Freddie Wilde appointed as England white-ball analyst

England have appointed Freddie Wilde as their new men’s white-ball analyst, ahead of next month’s tour of Bangladesh, as a replacement for long-term incumbent Nathan Leamon. The move comes as part of a reshuffle within the ECB’s analysis department. Leamon, who has worked closely with England across all three formats and founded the data analytics company CricViz in 2015, is moving to the newly created role of Senior Data Scientist.Though only 28, Wilde has already amassed an impressive CV across franchise cricket. He is currently working with Desert Vipers in the ILT20 as their strategic recruitment analyst and is due to continue as a team analyst for Royal Challengers Bangalore, having joined the IPL franchise for the 2022 season. He has acted as a consultant for Rajasthan Royals, and has been operating as the lead analyst for Oval Invincibles since the start of the men’s Hundred in 2021. He has also had working relationships with both the England and Australia national teams.Prior to his career in analytics, Wilde – the son of veteran Sunday Times correspondent Simon – was a regular contributor to ESPNcricinfo’s county coverage, and has co-authored an award-winning book, Cricket 2.0: Inside the T20 Revolution, with Tim Wigmore.Wilde was invited to apply for the role by men’s director of cricket Rob Key and will leave CricViz, where he was head of performance analysis, after seven years. He will begin with the ECB at the start of February and immediately focus on England’s hopes of retaining the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.In an Instagram post, Wilde acknowledged that the role was “something of a dream job for me”, adding: “It’s an honour to be given the opportunity to work for a great team with the goal of defending the ODI [and] T20 World Cups.”Leamon, whose use of coded signals from the dressing-room made headlines during England’s T20I series in South Africa in 2020, welcomed the promotion of one of his protégées.”Having taken the tough decision to step away from touring with the England white-ball team, it’s a huge comfort to have found such a fantastic replacement,” he wrote on Twitter. “The role is in very good hands. Go well, Fred.”The limited-overs side, led by Jos Buttler, became holders of both ICC white-ball trophies after winning the T20 World Cup earlier this winter.

The French club reportedly want €40 million (£35m/$46m) for the 24-year-old, and Bournemouth have proposed an offer near their asking price.

This weekend’s scoreless draw between Mexico and Costa Rica was more than just a result – it was a symbolic face-off between two of Mexico’s most iconic coaches. Javier “Vasco” Aguirre, who guided the national team at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, went head-to-head with Miguel “Piojo” Herrera, the man who led at Brazil 2014. The matchup, staged at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, carried extra significance with both sides battling for top spot in Group A.

Thanks to the draw, Mexico clinched first place in the group and will now face Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals. Costa Rica, meanwhile, will take on tournament hosts United States – a matchup Herrera is confident his side can win.

After the match, Aguirre shared a light-hearted moment between the two coaches.

“I told Miguel, ‘See you at the World Cup.’ He answered, ‘No, see you in the Gold Cup final,'" Aguirre revealed.

Herrera remains true to himself – confident and bold – as he continues his tenure as Costa Rica’s head coach during the 2025 Gold Cup.

From the moment the draw placed his team in the same group as Mexico, Herrera exuded belief in his squad’s ability to beat Javier Aguirre’s side. Just days before the match, he even declared he’d throw a celebration if they pulled off the win. While Costa Rica didn’t get the victory, they also avoided defeat, and Herrera walked away satisfied with the goalless draw.

Up next is arguably his biggest test yet as Costa Rica manager – a quarterfinal clash against the United States. The USMNT entered the tournament surrounded by questions, but have since found their rhythm, winning all three of their group stage matches. Despite the challenge ahead, Herrera’s confidence hasn’t wavered. He remains convinced that his team will reach the final – and when they do, he plans to beat Mexico there.

Herrera struck a measured tone after learning his side will face the USMNT in the quarterfinals.

“No fireworks yet, but we’re calm – we had a solid group stage. We finished undefeated, but we know there’s plenty to improve. The next game will be even tougher," he said.

now face a high-stakes showdown against Mauricio Pochettino’s United States, who cruised through Group B with victories over Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti.

    WHAT SANTIAGO GIMENEZ SAID

Gimenez is aware that he and many others in Milan will need to raise their game next season, telling of the expectation that he is performing under: “Milan are a club that has won seven Champions Leagues and I don’t know how many other cups, so many. It’s one of the most important clubs in history and the fans are used to winning.

“They don’t settle for second place. Last season they came in second and Pulisic told me that people would crucify them anyway. Imagine now… it’s a very complicated situation for Milan.

“But that’s the measure with which Milan fans judge you. Being champion or not being champion, and this responsibility makes you a winner. It infects you, the people infect you. Next season is simply this: thinking about winning the Scudetto.”

Khawaja waits on 195 as rain washes out day three at the SCG

Usman Khawaja remains stuck on 195 not out, leaving Pat Cummins with a potentially tricky declaration call

Tristan Lavalette06-Jan-2023Rain might have thwarted Usman Khawaja’s bid for a maiden Test double-century, while Australia’s push for a series sweep over South Africa has been made harder after day three was washed out at the SCG.Khawaja remains stuck on his highest Test score of 195, while Matt Renshaw is 5 not out in his first Test match since 2018 having tested positive for Covid-19 before play on day one.Heavy downpours lashed Sydney and negated any chance of play to continue a run of rain-affected matches at the traditional SCG New Year’s Test. Forty-nine overs were lost to rain and bad light on the opening two days. There are 196 overs remaining in the Test and Sydney’s forecast is better for Saturday with only a small amount of rain tipped before sunny conditions on Sunday.Captain Pat Cummins will need to ponder overnight whether to declare before Khawaja has a chance to reach his double ton. Australia are keen on moving the match forward in their bid for a clean sweep of the series and to book a spot in the World Test Championship final in June.”Think it would be pretty harsh to bowl straightaway, don’t think that will happen,” Khawaja said. “Will be interesting to see how the game pans out from here, there’s a few options but with only two days remaining it narrows those options for us. Time is enemy at this stage. You’ve got to decide how you will use that time. A result is very unlikely, let’s be honest, but it’s still possible so try to do best you can.”South Africa’s batting coach, Justin Sammons, was unsure what they would do. “Think if Khawaja wasn’t on 190-odd then I’d say they’d declare straightaway but it depends on how they see that situation,” he said. “I’d imagine they’ll let him go out there and try to get that double and then declare. But they could say team first, in there straightaway.”Australia’s formidable innings was built on a 209-run second-wicket partnership between Khawaja and Steven Smith. It was their 10th century partnership from just 33 innings and highest stand overtaking their 188 against England at the SCG in 2018.Having moved past Sir Don Bradman on the career Test century list with his 30th ton, Smith fell for 104 while Marnus Labschagne and Travis Head contributed half-centuries.A beleaguered South Africa have been out of answers as the spotlight shines on under-pressure captain Dean Elgar, who has seemingly been reactionary and conservative with his tactics.Other than quick Anrich Nortje, who took the only two wickets to fall on day one, South Africa’s attack has failed to penetrate with spearhead Kagiso Rabada particularly struggling. He has 1 for 119 from 28 overs to continue his underwhelming series.South Africa need an unlikely victory to keep alive their slim chances of making the World Test Championship final although rain might help them avoid a series whitewash.Sydney’s forecast is better for Saturday with only a small amount of rain tipped before sunny conditions on Sunday. The third day of the SCG Test is dedicated to Australia great Glenn McGrath’s late wife, Jane, who died of breast cancer in 2008. But the traditional pre-match ceremony, which includes pink cap presentations to both teams, was moved to day four because of the weather.
