Worth less than Scales: Rodgers must axe Celtic's "fantastic" star

Celtic ran out in front of their own supporters at Parkhead for the first time since they won the Scottish Premiership title when they faced Hibernian on Saturday.

The Hoops clinched the league title with a 5-0 win over Dundee United away from home at the end of last month, before they travelled across Glasgow to play out a 1-1 draw with their rivals last weekend.

It did, however, look as though Hibs were going to spoil the party when they took the lead at Celtic Park thanks to an opening goal from Martin Boyle in the 25th minute.

The Premiership champions, though, bounced back and led before the break after goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah turned the game around, before Reo Hatate added a third in the second 45.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, who has suffered with hamstring injuries this season, was given the weekend off by Brendan Rodgers, in order to manage his minutes in the final few weeks of the season.

That opened up a position at the heart of the defence and the Northern Irish head coach opted to go with Auston Trusty next to Liam Scales.

Scales and Trusty's performances for Celtic this season

The Hoops reportedly paid a fee of £5m to sign Trusty from English side Sheffield United in the summer transfer window last year to bolster their left-sided centre-back options.

The USA international and Scales have competed for the starting berth next to Carter-Vickers at centre-back, but they have also had to play alongside each other at times when the former Spurs man has been unavailable, like on Saturday.

Although Celtic won the match comfortably in the end, Trusty, who lost 100% of his ground duels, had a moment to forget when his poor attempted clearance dropped straight to Boyle to find the back of the net.

Unfortunately, errors have been too common for the former Arsenal defender in the Premiership this season since his £5m move to Parkhead, particularly in comparison to Scales and Carter-Vickers.

As you can see in the table above, Trusty has made more errors that have led to shots, more errors that have led to goals, and been dribbled past more times, despite playing fewer matches than the other two centre-backs.

This also shows that Scales, who was unlucky to give a penalty away at Ross County, has been more reliable than the American dud in the Premiership.

This is despite the former Aberdeen loanee being worth just £3m, as per Transfermarkt, which is £2m less than the fee the club paid Sheffield United for the other left-footed defender.

The Ireland international has not made as many errors as the former Premier League flop and that may be why Rodgers has preferred him over Trusty alongside Carter-Vickers in recent weeks.

However, the Celtic boss did still opt to select Trusty on the right side of the defence over Maik Nawrocki, a naturally right-footed player, and the Hoops must ruthlessly ditch the Polish centre-back this summer as a result of his lack of minutes on the pitch this season.

Why Celtic should cash in on Maik Nawrocki

The 24-year-old defender, whose Transfermarkt value is just £1.7m, was an unused substitute once again against Hibernian, as he failed to add to his paltry two appearances in the Premiership in the 2024/25 campaign.

When questioned about Nawrocki’s lack of game time in March, Rodgers explained that it was because he prefers to have left-footed players on the left. He said: “I do always prefer where I can a left-footed centre-half on that side, in all honesty, because that allows you to get through the pitch quicker and have more speed playing forward.”

However, Carter-Vickers was unavailable against Hibernian and the manager still opted for Trusty on the right side, despite him being a naturally left-footed player who has the same problems that Nawrocki has playing out on his weaker side.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

This suggests that the former Legia Warsaw star’s lack of game time goes beyond Rodgers’ concerns about which side of the centre-back pairing he plays, as he was unwilling to give him minutes against Hibernian with no other right-footed centre-backs available and the title already wrapped up.

The most frustrating part of this for Nawrocki, however, may be that this has come after his impressive performances in the Premiership in his two outings in March.

All the way back in January of last year, Nawrocki told reporters that he was prepared for his moment to shine in a Celtic shirt, and that moment eventually came in March of this year when Trusty and Scales were injured and he was named in the XI against Rangers and Hearts.

As you can see in the table above, the Polish star took his chances to impress with dominant and reliable defensive displays in those two matches, which led to pundit Chris Sutton hailing him as “fantastic”.

However, Nawrocki has been an unused substitute for four matches, missed out on the matchday squad twice, and not played a single minute of football since the win and clean sheet against Hearts.

As aforementioned, his Transfermarkt value now stands at just £1.7m. This means that he is worth less than Scales (£3m) and Trusty (bought for £5m), whilst also being the least used centre-back option, with just two league outings.

