Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh starting Sunday because of a shoulder injury, and Umran Malik has replaced him in the ODI squad.Shami is “currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru,” a BCCI statement on Saturday morning said. It has been learnt that Shami had suffered the injury during a training session after he returned from Australia, where India made a semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup last month. It is also understood that Shami could miss the two-Test series in Bangladesh, beginning in Chattogram on December 14.
While Malik, who made a decent start to his ODI career in New Zealand recently, was not in India’s original touring party, India did have the option of calling up one of the quick bowlers who are on a shadow tour of Bangladesh with the A team currently. Navdeep Saini and Mukesh Kumar are among the quicks there. While Saini took four wickets in the first four-day game, Mukesh took three. It is possible, though, that if Shami is ruled out of the Test series too, one of them could come into contention. While Mukesh is uncapped internationally, Saini has played two Tests, having made his debut on the tour of Australia in 2020-21.Apart from Shami, Ravindra Jadeja has also been forced to miss the ODIs since he hasn’t recovered sufficiently after undergoing knee surgery in September. His participation in the Tests also remains doubtful, with left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar – also with India A in Bangladesh – a possible replacement option for Jadeja.

The Tractor Boys did spend upon promotion to the top flight, with Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City and the highest earner at Portman Road on £150,000 per week.
19 Brentford £822,500 per week
Brentford's Yehor Yarmoliuk, Keane Lewis-Potter, Kevin Schade,BryanMbeumo, Mads Roerslev and Mikkel Damsgaard
Next on the list is Brentford, who have been a regular in the Premier League under Thomas Frank since 2021.
The Bees have comfortably avoided relegation battles in recent years and their highest earners are full-back Aaron Hickey (£70,000 per week) and centre-back Ben Mee (£55,000 per week).
For a team that is now consistently impressing in the top flight, to place so low is a testament to the great work behind the scenes.
18 Bournemouth £952,000 per week
Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen
Bournemouth are certainly punching above their weight under Andoni Iraola considering they are in the relegation zone when it comes to the wage table.
Those on the south coast have signed well, with impressive defenders Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen on just £30,000 per week. Meanwhile, the Cherries’ biggest earner is currently thought to be summer signing Evanilson, who takes in £85,000 a week.
17 Southampton £965,500 per week
Southampton's Paul Onuachu celebrates scoring their second goal with teammates
Bournemouth’s south coast rivals Southampton spend slightly more than them, but they haven’t had the same success on the pitch.
The Saints, who won promotion via the play-offs in 2024, made a number of signings, including Aaron Ramsdale, who is the top earner at St Mary’s on £120,000 per week.
It makes you wonder how different their finances will look if and when their relegation is confirmed later in the year, bar a miraculous from the club rooted to the bottom of the table at the time of writing.
16 Wolves £1,068,500 per week
On to teams who spend more than £1m per week on player wages, beginning with Wolves who spend more than £55m per year on salaries.
They managed to keep hold of star forward Matheus Cunha, with Pablo Sarabia and Goncalo Guedes also on big money in the Midlands, as the latter two both take home £90,000 per week.
15 Brighton & Hove Albion £1,138,500 per week
The Seagulls have been an ever-present figure in the Premier League since 2017 and are known as one of the best-run clubs in England.
Brighton have sold a number of players for huge money in recent years and currently top of their wage bill is Ferdi Kadioglu, who is on £87,500 per week.
The Turkey star replaced Lewis Dunk and Kaoru Mitoma as the club’s highest earner, with the Seagulls pair both on £80k a week – or just over £4m a year.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 10, 2024 14 Leicester City £1,258,000 per week
Leicester City won promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt in 2024 under Enzo Maresca, who then took over at Chelsea.
The Foxes had a huge wage bill in the Championship and managed to keep onto star striker Jamie Vardy, who picks up £140,000 per week at the King Power Stadium.
However, relegation may test their current wage structure, with the East Midlanders facing a difficult battle against the drop.
13 Nottingham Forest £1,278,000 per week
The Reds have finally settled into Premier League life and are flying high under Nuno Espirito Santo, with their free-spending days in the transfer market now seemingly behind them.
Forest chiefs still have a healthy wage list, though, with defender Nikola Milenkovic the only player picking up more than £100,000 per week at the City Ground. Whether performance-related bonuses will affect things next season remains to be seen!
12 Crystal Palace £1,294,500 per week
Since winning promotion back to the Premier League in 2013, Crystal Palace have regularly finished in mid-table, albeit with a few relegation battles thrown into the mix.
Under the management of Oliver Glasner, the Eagles also slot into mid-table in the Premier League wage list, with Daichi Kamada the top earner at Selhurst Park – the Japanese midfielder takes home £105,000 per week.
11 Fulham £1,315,500 per week
Rodrigo Muniz for Fulham.
Palace’s London rivals Fulham spend slightly more than the Eagles when it comes to wages, with Marco Silva re-establishing the Cottagers as a solid Premier League outfit.
Goalkeeper Bernd Leno picks up £130,000 per week, whereas loanee Reiss Nelson and striker Raul Jimenez take home £100,000 per week.
Interestingly, only Brentford spend more on their midfielders than the Whites, so the likes of Tom Cairney (£30k per week) may be feeling a little underappreciated at Craven Cottage.
It’s safe to say Chelsea certainly haven’t been afraid to splash the cash after the takeover of Todd Boehly back in May 2022, spending over £1.3b on new signings.
Such additions have allowed for Enzo Maresca to be an instant hit at Stamford Bridge, leading the Blues into the top four after his first 20 matches at the helm.
However, given their recent form in the transfer market, it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if they were to delve into the window and make another statement signing or two.
Chelsea managerEnzoMarescaapplauds fans after the match
The American has already signed two players for over £100m – showcasing his willingness to make additions to give whatever manager all the tools to be a success.
Various names have already been touted with a move to West London, furthering strengthening their ambitions of a return to a top-four spot in the Premier League come the end of May.
Chelsea January transfer update
A centre-back has been high up on Maresca’s shopping list since moving, with injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile could see him delve into the market for a new defender.
Marc Guehi has already been mentioned over a potential return to the Bridge, just a couple of years after departing to join Crystal Palace for £18m.

