    WHAT SKINNER SAID

Earps is as ambitious as any player, with a European Championship win and World Cup final appearance under her belt, and domestic cup success with United may convince her to sign a new deal. Skinner has told on that subject: “That is a decision to be made later, it is not a conversation for now. I'm sure it does help but me and Mary have a great relationship. Of course I would love her to stay. She is an FA Cup winner.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ex-England star Fara Williams believes that tangible success will aid United’s efforts to get Earps to commit to fresh terms, saying: “It is so important that United now have a trophy, they have to use that now to nail down Mary Earps. She has tasted that success now and they need to keep her at the club and build the team around her. She is so vitally important. At any club now the goalkeeper position is crucial and who’s better than her?”

Earps joined United in 2019 and has taken in over 120 appearances for the club. An FA Cup triumph in 2024 is her first with the Red Devils, having finished as a runner-up in that competition 12 months ago, and she could be tempted to aid efforts to build a squad that can challenge for the WSL title.

Thiago Silva may have already played his last game for Chelsea. The defender was forced off injured against Aston Villa last time out and faces a battle to be fit for the team's final Premier League matches against Tottenham, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Bournemouth.

£113,000-per-week star now interested in joining Chelsea, seen as "perfect"

One club's star player is now interested in talks to join Chelsea, and he's seen as a "perfect" player for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino's plans to sign new Chelsea striker

The west Londoners have gone on a slightly upward trajectory of late, winning 4-1 away to Spurs on Monday last week before scoring four past Man City in a nail-biting 4-4 at Stamford Bridge over the weekend. Some of Pochettino's side now have time to rest up over the international break, with the Argentine, Todd Boehly and his co-sporting directors also gaining a minute to discuss transfer plans for January.

Despite scoring eight in their last two league games, it is still believed Chelsea want to sign a striker. Heavily criticised summer signing Nicolas Jackson has managed to get on the scoresheet far more often lately, but the former Villarreal star still looks a fair bit away from the finished article.

The Blues have been linked with Brentford star Ivan Toney as one option, with Napoli star Victor Osimhen coming as another.

“I like him [Palmer], I think he’s good but I don’t think he’s the answer,” said pundit Peter Crouch on TNT Sports (via TEAMtalk) recently, urging Chelsea to bring in a number nine.

“I think with Chelsea, as well as they did against Arsenal, I think they need a traditional No.9 – they’ve had Drogba as the main one in recent times but now they’ve been linked with Ivan Toney.

“If they can go out and get him, then that’d be absolutely perfect for them because what they have around that is perfect.”

While Toney possesses Premier League experience, Osimhen could come as a great option for Chelsea given just how excellent he's been for Napoli.

Osimhen "interested" in Chelsea talks

As per TEAMtalk, Chelsea may have been handed a boost in pursuit of the Nigerian, with Osimhen now "interested" in opening talks to join Pochettino.

Osimhen is more open to leaving Naples after a bizarre TikTok row with his club, opening the door for interested suitors like Chelsea to tempt him away.

Napoli strikerVictor Osimhen.

The 24-year-old, who's scored six goals in eight Serie A appearances this season, is on a reported £113,000-per-week (Salary Sport), but his wages won't be the issue. If Chelsea do manage to sign Osimhen, the report suggests he could cost as much as £120 million, but he's seen as the "perfect solution" to solve Pochettino's striker problem.

Osimhen's former manager, Walter Mazzarri, was one of the firs to notice Osimhen's quality in 2021 – and he has since gone on to become a superstar at Napoli.

“Osimhen is phenomenal because he runs alone at five players and gets through. If you look at genuine scoring opportunities, compared to the number Napoli created lately, I didn’t see that many,” Mazzarri told DAZN as quoted by Football Italia, after an Osimhen brace against Sampdoria.

“We intentionally kept a deep defensive line, because if we pushed higher like the other teams, we’d concede four or five like they did with Osimhen able to run into space. Obviously, Napoli had more possession and attacked more, but this was an intentional approach.”