Therefore, Celtic must brutally axe the 24-year-old outcast from the squad in the upcoming summer transfer window because he is a depreciating asset who is not getting enough minutes on the pitch.

Celtic could sign £11m star who'd be their best striker since Edouard

ByDan Emery May 8, 2025

Rodgers has shown that he is not ready to trust Nawrocki ahead of Scales or Trusty and it is now down to the board to find a team that is willing to snap him up so they can recoup some money for his services ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Leeds star who earns more than Tanaka must never play for the club again

Eight more points. That is the maximum number of points that Leeds United need from their last four matches to guarantee their place in the Premier League next season, although seven would likely be enough due to their superior goal difference.

The Whites are five points clear of Sheffield United, who still have Burnley to play, in the Championship and are closing in on an automatic promotion place.

Daniel Farke’s side took another step towards promotion with their 2-1 win over Preston North End at Elland Road on Saturday, thanks to goals from Manor Solomon and Jayden Bogle.

With promotion on the horizon, the powers that be will be assessing the squad and preparing to build a team that can compete in the Premier League, and one player who must be kept is Ao Tanaka.

Why Leeds must keep Ao Tanaka

The Japan international, who joined from Fortuna Dusseldorf last summer, has been an exceptional performer in the Championship this season and should remain a key player next term.

Tanaka has shown his quality on the ball, with four goals and a pass completion rate of 90%, in midfield to control and dictate matches for the Whites.

He has also provided defensive strength, with 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game and a duel success rate of 56%, to protect his own goal.

Wage Burners

Football FanCast’s Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

Per Capology, Tanaka currently earns £25k-per-week and has offered fantastic value for money in midfield when you consider that Illan Meslier is on £30k-per-week, and the French dud must never play for the club again.

Why Illan Meslier must never play for Leeds again

The 25-year-old flop was finally dropped by Farke after his third error that directly led to a goal this season against Swansea in a 2-2 draw last month, after pundit Jeff Stelling claimed that the player’s “confidence is shot” as a result of his mistakes.

Meslier played the first 39 matches of the Championship campaign and made three errors that directly led to goals and conceded 2.73 more than expected based on the xG of the shots against him.

As you can see in the table above, the French dud has consistently let Leeds down at Championship level by underperforming as a shot-stopper and making too many errors.

Karl Darlow, meanwhile, has prevented 0.56 goals and not made a single direct error in his three appearances since coming into the team against Luton, providing an assured pair of hands between the sticks.

Meslier’s current contract at Elland Road is due to expire in the summer of 2026 and that makes this summer a big one for Leeds, because they either have to commit to him with a new deal or cash in on him before they lose the goalkeeper for nothing next year.

Scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Leeds will “listen to offers” for the former Lorient gem, which suggests that he could be on his way out of Yorkshire ahead of next season.

With this in mind, Meslier should never play for Leeds again because Darlow has proven that he has the quality needed to help push them over the line in the final four matches of the current campaign.

Therefore, the English stopper should remain in goal for the rest of this season before Meslier is sold, and replaced, in the summer transfer window which would mean that the French dud’s last game for the club will end up being the 2-2 draw with Swansea last month.

Not Caprile: Leeds had "incredible" Meslier upgrade & let him leave for £0

Leeds had an incredible replacement for Illan Meslier and let him leave for nothing.

ByDan Emery Apr 4, 2025

Whilst it would be a sad way for him to end his Leeds career, the 25-year-old liability’s performances this season suggest that it would be the right decision, as he has not provided value for money with his £30k-per-week wages – earning more than the impressive Tanaka despite struggling throughout the campaign.