The Blues boss said he “likes” the Englishman, but wouldn’t be drawn on whether he’s set for a move in his pre-match press conference ahead of the FA Cup this weekend.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is another name recently linked with a big-money transfer, but Manchester United, Liverpool and PSG are also in the race for his services.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Napoli are holding out for €80m (£67m) for the winger this winter, potentially adding another dimension to Maresca’s already potent front line.
However, despite the interest in the Georgian attacker, the Blues could target an alternative to the 23-year-old, allowing them to sign their own version of a leading European star.
The Kvaratskhelia alternative who could be Chelsea’s own Vini Jr
Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior has rapidly developed into one of Europe’s leading attackers over the last couple of years.
The Brazilian winger came second in the recent Ballon d’Or ceremony, finishing behind Manchester City’s Rodri – highlighting his rapid rise to stardom under Carlo Ancelotti.
His figures from last season are nothing short of remarkable, scoring 24 times and registering nine assists in 39 games across all competitions, helping Madrid win yet another Champions League title.
However, the Blues could land their own version of the star in the form of English winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, with it being reported in the last week that scouts have been monitoring the Borussia Dortmund star who’s available for £50m this window.
The 20-year-old was once a part of the club’s academy setup, before moving to Reading and Manchester City, eventually making his name in the Bundesliga.
He’s scored five times in 15 league matches throughout 2024/25, leading to FBref ranking him as a similar player to Vini Jr based upon the figures he’s produced in this season’s Champions League, in particular.
When delving into the numbers, Bynoe-Gittens has matched or bettered the Brazilian in numerous key areas, highlighting what a superb addition he would be such the hierarchy conduct any transfer.
The Dortmund ace, who’s been labelled “one of a kind” by one analyst, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists, but has placed more shots on target per 90, subsequently having a higher success rate – evidently being more accurate with his efforts.
He’s also completed more take-ons per 90 and completed more of his attempted passes – handing the likes of Cole Palmer added opportunities to increase his own goalscoring tallies.

