Chelsea plan six-year contract for ex-PSG star after verbal agreement

Chelsea are poised for a busy end to the summer window as they look to complete a plethora of deals, in terms of both incomings and outgoings at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues indirectly signed Julio Enciso as their latest acquisition, with the Paraguayan set to join Chelsea in 2026 following a year at sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1 – which is seen as a bargain £17 million deal for a player who’s already impressed in the Premier League.

Due to their complex arrangement with UEFA after being found guilty of breaching FFP rules, Chelsea must sell before they can buy right now.

The likes of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are expected to depart Stamford Bridge before the deadline on September 1, among others, and these exits will be crucial as Chelsea chase a double deal for Man United’s Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.

Chelsea are being forced to sell players who were in their Conference League squad last season so they can make room for the likes of Simons and Garnacho in their A-list Champions League squad, with sales of fringe men not counting towards their attempted ‘positive transfer balance’.

Unfortunately for Maresca, this means they need to find buyers for the likes of Nkunku and Jackson pretty quickly.

Chelsea set to finalise terms with Xavi Simons next week

In the meantime, both Garnacho and Simons are forced to wait patiently for their desired moves to London.

As per Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, sharing an exclusive bit of detail, Chelsea have planned a six-year contract for the former after verbally agreeing terms, and they’re set to finalise it in written form next week.

The ex-PSG playmaker has been a revelation for Leipzig since initially joining on loan at the start of 2023/2024, making his move permanent in January this year, but a switch to Chelsea appears imminent if BlueCo can secure departures first.

Arsenal targeting "extraordinary" Ajax attacker amid Piero Hincapie talks

Arsenal have their eyes on an “extraordinary” attacker amid their transfer talks for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

Andrea Berta has enjoyed an extremely busy and productive first summer window at the Emirates Stadium already, and Hincapie could be their latest in a long line of excellent additions for Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have quietly transformed their squad this summer through purposeful reinforcements, with Kepa Arrizabalaga between the sticks, Martín Zubimendi anchoring the midfield, Christian Nørgaard offering depth, Noni Madueke adding pace on the wing, Cristhian Mosquera bolstering the defence, Viktor Gyökeres adding a proven goal return and Eberechi Eze injecting serious creativity behind the striker as their new number 10 in place of the injured Kai Havertz.

While Berta’s spending has been lavish, with reports placing the total close to or over £270 million, it has been strategically spread across key positions rather than wasted on a single marquee name.

This approach has reinforced multiple areas across the pitch and allows for serious tactical flexibility, as well as responding to the inevitable injuries of a demanding season – which has already happened following Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka’s injuries last weekend.

While Saka is expected to miss four weeks, Odegaard could play against Liverpool on Sunday (football.london). Still, the north Londoners now have quality players to jump in their place, unlike last season.

Arsenal have covered every base: creativity, goals, stability and versatility. With the structure now there, Arteta’s side look ready and raring to take the final step and bring home a Premier League trophy after over two decades of waiting.

They’ve already made an excellent start to the campaign, scoring six goals in two games whilst conceding zero – beating both Man United and Leeds respectively as Arteta’s side gear up for a tough trip to Anfield.

Despite their flurry of transfer activity this summer, they may not be done there, with Arsenal in talks to sign Piero Hincapie after agreeing terms with the Ecuador international as a replacement for FC Porto-bound Jakub Kiwior.

As well as this, with Arsenal often conducting their transfer plans months in advance, the club are scouting future targets.

Arsenal targeting Ajax forward Oscar Gloukh

As per The Mail and journalist Simon Jones, Arsenal have their eyes on four young stars ahead of potential moves, and one of them is highly-rated Ajax forward Oscar Gloukh.

The Israel international has only just signed for Ajax this summer from RB Salzburg for around £12.5 million, but Arsenal are believed to be eyeing Gloukh as a potential future signing alongside the likes of Jon Martin (Real Sociedad), Arnau Martinez (Girona) and Caleb Yirenkyi (FC Nordsjælland).

The 21-year-old Gloukh is a particularly interesting name, as he’s been linked with a move to the Premier League before and already boasts a fantastic reputation.

Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squad set to close out 2025 with November friendly against Paraguay in San Antonio

Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squad will close out 2025 with a friendly against Paraguay at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Nov. 18, the Mexican Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday. Days earlier, El Tri will host Uruguay at the TSM Stadium in Torreón, completing their schedule of friendlies for the remainder of the year ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

  • AFP

    Teams have met 21 times

Paraguay is a familiar rival for Mexico, with the two national teams having played 21 times. El Tri holds the edge with 11 wins, while Paraguay has five victories, and there have been five draws. Their most recent clash came in 2022, when La Albirroja earned a 1-0 victory.

    El Tri’s calendar now complete

With the announcement, Mexico now has its full calendar locked in for the final two FIFA windows of 2025. In October, Aguirre’s side will face Colombia and Ecuador, while November will bring matchups against Uruguay and Paraguay. These games are expected to feature a squad much closer to what Aguirre envisions for the 2026 World Cup.

La Albirroja in World Cup for the ninth time

Paraguay, meanwhile, already secured qualification for the tournament earlier this month, marking their ninth appearance on the global stage. They will arrive led by Atlanta United forward Miguel Almirón, who spearheads the new generation of Paraguayan talent aiming to make an impact in North America.

Ranked 43rd in the FIFA standings, Paraguay will be looking to test themselves against a Mexico side sitting at No. 13. Despite the gap in rankings, the friendly is expected to be a meaningful test for both teams.

Litton to lead Bangladesh in West Indies T20I series

Litton Das has been appointed Bangladesh captain for an entire T20I series for the first time – he filled in once for Mahmudullah on the tour of New Zealand in April 2021 – for the three-match series to round off the ongoing all-format tour of the West Indies. There is a return for batting allrounder Shamim Hossain, who last played in a T20I – or any international match – in December 2023 in New Zealand. Shamim, 24, has had a run in the format but hasn’t quite broken through yet. In 14 T20I innings, he has 254 runs at a strike rate of 115.98, and a highest of 51, his only half-century.

December 16 – 1st T20I
December 18 – 2nd T20I

The somewhat left-field pick is that of Ripon Mondol, the tall 21-year-old medium-fast bowler who played three T20Is in October 2023, all at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, where he picked up four wickets as Bangladesh finished third. There is still no Najmul Hossain Shanto, the regular all-format captain, who is recovering after picking up a hamstring injury during the series against Afghanistan in November. There is also no update on Shakib Al Hasan’s availability, or future, in international cricket.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mehidy Hasan Miraz led Bangladesh in the two-Test series in the Caribbean, which was split 1-1, and is also their leader in the ongoing ODI series. From the last T20I squad that played in India in October, Towhid Hridoy (groin injury), Mustafizur Rahman (on a break after becoming a father) and Rakibul Hasan are missing, along with Mahmudullah, who has since retired from the format.Apart from Shamim and Mondal, fast bowler Hasan Mahmud, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, top-order batter Soumya Sarkar, who starred in Rangpur Riders’ Global Super League title win recently, and middle-order batter Afif Hossain have come in for this series.

Batting magic in Bengaluru as India threaten something special

Only one side has ever won a Test after scoring fewer than the 46 they did in the first innings of the match, but India were entertaining thoughts of doing it. They are onto something special in Bengaluru, and that through a sensational attacking approach with the bat. Don’t get it wrong, New Zealand were still ahead on cold numbers, but India have been pulling off unbelievable wins of late and a fourth-innings chase of even a 100 or so will not be easy.A day after being bowled out for 46 and falling behind by 136 runs, which then ballooned up to a total deficit of 356, India batted at well over five an over until the last few overs to finish 125 behind with seven of their wickets still in hand. New Zealand got themselves late fillip through Glenn Phillips, who snuck in an outside edge from Virat Kohli to the last ball of the day. When you get bowled out for 46 in the first innings, you need pretty much everything to go your way, but India kept marching on even when things didn’t go their way. Their testing bowling early in the day was interrupted by the quickest hundred-run stand against India in India, but their batters came out positive, putting New Zealand under immense pressure on what was now a flat pitch. The bowlers erred regularly, spread-out fields allowed easy runs, and a catch went down.Even the falling wickets failed to slow India down. When Yashasvi Jaiswal got out stumped, Rohit Sharma scored 16 off the next eight balls he played. Rohit’s freakish dismissal, played on off a dead defensive, brought out Sarfaraz Khan, who raced away to 23 off 16. Like Joe Root among the hectic England batters, Virat Kohli remained serene, but also skipped down the track to hit a six off Ajaz Patel almost as a nod to acknowledge the positive approach. However, this approach will be tested as a new batter will join Sarfaraz, unbeaten on 70, on the fourth morning.1:39