"Watch out" – Arsenal want to sign "top, top" striker alongside Toney

Arsenal are apparently eyeing another "top, top" striker alongside Brentford star Ivan Toney, with Mikel Arteta's transfer plans beginning to take shape.

Arsenal's transfer links to new striker

Out of all the rumours circulating in regards to a potential new number nine, few names have been mentioned quite as much as Toney. While reports suggest the likes of Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is a target for Arsenal, it appears Brentford's star is dominating the headlines right now. Currently serving a ban for alleged gambling breaches, the Englishman is set to return mid-way through January next year, with Arteta and co eyeing a move for Toney as they seek to add more firepower.

Scoring 20 league goals last season, the Bees star is currently one of England's most clinical frontmen, and he's been showered with praise by his manager Thomas Frank for being a "remarkable" striker.

“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” Frank said.

"The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member."

Toney is also being chased by the likes of Chelsea; looking set to become one of the Premier League's hottest commodities as we approach the January window.

Arsenal also want Watkins

Despite their serious interest in Toney for 2024, it is believed another Premier League striker is attracting Edu's attention as well. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who has started the new season with real aplomb, is another name on their radar. That is according to journalist Chris Wheatley, who told ShotsTV (via The Boot Room) that Arsenal are big fans of Watkins.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

“Arsenal like Ivan Toney, but they also like lots of other forwards in that position, Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa is, I think, another one of those players," said the reporter.

"They do like him, but, at the moment, that’s as far as it goes. It’s one to watch out for in January as Ivan Toney will be pushing for a move away from Brentford."

The Englishman has already scored five goals and assisted five others in nine of his league starts this term, standing out as their statistical best-performer per match according to WhoScored. Watkins has also been praised by Michael Owen, who called the 27-year-old a "top, top" player.

"Ollie Watkins for me is a top, top player," said Owen last year.

"He came from Brentford and he scored a lot of goals there. But I do like him. I know that Steven Gerrard really likes him as well – Gerrard has had a bit of a mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong, he has a really good start to his managerial career. But just recently, it has been a bit of a mixed bag of results. However, that win against Southampton has got them really back on track."

Brathwaite, bad weather hold off Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka denied series-levelling win as 32.3 overs lost to weather on rainy final day in St Lucia

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando18-Jun-2018AFP

Sri Lanka had dismissed the stubborn Shai Hope soon after tea, giving themselves one final chance to surge to victory, but then the rains arrived, followed by bad light. In the end, West Indies drew the match with five wickets in hand, with 32.3 overs lost to the conditions. Perhaps Sri Lanka will rue the two hours they had spent off the field, protesting the ball-tampering charge on Saturday. Another 25 overs of play could have seen them scythe through the West Indies lower order, as they had in the first innings.Though the rain clouds sealed the draw, it was Kraigg Brathwaite who had set it all up. He was secure in defense and resolute in attitude right through the day, refusing to be shaken by Sri Lanka’s short-ball bursts, declining to be lured into loose drives, and capably defusing the spinners, who even on day five did not gain substantial turn off this pitch. Brathwaite’s innings soaked up 172 balls, moving to 58 not out during its course. Hope resisted best in his company. The two of them saw out 35.5 of the 60.3 overs Sri Lanka bowled at them in the day. Hope’s innings was split into two, because he had had to go off after being hit in the ribs by Lahiru Kumara, but he nevertheless played a vital hand, batting out 115 balls while scoring 39.Sri Lanka will likely be disappointed that even the overs that were available to them had proved insufficient. By lunch, they had had three wickets, and seemed set to surge quickly to victory, their quicks running hot. The first West Indies wickets had not taken long to come – Kasun Rajitha seaming a delivery away from left-hander Devon Smith to have him nick one to second slip in the fourth over of the innings, before moving one into Kieran Powell to have him caught at square leg. Before they had even got to double figures, West Indies were two down. Later in the session, after Hope had been struck and forced to exit the field, Roston Chase had his off stump uprooted by Suranga Lakmal, who set the batsman up with a succession of away-seamers, before sneaking a straight ball through his defences. Then came the main Brathwaite-Hope stand. Although obviously still sore, Hope negotiated a fresh short-ball examination with aplomb, even smacking a Lakmal bouncer for six in front of square. There were times when he played and missed, and others when he miscued shots, but the chances never went to hand. Brathwaite seemed much more in control, getting plenty of bat even to the balls that surprised him either by staying low, or leaping alarmingly. Inconsistent bounce had become a feature of this surface through the day. It was the second session, in which West Indies only lost the wicket of Shane Dowrich to the offspin of Akila Dananjaya, that the hosts really laid the groundwork for this result. Hope and Brathwaite put on 53 for the fifth wicket.Fourth ball after tea, Lakmal got a ball to cut in at Hope and had it ricochet off his elbow into the stumps, but although suddenly Sri Lanka were alive again, the weather soon intervened. First the rains washed out about 78 minutes of play. Although the teams took the field again, only 2.3 overs were possible before the umpires hauled them off again for bad light. The final delivery was proof that there was still life in this pitch – Jason Holder struck in the box by a ball that jagged in off a length. But before Sri Lanka even began bowling, Shannon Gabriel had imposed himself on the day again, as he has throughout these first two Tests. He blasted out the last two Sri Lanka wickets, to claim an exceptional match haul of 13 for 121 – the third best in West Indies’ storied bowling history. He struck Suranga Lakmal in front of the stumps before Sri Lanka had got off the mark for the day, then bowled Dananjaya twice, in his second over. The first of those dismissals was wrongly deemed illegitimate, umpire Ian Gould signalling a no-ball, even though a sliver of Gabriel’s boot had landed behind the line.

Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle agree new deal with "magnificent" star

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped a hugely significant piece of Newcastle United news regarding one specific player.

Who have Newcastle signed recently?

The Magpies have spent vast chunks of recent times languishing somewhere near the bottom of the Premier League table or even being relegated to the Championship, which has been unacceptable for such a huge club.

Thankfully, the good times have returned to St James' Park, however, with finances no longer an issue in the slightest, and Eddie Howe building a side that finished fourth in the league last season, qualifying for the Champions League in the process.

Not only has the manager created a strong unit, but he has also acquired the services of some top players, many of whom have become new heroes at Newcastle. The likes of new signings in recent years Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak have all made a big impression, among others, and you'd expect they will continue to be vital figures moving forward.

There is always going to be interest in some of those players from other big clubs, so tying down their future is absolutely essential. A new update suggests that that is very much the case with one individual.

Eddie Howe

Which Newcastle player could sign a new deal?

Taking to X, Romano claimed that Bruno Guimaraes has agreed a contract extension with Newcastle – one that will keep him at the club for the foreseeable future and includes a release clause of approximately £100m:

"EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle agree new deal with Bruno Guimaraes, here we go! It’s done — contract until June 2028. Key detail: understand the new deal will include release clause and it will be in the region of £100m. Bruno, so happy to extend as he loves the club."

This is fantastic news for Newcastle, considering what a huge impact Guimaraes has made at St James' ever since arriving from Lyon in January 2022. His arrival coincided with the Magpies becoming a force again, and his influence in the middle of the park has arguably been unrivalled at times.

At 25, the Brazilian is heading into his peak years, so to tie him down to a new contract that will see him remain at Newcastle into his 30s feels every bit as important as any new signing that comes along in the approaching transfer windows.

Magpies legend Alan Shearer is clearly a big fan of Guimaraes, calling him "absolutely magnificent" in the past. Granted, he is arguably yet to hit top form so far this season, but he has still averaged 1.8 tackles per game in the Premier League and enjoyed a 92.3% pass completion rate in the Champions League.

There is always the threat that one of Europe's biggest teams could trigger his release clause one day, following reported interest from Chelsea, assuming he keeps improving as a player and doesn't drop off, and while losing him would be an enormous blow, it is at least nice to know that he would only be allowed to leave for a massive transfer fee.