£50m may seem a hefty sum to splash out on a player who was already on the club’s books, but they would be signing a superb Kvaratskhelia alternative who has the ability to improve further in the years ahead.
Bynoe-Gittens’ comparison to Vini Jr is completely justified, with the Blues potentially landing a leading European talent to help lead the club’s quest to return to the summit of the Premier League.

During that time, young Ollie was often invited down to the training ground. He was given a first taste of what it is like to be a footballer, with shoulders being rubbed with some iconic figures – including a man that would go on to become England captain and Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer.
WHAT OLLIE RATHBONE SAID
Rathbone told the podcast: "Grew up in a football household – absolutely football mad. My dad started football at 16, he’s 66 now, he’s still in the game and has been in it for 50 years. That was the only sport for me, in my house.
"When he was at Everton, on some of the quiet days he’d take me in. I’d have a kickaround and meet the players. It was the best. I remember handing Wayne Rooney, who was on the verge of superstardom, a drink. They were glory days. I think it was a Lucozade."

Rathbone added on the other shenanigans that he got up to, which included taking the wheel of Scottish striker Ferguson’s car: "I can only vaguely remember that. He’d be driving and I’d be sat on his lap. I’d be doing the steering and he’d be doing the pedals.
"That was always good fun. He always used to give me 20 quid as well, which was a good part. I used to love going into Everton because I could play football all day and at the end there was 20 quid!"

The 33-year-old was set to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign, but he has ensured his spell at St James' Park will last at least eight years after his extension was announced on Thursday.

