are both trophy-laden coaches at the highest level.

Postecoglou arguably suits the "Tottenham way" far more than the likes of Conte and Mourinho, which has been proven by their electric start this Premier League season.

Indeed, the N17 side have reigned victorious in each of their last four league games and have failed to drop points since an opening weekend 2-2 draw at Brentford.

Wins over Man United, Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield United followed their trip to west London in August, with each of those performances demonstrating Postecoglou's free-flowing, entertaining style of play. Next up, a crunch clash with arch rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but supporters will be feeling very, very confident heading into the derby.

Son Heung-min contract update

One of Postecoglou's key men so far has been Son, coming after a difficult 2022/2023 campaign where he wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders. The 31-year-old admitted it was a difficult time for him, but he has since thrived as Tottenham's new captain in place of former talisman Harry Kane.

Son has been at the centre of reports that fresh terms may well be on the cards, as his current deal is set to expire in 2025. A report this week has shed light on this, with the South Korea international and Postecoglou striking a "great relationship" behind-the-scenes.

He will now indeed be offered a new deal, and talks are ongoing to make it happen. That is according to 90min, who share a timeline of when Son could put pen to paper on a new and improved long-term contract. They even say an agreement is expected by Christmas, and could even be finalised "in a matter of weeks".

Spurs are apparently determined to reward the winger with a fresh contract so this may well come as an exciting update for supporters.

How good is Son Heung-min?

The Asian superstar, who's been called the "most underrated player in Premier League history" by Robbie Keane, has taken to life under Postecoglou very well. Postecogolou holds him in very high esteem, with the Australian praising Son as a "fantastic" footballer this week.

"Everyone knows he's a fantastic footballer but he's just a brilliant human being," said Postecoglou at a Spurs fan forum (via 90min). "For any sort of manager, when you're looking for leaders in a group and they're all different types, firstly what kind of person are they is really important when setting up a team.

"Even from afar, even before I joined the club, obviously I've known Sonny for a long time because being from that part of the world myself and working in Asia and the exposure I had to his standing in the community there, you can tell he was respected. Whether it was teammates or opponents, everyone spoke really highly of him. I think he was the perfect embodiment."

Fulham: Whites Make Deadline Day Bid For £100K-P/W Star

Journalist Charlotte Daly has shared an update on Fulham's transfer deadline day plans concerning Man United defender Eric Bailly.

Will Fulham sign anyone on deadline day?

Marco Silva's side have undergone a fairly solid start to the new season and this last week has displayed some real promise.

Indeed, a dramatic late equaliser from Joao Palhinha secured a 2-2 draw away to title-chasing Arsenal, while Fulham also knocked high-flying Spurs out of the Carabao Cup second round on penalties.

Deadline day, though, represents a significant opportunity to strengthen in key areas ahead of what will be a long and testing season in west London.

Star man Palhinha could also make a dramatic late move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, according to reports today, meaning Fulham have been linked with replacements.

They saw an approach for Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rejected, ultimately due to the player's apparent unwillingness to join, while they have also been looking at Man United's Scott McTominay.

Defence is another area of the squad Silva could look to strengthen before the 11pm cut off tonight, leading to their apparent late interest in signing Bailly from Old Trafford.

The Ivory Coast international, who spent the 2022/2023 campaign on loan at Ligue 1 side Marseille, is currently out-of-favour under Erik ten Hag.

Bailly has racked up nearly half a century of appearances for his country, but at club level, he's been slightly less fortunate. Injury problems have arguably thwarted his Man United career in parts, and now Fulham could offer him a last gap way out.

Daly, speaking on the Daily Mail's live stream (as transcribed by TBR), says the Whites have made a late bid to sign Bailly from United.

Indeed, it is believed the offer comes in the form of a two-year deal for the 29-year-old. However, Daly also explains that Fulham want him to leave Manchester on a free transfer.

“I’ve just been handed two pieces of news so I will just run through those," explained the reporter.

Fulham have made an offer to take Manchester United defender Eric Bailly on a two-year deal, but they want him to leave on a free transfer."

Little else is said on United's response to the proposal, but it appears Fulham are keen pending the right conditions.

What's been said about Eric Bailly?

Rumoured to be on around £100,000-per-week, Bailly's career has arguably stagnated somewhat, but perhaps a fresh opportunity down south could be what he needs.

Former Man United boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer, addressing the media back in 2021, also heaped praise on the defender's immense character behind-the-scenes.

Speaking after a performance against Aston Villa around two years ago, Solskjaer said:

“He’s had such a difficult time with injuries. He’s such a likeable man. In that dressing room, everyone wants to see him succeed. We know how important he can be for us and tonight he was immense.”

Bailly's experience in the English top flight, and internationally for the Ivory Coast, could be a major draw for Fulham and potentially do-able deal – as United presumably look to shift unwanted players.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper Could Sign "Magnificent" £25m Nelsson Alternative

Nottingham Forest are preparing for a busy conclusion of the transfer window, as Steve Cooper eyes final reinforcements to cement his squad for the battles ahead in the 2023/24 campaign.

The Tricky Trees welcomed their fifth arrival this week through Gonzalo Montiel, with the right-back signing on an initial season-long loan with the option to make the move permanent.

