  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old playmaker is on the verge of joining the Reds in what could become the most expensive transfer in British football history. Although negotiations are still ongoing between Liverpool and Leverkusen, reports indicate that a deal has been struck, with only the payment structure left to finalise.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Should the €150 million (£127m/$171m) deal be completed as expected, Wirtz’s move to Anfield would eclipse the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo, setting a new benchmark in Premier League transfer spending. He had a sensational campaign in Germany, scoring 16 goals and assisting 15 times, spurring the Merseyside club to break the bank for the Germany international.

  • WHAT ROBERTSON SAID

Speaking to , Robertson shared his thoughts on the player Liverpool fans hope to soon welcome to Merseyside.

"He was excellent against us (Scotland, at Euro 2024) I do remember that," he said.

"Obviously that game was extremely tough for us, but he was excellent, he was the one causing us problems in the half-space, running in behind, he can mix it up. I haven't seen too much of him but I have played against him and that was enough to see he was going to be a top player. We played Leverkusen in the Champions League this year as well and we dominated that game a bit more as well, so it was probably a bit more difficult for him, but certainly in the German team against us he was excellent.

"We're certainly linked with him, that's for sure! You can't miss it, you can't not see it. But if we get him through then an exciting talent is through the door. We've already got a lot of exciting talent in there. He's a right good player. He'll only help us, and if he does get through the door then we'll be excited to play with him."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Liverpool’s triumph in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign took many by surprise. Now, with the club crowned champions once more, Robertson acknowledges the shift in expectations heading into next season.

"I think that [pressure] is something that we're going to need to deal with," Robertson said. "The lads that have been there for a while. Me, Virgil, Mo and Ali, after we won the league the last time, we were kind of used to the pressure.

"For a lot of the lads that won it for the first time this season, and the lads coming in, they'll feel the pressure for the first time. We'll be favourites and there will certainly be more expectation on us than there was at the start of last season. That kind of suited us last season, we could go under the radar, get off to a good start, and by the time people took us seriously we were probably too far ahead!"

Georgia Adams fifty spearheads Vipers romp to Finals Day

Linsey Smith claims three wickets to limit winless Sunrisers

ECB Reporters Network07-Jun-2023Southern Vipers romped towards finals day of the Charlotte Edwards Cup when they defeated Sunrisers by five wickets at the 1st Central County Ground, Hove.Even without their England players they were far too strong for a Sunrisers side who have lost all seven of their matches in the competition. Chasing a modest target of 115 the Vipers got home with 5.1 overs to spare. They started off as if they wanted to get the runs in ten overs and lost two wickets in the third over. Nicole Faltum had another failure at the top of the order when she was bowled, sweeping, by Mady Villiers. And three balls later Ella McCaughan was caught at cow corner going for a maximum. But captain Georgia Adams led from the front with an unbeaten 63, with six fours and three sixes. She lost Georgia Elwiss, who was caught at midwicket for ten, and then Freya Kemp who was bowled for 12. And just before the end Emily Windsor was bowled for eight. But former opener Adams, despite being dropped on 19, batted with authority, reaching her fifty from only 28 deliveries and going on to steer her side to an emphatic victory. The Vipers went into their last group stage match with the comfortable knowledge that only heavy defeat would deny them a place at New Road, Worcester, where they will face Thunder. And, having to chosen to bowl, the only serious resistance came from Cordelia Griffith, who plundered 65 runs from 56 deliveries, with nine fours and a six.The Vipers were well on their way to victory after just five overs, having reduced Sunrisers to 18 for 4 in that time.Struggling Sunrisers had given the captaincy to the experienced South African Dane van Niekerk and given a debut to impressive medium pacer Esmae MacGregor, who took two wickets. But it wasn’t enough.Slow left-armer Linsey Smith opened the bowling for the Vipers and broke through with just the third delivery of the match when Alice Macleod, walking down the pitch, missed the ball and was comfortably stumped by Faltum. Sunrisers lost their second wicket to the first delivery of the third over when Smith straightened one and had van Niekerk lbw. And it was 5 for 3 when Villiers played too early to the last ball of Smith’s second over and skied to deep extra cover to make it three soft dismissals in as many overs. From the second ball of the fifth over wicket-keeper Amara Carr was run out by Alice Monaghan, going for an optimistic second run and the innings looked in ruins. But the Sunrisers can never be written off while Griffith is still there and once again the aggressive right-hander counter-attacked against a Vipers side who, as usual, rotated their bowlers at every opportunity. At the halfway stage of the innings – which had featured six Vipers bowlers – Sunrisers were 45 for 4.Grifffith powered to her fifty from 44 balls when she pulled Elwiss to the midwicket boundary. But with the last ball of the over Elwiss yorked Florence Miller for 20 to end the 65-run partnership. And, in essence, the innings was over in the 18th over when Griffith, aiming for the leg side, was caught at extra-cover.