The Switzerland international has been key to the heart of the Magpies' defence this season, making 33 appearances in all competitions – only two of those were off the bench. He helped Eddie Howe's team to a Carabao Cup final victory against Liverpool last month and they are aiming to secure a place in next season's Champions League.
WHAT SCHAR SAID
Schar was delighted to commit to a new deal with the English club, saying: "I'm buzzing to extend my stay here. It's been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I'm really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club. It's my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I'm really glad to be continuing that. Schar and Co. are currently fifth in the Premier League and on a three-game winning run. They will be confident of making it four in a row when they take on struggling Leicester on Monday.
Hampshire 221 for 3 (Vince 100, Prest 52) beat Kent 167 for 8 (Denly 49, Wood 2-26, Ellis 2-26) by 54 runsJames Vince demolished Kent Spitfires with an obscene Vitality Blast century as Hampshire Hawks romped to a fifth straight victory.Hawks skipper Vince recorded his third T20 century with exactly 100 in 54 balls as he combined with Tom Prest – who impressed with his second format fifty – for a 128 stand for the second wicket. With Ross Whiteley’s six-ball 23, the hosts bashed their third-highest T20 score of 221 – something Spitfires never looked like chasing, eventually falling 54 runs short, in front of the largest Ageas Bowl crowd of the season. After four straight losses to start the Blast, Hampshire have got on a roll and moved into the top four for the first time. Holders Kent remain rooted to the bottom of the South Group with two wins from nine.Having been stuck in, Hampshire were only 32 for 1 – Ben McDermott skied Grant Stewart – at the end of the powerplay, and 12 of those came in the sixth over. That inauspicious start ramped up as Prest and Vince found their gears quickly. They started by using the expansive Ageas Bowl outfield to milk ones and twos, before accelerating into boundaries. The turning point from normal accumulation to intergalactic striking was Stewart’s third over which went for 25 runs. Prest started with a slog-swept six before Vince rounded it out with six, six, four. From then on, the Hawks flew. Only one over in the second half of the innings went for fewer than nine runs. Both Prest and Vince reached half-centuries in 34 balls as they became the first Hampshire duo to put on 100 together in a T20 versus Kent. After Vince had taken George Linde for 17, including a huge maximum over the leg side, Qais Ahmad ended the partnership on 128. Prest’s slog sweep only went up as he departed for a season-best 52.If Vince had noticed his partner had morphed into Joe Weatherley or not his steely demeanour and crisp ball-striking wasn’t affected. His second fifty came in 19 balls – making it 53 balls in total – and was coloured by three towering sixes into the leg side and five fours. He fell a ball later, which only brought Whiteley to the crease. He and Weatherley put on 40 in 10 balls to take Hawks miles past 200 – with 30 coming off the final over. The enormous score, albeit the third-highest around the country on Friday night, was only beaten in Hampshire’s record books by 249 at Derbyshire in 2017 and 225 versus Middlesex at home in 2006.Kent’s reply couldn’t have started worse as Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jordan Cox were both caught in the ring before the end of the third over. Sam Billings was bowled by James Fuller not long after, but Joe Denly and Alex Blake added 54 to momentarily fight back.Denly drilled to long off, Alex Blake to long-on, Linde to a sprawling mid-off, Jack Leaning was cleaned up and Qais was caught and bowled as Kent ended up on 167 for 8 and Hampshire cruised to the two points.
The frustration pervading Tyneside right now is indicative of the raised expectations at Newcastle United. Recent results against West Ham United and Crystal Palace, a defeat and a draw, have prevented the Toon from breaking into the European zone.
Newcastle scarcely lose on their home patch and fail to score even less, but goals are in short supply and the attacking synergy that Eddie Howe so finely crafted in the opening period of his reign is not quite there anymore.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe
Alexander Isak was forced off in the first half against Crystal Palace on Saturday, bitterly exacerbating Newcastle’s attacking troubles. Howe sought to allay concerns by claiming the Swede was forced off with a “contact injury.”
Frontal problems are not the only issue, with the engine room failing to purr at full throttle too. It’s frustrating, and similar to last season, when injury problems hampered Howe’s men. So, he might need to turn to the youthful Lewis Miley to help knock his midfield back into shape.
What makes Lewis Miley so special
Miley has yet to feature for Newcastle in the Premier League this season, though he has sat as an unused substitute across four of his club’s past six top-flight outings.
The 18-year-old talent suffered “a freak accident” to his metatarsal toward the end of pre-season and has been thrown to the sidelines after such an immense breakout campaign last year.
Last season was a difficult one for the Magpies, whose hard labours the year before were unable to be reaped as anticipated due to a catalogue of setbacks throughout the season.
Miley, though, stepped up in age-belying fashion. Racking up 28 appearances last year, scoring one goal and adding four assists, the teenage midfielder earned praise for his
Having signed a long-term deal with the St. James’ Park side in January, he’s gone from strength to strength and it’s frustrating that the rangy ace has been unable to build on such firm foundations over the past several months.
Bruno Guimaraes has described him as a “star,” while his manager has dubbed him an “unbelievable athlete.” Is it any surprise that he ranks among the top 8% of central midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 16% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, denoting his roundedness?
Newcastle’s academy has long failed to reach the level to produce a steady stream of youth quality across the past few decades, though that has changed with the PIF takeover.
Miley is the spearhead of this new era, endowed with a level of skill that could easily see him surpass the likes of Sean Longstaff.
However, there’s another young star soon to join the Magpies nest who may eclipse Miley: his name’s Vakhtang Salia.
In The Pipeline

Vakhtang Salia could be Newcastle's biggest talent
Last month, Newcastle signed 17-year-old Salia from top-level Georgian side Dinamo Tbilisi, loaning the dynamic forward back to the club for the remainder of the current campaign.
Newcastle midfielder Lewis Miley
Miley is the cream of the teenage crop on Tyneside at the moment, but that could indeed change when this crackling talent arrives on English shores, having scored six goals and provided two assists across Erovnuli Liga outings this term.
Like Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, he’s a versatile forward with properties that allow him to flourish both out on the left wing and in a more conventional striker’s role.

Given Newcastle’s struggles for goals, this could be a marvellous addition to Howe’s system, perhaps tackling two quandaries in alleviating Isak’s role as the chief goalscorer while also proving Gordon with some dynamic competition out on the flanks.
The Athletic have revealed that those close to Salia view him as Georgia’s best player within his age bracket by a country mile, and when joining a Newcastle youth set-up that continues to go from strength to strength, he may well explode and actually leapfrog the talented Miley.
The praise flows freely, and Newcastle might have secured a real coup with this one. Rival interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Arsenal and Manchester City magnifies his quality, with transfer insider Graeme Bailey also claiming that the youngster is “one of the best teenage prospects in the world.”
Might they have another Gordon on their hands here? So far, the winger has failed to match the same results that earned him Newcastle’s Player of the Season for 2023/24. Perhaps he’s struggling to carry the weight of being his side’s chief ball-carrying specialist, with little support from other members of the team.