Rookie Aniket Verma and his incredible six sense

On evidence of his early displays for SRH, Aniket appears to have both bravery and incredible ability to back the high-risk methods

Karthik Krishnaswamy30-Mar-2025What’s a good length for a T20 spinner? Himanish Ganjoo and Sidharth Monga dived deep into data to try and answer this question last year, and came away with two significant findings: A, the stock length for spinners has become shorter with time; and B, this has been accompanied by a significant uptick in speeds. In the IPL, spinners are increasingly looking to bowl quick, flat balls that pitch in the 5-7m (distance from the stumps) band and finish somewhere around the top of the stumps. The traditional good length for spinners, which tends to bring batters forward without letting them drive, is usually in the 4-5m band, and the defensive good length in the 5-6m band. Given how flat pitches now tend to be, and the power and range of the best T20 hitters down the ground, spinners increasingly prefer to err on the short rather than the full side, in the belief that this, combined with the high pace they tend to bowl at, should narrow down most batters’ boundary options at most times.Related

Starc's 'out of the box' ways prove too good for Head

Axar Patel is the archetypal modern T20 spinner. His speeds seldom drop below 90kph, and often tend to be quicker than 95kph. He bowls into the pitch and attacks the top of the stumps. With his speed, he looks to deny batters the chance to get down the pitch and hit him straight, and with his line he looks to make the sweep a dangerous option. And unless he errs really short, he isn’t easy to pull either, particularly if you’re a right-hand batter cramped for room by the angle he creates with his wide release. All this is to say that Aniket Verma’s pulled six off Axar in the eighth over of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) innings against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday afternoon was no ordinary pulled six. The ball was marginally short of good length, pitching 6.57m from the stumps, and delivered at 88.87kph. It was angling exaggeratedly into the batter in that typically Axar manner and continued to do so after pitching; it would have likely ended up marginally above and outside the line of leg stump.Aniket Verma scored his maiden IPL fifty against Delhi Capitals•BCCINow this was marginally short of good length, and the pace was slow by Axar’s standards, though it was by no means slow in absolute terms. It gave you just enough time and just enough distance from the pitch of the ball to be able to pull it, but you needed remarkable speed of eye and foot to do so.Aniket showed just those qualities, rocking back in a flash and swivelling powerfully through the hips to send the ball sailing over the square leg boundary. His front foot swung so far round that it ended up well behind his back foot, and his back knee almost touched the ground, so low did his centre of gravity sink to be able to create elevation. The man at the other end, Heinrich Klaasen, is one of the masters of this shot. He might have been proud to have played it.And the circumstances around the shot made it even more remarkable. Aniket had come in at 25 for 3, which had soon become 37 for 4. He had responded as if none of those things mattered, and nothing existed outside him, the ball, and a pressing need to dismiss it from his presence. This was his second six, and fourth boundary, in 14 balls, and he was now batting on 26.5:41

Do SRH’s batters lack a plan B?

What he did off the next ball was even better, because Axar corrected his length and pace as well as anyone could. He went fuller, but only just, landing 6m from the stumps. It was the shortest edge of the good-length area. He went quicker, to 95.61kph.This sort of ball is hard to hit anywhere, but perhaps hardest to hit down the ground. Not if you’re Aniket, though. He showed once again that lightning judgment of length and fleetness of foot, this time to advance down the pitch. He didn’t reach the pitch of the ball, but it didn’t matter: he simply punched through the line, without a whole lot of follow-through, and sent the ball one-bounce into the sightscreen.Aniket had come into this IPL with just one senior appearance behind him – a T20 game in which he made a first-ball duck – with his most eye-catching performances having come at Under-23 level or in the Madhya Pradesh League. What all those performances had in common was relentless six-hitting, but it remained to be seen, when SRH signed him for his base price, whether he could do it against IPL-quality bowling.Three innings into his debut season, it’s probably safe to say he can. By the time he was done with Sunday’s 41-ball 74, Aniket had faced 56 balls in the IPL and hit 12 of them over the boundary. Only Nicholas Pooran (13) has hit more sixes so far in IPL 2025.And no uncapped batter has taken fewer balls to hit 12 IPL sixes than Aniket. He has looked particularly frightening against spin, hitting 11 sixes in 37 balls and striking at 237.83, but his pace numbers have been pretty good too, from a limited sample size: 29 runs at a strike rate of 145.00.ESPNcricinfo LtdBeing at this SRH team has certainly been an enabling factor. They stayed true to their philosophy despite being 37 for 4 against DC, and they did the same in their previous game against Lucknow Super Giants as well, when they slipped to 15 for 2. In that match, Aniket came in at 110 for 4 and hit five sixes in a 13-ball 36.”Coming into the tournament, [he was] not super well-known, but everyone was super impressed with how he kind of entered the tournament, in the lead-up games and just that young freedom you see,” SRH captain Pat Cummins said after Sunday’s game. “Even when there’s a few quick wickets lost, he still has the bravery to go and hit the next ball for six, so he was fantastic. He was the guy that kind of gave us half a chance.”There will be a lot of debate around the wisdom of SRH’s approach in matches like their two recent defeats. It’s unlikely that debate will enter the SRH dressing room, however. If Aniket gave them half a chance, in their captain’s words, it was because he didn’t let the situation play on his mind. And if he appeared to be more selective with his hitting than his colleagues, or in greater control of it, it may have been thanks to the deceptive aura that can surround a successful innings, which can make viewers forget moments like the half-chance he offered on 6, when he skewed a leading edge high in the air over the covers only for Abishek Porel to put it down.On this day, Aniket happened to be the SRH batter who had luck go his way. On other days, it’ll be someone else. It’s this pooling of risk that makes a method like SRH’s viable, especially when the Impact Player allows them to bat someone of Wiaan Mulder’s ability at No. 9 on off days like this one. This approach demands bravery from batters, to use the word Cummins employed. What often goes without saying is that it demands incredible ability too. On the evidence of his early displays, Aniket appears to have both.