In what is a strong capture for the Reds, it seems as though the club are far from closing the book on the window, with more defensive targets circling around the media.

Who could Nottingham Forest sign this summer?

There is ongoing speculation regarding Forest’s interest in Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson, with recent news suggesting that the 24-year-old titan is in the middle of a bidding war.

Reports in Turkey (as relayed by Sport Witness), Forest had an opening bid for the Denmark international rejected, and were told by the Super Lig champions to improve their offer, with it being in the region of €18m (£15m) and his release clause sitting at €25m (£21m).

The report claims that the Premier League side have improved their offer by €1m (£860k), with clarity on the situation not echoed.

It’s unknown whether the new bid will suffice, yet another target has emerged in the same position, with Sport Witness also relaying a report from Portugal that links Forest to Benfica defender Felipe Morato.

The report speculates that the Reds have made a €30m (£25m) offer for the centre-back, who has a €100m (£85m) release clause in his contract with the Eagles.

How good is Felipe Morato?

Considering that Forest are reported to have submitted two offers to Galatasaray in the hope to capture the signature of Nelsson, it would seem that the club are determined to bring him to the City Ground.

However, in Morato, Cooper could find himself chasing a colossus that could be the perfect alternative to the 24-year-old.

Having been described as being a “magnificent centre-back” by scout Jacek Kulig, the Brazilian is coming to be an assured member in the backline for Benfica, as he continues to integrate into the first team.

Benfica defender Morato.

As per FBref, the 22-year-old averaged an impressive 5.28 progressive passes per 90 last term, as well as making 1.28 tackles and winning 2.64 aerials per 90 during the Eagles’ league-winning Primeira Liga campaign.

Standing at 6 foot 4, the Brazilian showed his maturity and composure through his distribution, in which he averaged a stellar pass completion rate of 90.0% last season.

Once lauded as a “beast” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the youngster came out on top in comparison to other target Nelsson in some decimals, with the Galatasaray whiz averaging 0.8 tackles and maintaining a pass completion rate of 86%, via Sofascore.

Mango also hailed the Benfica starlet previously as being “one of the most well-rounded” young defenders, noting his abilities as a ball player and having the perfect fusion of “aggressiveness, intelligence and awareness” so early in his career.

While Nelsson has more experience in playing at senior level, in monitoring Morato, Cooper could have the choice between two potentially strong acquisitions at the City Ground, with both excelling at centre-back for their respective clubs.

£120k-p/w Man Utd Signing Embarrassed On Old Trafford Debut

New Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been chipped from the halfway line on his Old Trafford debut.

What is the latest Andre Onana news?

The 27-year-old only recently signed for Erik ten Hag’s team, joining from Inter Milan for a fee in the region of £47.2m.

With Onana arriving, the Red Devils have allowed experienced number one David de Gea to leave the club following the expiry of his contract after a 12-year spell in England.

The new ‘keeper’s ability on the ball, and willingness to charge out of his box, will potentially suit Ten Hag’s style of play but it does of course come with plenty of risks.

And, unfortunately for Onana, this vulnerability was well and truly exploited as Man Utd took on Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens this week in a friendly.

Indeed, As you can see in the footage below, a poor pass from full-back Diogo Dalot turns over possession on the hallway line and striker Florian Sotoca wastes no time in taking full advantage.

With Onana slightly off his line, the Lens attacker fires a first-time shot way over the head of the goalkeeper and into the back of the next in the most audacious manner.

It’s a truly stunning goal but it won’t go down too well with those who have their doubts over Ten Hag’s new first-choice shot-stopper.

However, goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Casemiro did at least seal a 3-1 comeback win.

What did Dwight Yorke say about Andre Onana?

The decision to let De Gea leave and bring in the former Ajax goalkeeper to replace him has been met with some questions in certain areas of the press.

For instance, Ex-United striker Dwight Yorke pulled no punches with his verdict on Onana, saying the Spaniard is a better option between the sticks.

He explained: “I’ve said before that Man United need to be careful what they wish for with losing David de Gea. For all the good De Gea has done for Man United, the way his career ended was really bad. I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt Man United now they’ve bought Andre Onana.

“Be careful what you wish for. De Gea is the Golden Glove winner, a high-profile player who has made mistakes, like the rest of us. De Gea winning the Golden Glove is like winning the Golden Boot and being the top scorer at the club but still getting replaced by the football club. That does not resonate well with me.”

He added: “Onana tries to be an outfield player rather than a goalkeeper sometimes. I will be watching this guy very closely.”

Elsewhere Gabriel Agbonlahor was disappointed in Andre Onana’s reaction to Harry Maguire in Manchester United’s pre-season defeat to Borussia Dortmund, as he lambasted the defender for a mistake.

The former Aston Villa striker revealed he was disappointed in the £120k-per-week Onana, telling the press: “First of all, Harry Maguire didn’t do anything wrong, he played the ball to a midfielder and the midfielder gave it away and I feel like he’s an easy target. I don’t like that from Onana, I feel he wouldn’t do that to Martinez, are you running after Rashford like that? I don’t think you are.

“Maguire’s an easy target so I think I’d look at that. I’d understand it if it was a big mistake, and it’s cost a goal, or it was Harry Maguire’s fault, fair enough. But, I want to see that energy for every player.”