Moreover, Howe has shuffled him across the pack with regularity. This is nothing new, but it’s only natural that frequent repositioning would threaten to stifle a forward’s form.
Salia is of course not ready for Premier League action but he’s demonstrating rapid signs of growth in his homeland and could make a marked improvement on Newcastle’s attack next season, supplementing the likes of Gordon with impactful foils.
Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon
He’s been heralded as the new version of Napoli superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and with such monstrous dribbling budding skills, might just prove to be the perfect addition to help the likes of Gordon in operating at their apex.

Sunderland fans would have been fearing another season in the Championship that resembled much of last campaign’s shambles, as the Black Cats’ inconsistencies got the better of them again in such an unforgiving division.
But, the Wearside outfit – heading into a hectic December fixture schedule – remain in and around the top spot in the unpredictable league, with Regis Le Bris’ appointment working wonders on the young and hungry sections of the Sunderland team.
Even when results haven’t always been going their way, the youthful Championship promotion candidates have managed to come out the other side stronger for it, with a number of key performers sticking out so far.
Key Sunderland performers this season
It’s not only the inexperienced heads that are excelling under the fresh managerial methods of Le Bris, with the likes of Patrick Roberts sticking out recently when being thrown back into the XI against Stoke City.
Before beating the Potters at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland had been winless in seven, but with the 27-year-old back on the right wing, a 2-1 victory was secured.
He would roll back the years with a daring display on the right channel, notching up three successful dribbles, alongside also assisting his side’s crucial winner late on.
Moving away from this important three points in isolation, both Luke O’Nien and Trai Hume have also shone as more seasoned members of the group across the course of the season to date, whilst both Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg continue to flourish as more raw figures still learning the ropes.
This straightforward finish from Rigg against Leeds United back in October was just one of three strikes he’s managed in league action, despite only being 17, whilst Bellingham – who is only two years his senior – has three assists next to his name alongside three goals.
But, there’s another youngster who is beginning to make waves in the senior mix away from those named, who could well be Sunderland’s next Jack Clarke if he continues to acclimatise well to the bright lights of the main team.
Sunderland's next Jack Clarke
There must be something in the water on Wearside when it comes to producing top-quality youngsters through the club’s youth system, with Tom Watson the next tipped for greatness.
Le Bris had been to made to rely on the 18-year-old on the left flank in recent weeks owing to his squad looking rather bare bones, which saw first-team regular Romaine Mundle pull up with a serious hamstring issue in November, leaving his options on the left looking depleted.
This would’ve been an understandably frustrating development for Le Bris to wrestle with, considering Mundle himself had taken to the pressure of replacing the mercurial Clarke well, with an impressive four goals and two assists picked up from 16 second-tier clashes.
Without him, the Frenchman would have to think on his feet and he has been rewarded with his boldness in throwing Watson into the first-team picture more regularly, based solely on his stunning recent performance against Stoke.
He would single-handedly guide his boyhood team to that pivotal three points, with his first very reminiscent of Clarke in his prime donning Sunderland red and white, having placed an effort coolly past the Potters ‘keeper after a pacey dart forward.
Watson’s second late on would send the Stadium of Light masses into raptures too, with this standout showing seeing EFL content creator Ryan Dilks even hail the teenager as another “phenomenal” ace off the Sunderland production line.

It will have felt like a long time coming for Watson to finally explode into life in the main team, when glancing at the crazy numbers he has managed at youth level in the past.
Unfortunately for the Black Cats, they did have to do without Watson last match at Swansea City, with it now coming to light that their homegrown ace could be out for up to two months owing to injury.
But – when he does return – he won’t want his stunning showing against Stoke to be just one fluke memorable display, as he aims to establish himself as a key part of the jigsaw under Le Bris in 2025.