A hard-fought home-team win to savour

A fan watches his side go head to head with Australia and comes away with renewed admiration for them

Sudhindra Prasad09-Oct-2023Choice of game
From 3-2-1 to 9-1-1 to 11-2-1 – that’s how my CWC game attendance planning has progressed in recent World Cups. This year, besides the nine India group games, I plan to be at two matches in my hometown, Bangalore, plus both semi-finals and the final. I did investigate the possibility of matching my 2022 FIFA World Cup haul of 22 matches, but the extensive travel that would call for, in addition to a day off work for each game, added up to an impossible amount of time away from my corporate job.Team supported
The home team. My first memories (via TV) of World Cup cricket were of the India vs Australia game in Madras in 1987, and the everlasting image from that game for me is of the dust-streaked trousers of Allan Border’s Australia team, who scrapped hard to earn that one-run win. To watch those two teams match-up again at the Chepauk, and for me to be there in person this time around, 36 years later, rekindled some bittersweet memories.Key performer
This was clearly Ravindra Jadeja. His dismissals of the three dangermen in the Australia line-up changed the game altogether. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne had the skills to play through on this tough wicket and set up a challenging chase for India. But Jadeja’s guile got the better of them. As I watched from behind the bowler’s arm, the Steve Smith dismissal had quite the magical spinner’s touch. The Chennai crowd screamed their throats out in appreciation of their favourite (adopted) son.Wow moment
Mitchell Marsh’s dismissal. This dismissal had it all. Subtle away movement from Jasprit Bumrah induced the edge and Virat Kohli took a screamer at first slip. It looked extremely impressive in real time, from the batter’s end. This dismissal set the tempo and will have done much to ease the big-tournament nerves for India, if they had any.The scorcher
Chennai was hot to start with, but an over by Bumrah, the 33rd in the first innings, raised the temperature. He came steaming in, with a packed off-side field and just missed Cameron Green’s outside edge first ball, eliciting loud ooohs from the crowd. The next four deliveries were played respectfully, maybe even tentatively, and one of them allowed a run off a misfield. The over ended like it began, and this time Glenn Maxwell was the one lucky to not edge it to KL Rahul. An Indian fast bowler almost toying with proper Aussie batters, with sheer pace and some movement – it made for a great sign of India’s fast-bowling prowess. One thing I would have changed
I would have sent in Rahul instead of Shreyas Iyer at No. 4. Pitches and situations like this need proper technique and an ability to put one’s head down and grind. While Shreyas is just as talented, his high-risk aggression might be better put to use when the team score is stable and ready for a lift in tempo.Crowd meter
The stands were full with India supporters almost exclusively (although David Warner got some love for his Indian dance moves) and there weren’t any Aussie flags around. The fans were mostly dressed in various India replica jerseys and this added quite a blue tinge to all the stands. The loudest cheer was for the crowd favourite, Kohli, when he departed after his dismissal (although the cheer for Marsh’s dropped catch off Kohli, came rather close). The stadium DJ on the day he kept the crowd going with songs, dances, chants and Mexican waves.Catch of the day
The six hit by Pat Cummins off a slow turner from Kuldeep. A member of the ground crew caught it just outside the rope and extended his arms out, as if to say, ‘How easy was that?’ Some fans in the stands behind him gave a standing ovation for the effort. The Mitchell Marsh drop was one of the loudest crowd moments of the night•ICC/Getty ImagesShot of the day
In the 36th over Rahul hit a straight drive for four and just at the point of contact, he slightly changed the angle of the bat to send it between the bowler and mid-on. It was an indicator of his sound shot judgement and his mental clarity. Ominous signs for the oppositions in the games to come, if you ask me.Songs and chants
The KL Rahul song, which we debuted during the 2019 World Cup, was in demand and came up for encores. Towards the end of R Ashwin’s spell in his last World Cup game at his home ground, it was satisfying to repeat a chant that was first used during the 2011 India-West Indies World Cup game. The crowd gleefully joined in.”, Ashwin ” [“Ashwin is anything but ordinary”, roughly].Brain drain
Historically the crowd at Chepauk has been known as knowledgeable. Today, though, the crowd and the DJ/presenter did not initially seem to pick up on any of the three partnership milestones between Rahul and Kohli. The cheers eventually came along a few deliveries and runs later, once the DJ announced it. This was very odd. I don’t know if the absence of traditional ticketing options leaves out the less than tech-savvy, but knowledgeable, fans out.Marks out of 10
9 A low-scoring thriller is always good for cricket. India’s chase was gripping, edge-of-the-seat stuff and each run was counted down. Before this game, I wasn’t sure if this Indian team had the wherewithal to overcome early losses. The start of the India innings was reminiscent of the 2017 Champions Trophy final (6 for 2) and the 2019 World Cup semi-final (5 for 3), but India’s fightback was outstanding and almost brought to mind an era when they had Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina bossing such chases by controlling the middle order.I think this Indian team will go a long way and I tip India to be in the final on November 19. See you there!