Manjrekar: Very rarely did Rachin defend against the spinners

A lot will also depend on whether Rishabh Pant’s movements will be hampered after he missed one-and-a-half day’s play because of a blow on the knee he had injured in his road accident. The good news for India is that he was padded up along with KL Rahul, and also that he removed the pads even without having to bat on day three. That was not the case in the morning. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj got India off to a relentless start, taking a wicket each in their five-over spells. The way Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry kept swinging at the ball didn’t inspire much confidence nor did it bring many runs. The first four wickets fell for 53, and India were now looking at a long tail.Rachin Ravindra, back to the city where his father was born, had other ideas. He and Tim Southee added 137 runs in a little over 20 overs, the second-quickest stand of 100 or more against India. Ravindra trusted Southee to an extent that he faced only the first three balls of the first 19 in the stand, which seemed to coax responsibility out of the seam bowler known for his six-hitting.Having started the day on 22 and having taken a boundary off the first ball he faced, a loosener from Siraj, Ravindra batted with urgency but also with respect. He scored 101 of his runs against spin because Bumrah and Siraj hardly gave him a loose ball. The first signs of any manufacturing of shots came 11 overs before the new ball became available when Ravindra charged Kuldeep Yadav and lofted him back over his head to get to his fifty. He then went over midwicket to take the lead past 200. In the same over, Southee got a half-volley, which he lofted for his first boundary.1:06

Stokes, McCullum, Gilchrist… Southee??

Just like that, the flood gates had opened. From waiting for the new ball, India went to delaying the new ball because it only became available close to lunch and they needed a breather to regroup. In the 12 overs leading up to the break, New Zealand scored 102 runs, Ravindra went from 48 off 86 to 104 off 125, and Southee hit three sixes to go past Virender Sehwag’s tally of 91. R Ashwin was taken down ruthlessly as he provided overpitched balls, his 16 overs going for 94 and one wicket off a reverse-sweep.Post lunch, the new ball kept going past the bat, but New Zealand managed to go past 400. India doubled down on their aggressive approach when they came out to bat, which did make sense on a flatter pitch. Jaiswal still needed some luck when the ball was new, but he also charged down the wicket to drill Matt Henry through mid-off for four. With the ball not seaming, Henry went too full looking for swing, giving Rohit early momentum in the innings. The run-rate kept growing progressively, but the attacking approach also comes with risk, which it appeared India were happy to live with. There were gasps when Jaiswal ran at Ajaz, and was stumped off a ball that didn’t turn, but this team was not going to give any mixed messages. This is the approach that had brought India a quick 72 runs and had spread the field, and they were happy to live with a dismissal doing this.Rohit’s immediate assault on Henry even as Kohli took 15 balls to get off the pair summed up India’s mindset. A drive for a four, a pull for a six, then a pull for a four brought up his fifty in just 59 balls.0:45

Manjrekar: Sarfaraz a 2024 version of Miandad

And then a wicket conjured itself. Rohit defended Ajaz with a dead bat, the ball hit the inner half of the bat and top spun onto the wicket after bouncing behind the crease. Rohit was not aware of where the ball was, which might suggest lack of awareness, but it is doubtful if he had enough time to kick it away.A delightful partnership of 136 followed. Sarfaraz was cheeky, playing the ball impossibly late or audaciously early. Spin was tackled with sweeps, pace was almost exclusively shown direction behind the wicket. At one point he was ducking William O’Rourke, but the ball nipped back at him, and he ramped it over the keeper just because he could. Kohli was more orthodox in skipping down and lofting Ajaz over long-off.Runs flowed, bowlers erred, a Henry spell of reverse swing was negotiated, Ajaz dropped Kohli at slip off Phillips, an odd choice for a slip fielder. Phillips is a wicketkeeper who has forced himself to become a utility offspinner to survive in international cricket. It seems he puts a lot more body into the ball than fingers, but he keeps using the angles and keeps trying. With the last ball of the day, he managed to get less turn than expected, and took the faintest of edges to lift New Zealand.