A surprising move to Juventus was made in 2018, with CR7 also becoming a centurion for the Serie A giants. During his time in Turin, the five-time Ballon d’Or sported several haircuts – with one of those catching the eye of his eldest son.

The England international defender has confirmed that he will be severing ties with boyhood club Liverpool when his contract expires this summer. While he is heading towards free agency, it has been suggested that Real are ready to pay a small fee for Alexander-Arnold in order to acquire his services ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 26-year-old is ready for a new challenge after winning Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup honours at Anfield. He is aware of Real’s rich history when it comes to securing Ballons d'Or for the brightest of stars at Santiago Bernabeu.

  • WHAT FERNANDO MORIENTES SAID

Alexander-Arnold is being praised for setting the loftiest of targets, but has been told that he may be left disappointed. Ex-Liverpool and Real striker Fernando Morientes has told : “Using what I know historically about the Ballon d’Or, I see that as very complicated. If Trent Alexander Arnold has an exceptional season in every sense, it means he's attacking a lot, that he'll score a lot of goals.

“But if he scores a lot of goals, then Kylian Mbappe will score a lot of goals, Jude Bellingham will score a lot of goals, Vinicius will score a lot of goals.

“It seems to me that this Ballon d'Or is designed for midfielders and attackers. Very rarely do we see defenders or goalkeepers. In fact, Fabio Cannavaro comes to mind in our time and little else, and everything else is scoring midfielders and forwards or exceptional players.

“Can Alexander Arnold win the Ballon d'Or at Real Madrid? Yes. Is it very difficult? It is very difficult. I see it as almost impossible, but it's good that he comes with those expectations. This means he has very high ambitions.”

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

James withdrew from the England squad in between the Lionesses' two April fixtures against Belgium, having come off at half time in the first of those matches with a hamstring issue. Chelsea last week confirmed that the winger "will be out for a period of time" with the injury but did not specify how long for, raising concerns among England fans ahead of this summer's European Championships.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

James' absence has come at particularly tough timing for herself and Chelsea, too, as it meant the 23-year-old missed the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona on Sunday, which the Blues lost 4-1. As well as the second leg of that tie on Sunday, Bompastor's side have four Women's Super League outings remaining in their season, as well as an FA Cup final against Manchester United next month. It's unclear at this point if James will be able to be involved in any of these games.

  • WHAT BOMPASTOR SAID

On Tuesday, Bompastor admitted she couldn't give a timeline for James' return, but did say she wasn't "concerned" by the blow. "I think she'll come back quite well from that injury," she said. "It just takes time because hamstrings in women's football are sometimes quite big injuries, but I think Lauren will be fine. It's difficult to put a timeline [on it], because everyone is different and in the rehab I think everyone can react in a different way. But I'm not concerned about LJ. She will be back. It's just a question of time."

Bompastor was speaking in a press conference ahead of Chelsea's squad WSL clash with bottom side Crystal Palace on Wednesday, for which she confirmed the squad will be the same as the one that faced Barcelona. That is with the exception of centre-back Nathalie Bjorn, who will be "managed". Fortunately, that coincides with the return to fitness of Naomi Girma, who made her injury comeback at the weekend. "I don't think she will be fit enough to play 90, but she's fit enough to start the game, if she has to start," the Blues' boss added of the United States star.

That means that Sam Kerr is still not back from her ACL injury, either. The striker sustained the devastating blow in January of last year and has been working through a long rehab ever since. When Chelsea added her to their Champions League squad ahead of the knockout stages, fans were hopeful that it was a sign that the Australia international was almost ready to return. However, when asked if Kerr will play at all this season, Bompastor couldn't be sure.

"It's a difficult one for me to say, because again, everyone is different," she said. "Everyone reacts differently. So Sam is progressing in her rehab but I don't have enough elements to say if we will see her this season. Hopefully, yes, but it's difficult for me to say."