Jonathan Trott to take over as head coach of Pretoria Capitals

Jonathan Trott has been announced as the new head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, replacing Graham Ford who left the role last month.Trott is currently head coach of Afghanistan, a post he has held since 2022, and had his deal renewed in January to run through to the end of 2024. At this stage, there is uncertainty as to whether the 43-year-old will continue. With the SA20 taking place in January 2025, there is no real clash between the job and his international commitments. There is no confirmation yet on whether Trott will renew his contract which is due to expire in December. The Capitals are amid a broader shake-up after Ricky Ponting was let go ending his seven-year association with the Delhi franchise. Pretoria’s decision to move on from Ford came after a difficult second season in which they won just three matches and finished fifth. They were losing finalists in the competition’s first edition in 2023 after topping the table.Trott’s time at Afghanistan has been a success, with a drastic improvement in the team’s results at global events. Despite their talent in the shorter formats, they had won just one match in an ICC tournament – both 50-over and T20 – before beating Australia, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Bangladesh in the last nine months across the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20I World Cups. They made it through to the semi-finals of the latter, losing to South Africa.Trott may also be in consideration for England’s limited-overs job but is thought to be an outside bet with a decision to be made in the coming days on the future of incumbent head coach Matthew Mott. Trott earned 127 caps for England, and has previously coached on the pathway, both for the Under-19 and Lions teams. He is currently working as assistant coach of Trent Rockets in the men’s Hundred.

Birmingham could beat Wrexham to signing "outstanding" Davies upgrade

For as much as Jay Stansfield stole most of the headlines with his goalscoring heroics, Birmingham City’s title-winning triumph in League One last season was based on an extremely tough-to-pass defence.

The Blues only shipped 31 goals across the duration of their very successful 46-game campaign, away from Stansfield chipping in with 19 league strikes to contribute to Chris Davies’ men bagging a mammoth 84 goals.

An unsung hero at the back that went somewhat under the radar was loan titan Ben Davies, with the now ex-Birmingham number 25 instantly fitting into his new surroundings to live up to his EFL veteran status.

Davies' standout loan spell at Birmingham

Before returning to the EFL with the Blues, Davies had already notched up many an appearance all across the Championship, League One, and League Two.

In total, the formidable 29-year-old has now tallied up 281 appearances up and down the various challenging leagues, with his spell at Birmingham perhaps his most memorable stint to date.

He would go on to form an intimidating partnership with Christoph Klarer at the very heart of the Blues defence, leading to the imposing pair collecting a combined 38 clean sheets in league action.

Offering up a goal and assist across his impressive 35 league games too, it wasn’t a great shock to see reports linking Birmingham with a permanent move for the former Liverpool defender when the season was over and done with.

But, all that talk has now seemingly hushed now, with his new Gers boss in Russell Martin perhaps fancying giving him more concrete chances at Ibrox moving forward.

This could mean Birmingham have to seek out alternative targets.

Birmingham's Davies alternative

After all, as Birmingham rises the divisions, the more out there and ambitious their signings can be.

A report from this month saw them linked with a move for Premier League regular Craig Dawson, with football journalist Alan Nixon reporting that both Wrexham and Derby County are also locked into a battle to land the vastly experienced 35-year-old.

Whilst Dawson has seen his game-time severely deplete under Vitor Pereira’s Wolverhampton Wanderers reign, it’s very clear that the soon-to-be free agent would still be a rock-solid option for Wolves’ near neighbours in Birmingham.

A fierce competitor, he notably won 4.4 duels per game during the 2023/24 season in the Premier League when handed 25 top-flight outings.

Moreover, away from his colossal collection of 303 Premier League appearances impressing those looking in, the ex-West Ham United centre-back also possesses quite the reputation for being a fierce defensive body in the EFL, much like Davies.

His last season at the daunting level saw him battle away valiantly for another of Birmingham’s cross-city rivals in West Brom, winning a hefty 6.6 duels per match across his 41 league appearances while successfully completing 80% of his passes.

To add context, Davies fell just short of Dawson’s mighty duels won count last season when amassing 6.3 on average, with his average when last competing in the Championship coming in at a lesser 4.4 too.

Lauded as “outstanding” when still on the books of the Hammers by football journalist Matt Law, any move for Davies falling through would be instantly forgotten about if the newly promoted outfit were able to win the dependable 35-year-old.

With the bonus of 25 goals next to his name too during his EFL playing days, Dawson might well be a statement addition that allows Birmingham to compete up a division and even dream of a Premier League stay in the near future.