Inter Miami player ratings vs Columbus Crew: Wilfried Nancy’s side blink first in MLS battle of unbeatens, as Benjamin Cremaschi makes difference for Lionel Messi and Herons

The 20-year-old midfielder overshadowed the likes of both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the Eastern Conference showdown

A moment of brilliance from U.S. international Benjamin Cremaschi was all that separated the Columbus Crew and Inter Miami Saturday afternoon, as the came away with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Wilfried Nancy's men. In a battle between the two lone unbeaten MLS teams through Matchday 8, the South Beach side came out on top – despite a relatively dominant performance from Columbus.

Miami are now the last unbeaten team in the league, with Saturday marking the first loss of the campaign for the Crew – despite a record home crowd of 60,614.

A first-half diving header from Cremaschi, delivered off a stupendous cross from Marcelo Weigandt 30 minutes into the match, was the lone goal – despite numerous attempts from each side. The majority of the game was with the ball on the feet of the Crew – Nancy's team had 59.6 possession and Miami barely found themselves with it at their feet.

Two key opportunities for Columbus, a wide-open shot from Diego Rossi and a header from Jacen Russell-Rowe, were some of their best chances. But the Crew lacked a clinical final touch all match. They created chance after chance, but only managed a mere three shots on target despite 15 total shot attempts. Miami had just two on target off of six attempts.

In second half stoppage-time, Hungarian forward Daniel Gazdag had a fantastic chance to draw level, but his brilliantly-timed run ended with a wide-open shot slipping off his boot and dragging wide. The new $4.5M forward couldn't prove to be the difference.

Lionel Messi, meanwhile, was kept quiet all evening long by MLS veteran and standout midfielder Darlington Nagbe. The former U.S. international was the best performer on the pitch and barely let the Argentine out of his sight. Luis Suarez, too, lacked influence in the game.

A standout performance from Cremaschi at the No. 10 earned Miami three points, while some terrific defensive play from the likes of Sergio Busquets, Noah Allen and Gonzalo Lujan helped protect the lead.

  • Goalkeeper & Defense

    Oscar Ustari (6/10):

Very composed under pressure, played his line well and his positioning was spot-on throughout the match.

    Marcelo Weigandt (6/10):

Fantastic assist for Cremaschi's goal, but was exploited defensively on more than one occasion.

    Gonzalo Lujan (7/10):

Slid into a central role with ease. Looked composed and as if he belonged.

    Noah Allen (7/10):

Not a center-back by trade, he was very composed and rarely found himself committing a mistake. A very well-rounded performance.

    Jordi Alba (7/10):

So, so smart off the ball. Positioning throughout the evening was stellar, and he was one of Miami's best attacking threats.

    Midfield

    Yannick Bright (6/10):

Struggled to win or maintain possession in the middle of the park, but was constantly breaking up Columbus attacking opportunities.

    Sergio Busquets (7/10):

Tasked with playing a very defensive game, he held his own against Darlington Nagbe – which is all you can ask of him in that scenario. Good performance.

    Benjamin Cremaschi (8/10):

Incredible header for Miami's opener. Was terrific all match, and a physical presence that caught Columbus off guard.

    Attack

    Tadeo Allende (5/10):

A few decent chances, but he was never on the same page as Suarez or Messi. Lacked urgency and quick wit on the ball.

    Luis Suarez (4/10):

Was removed early in the second half after struggling to make any sort of impact. He struggled to keep up with the tempo of the match.

    Lionel Messi (5/10):

Relatively quiet, he had some truly impressive moments on the ball, but his usual impact was missing. An unusual showing from the maestro – a testament to those defending him.

    Subs & Manager

    Maxi Falcon (N/A):

Locked in once introduced. Played just 13 minutes, but helped secure the clean sheet.

    Telasco Segovia (6/10):

Relatively nonexistent despite logging 22 minutes + stoppage.

    Tomas Aviles (5/10):

Played as a midfielder, he was a liability once brought on to the game.

    Fafa Picault (N/A):

Helped stretch the game late on the counter, but was not on the pitch long enough to make a lasting impact.

    Javier Mascherano (6/10):

Defensively, Miami were resilient, composed and fantastic off the ball. However, they lacked an idea going forward, and struggled with maintaining any sort of possession beyond 10 or so passes. Mascherano couldn't figure out how to get by the Crew defense, or find a way to get Nagbe off of Messi. It's a massive result for Miami, but the Argentine was outcoached by Nancy.