Celtic in line to replace CCV with giant youngster whose "ceiling is so high"

Celtic have encountered their latest injury problem under Brendan Rodgers and will now be tasked with replacing one of their most influential figures ahead of a key stretch of matches.

Brendan Rodgers confirms Cameron Carter-Vickers out of Celtic contention

On Thursday night, the Bhoys’ 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz came as a morale-boosting result that sparked their Europa League campaign into life. However, it appears the positive outcome came at a cost after Alistair Johnston and Kelechi Iheanacho were hauled off injured.

Speaking ahead of Celtic’s trip to face Heart of Midlothian on Sunday in a crunch Scottish Premiership encounter, Rodgers confirmed that Cameron Carter-Vickers will be sidelined for between three to five months after his noticable discomfort after the final whistle due to an achilles problem.

He told Sky Sports: “One that is obviously not mentioned is Cameron Carter-Vickers. He looks like he’s done his Achilles, which could be anywhere between three and five months. We just await confirmation of that, but it’s not great news. We’ll see where that one goes.”

Later, he added: “Cam’s been a very important member of the squad, of course, he’s been a great centre-half for the club, but what I always think it does is it opens the door for someone else. That opportunity came to Liam Scales and he’s been brilliant during my time here and you seen his performance last night, he was so good, and it’ll open the door for someone else to come in and look to perform.”

Brendan Rodgers' ready-made Celtic replacement for Carter-Vickers

Undoubtedly, there will be panic after losing a defender of Carter-Vickers’ calibre, especially given his excellent contribution to Celtic’s success over the last few years. This news further compounds their injury worries amid Daizen Maeda’s absence.

However, there may already be evidence on who Rodgers could turn to in the face of his rearguard options dwindling. Earning his first-team breakthrough under the Irishman, Dane Murray could be the man drafted in to answer the call as opposed to the likes of Auston Trusty, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey or Hayato Inamura.

Standing at 6 foot 4, the Scotland Under-21 international has scored once in four appearances this campaign, coming against Falkirk, and Rodgers has previously lavished praise on his ball-playing abilities, claiming they stack up against the top players from what he has witnessed.

He said: “It’s great for him because he’s a great boy. He’s got a lot of potential. And I think over the next 12 to 18 months, he’s going to really grow. His ceiling is so high.

“There are areas of the game he needs to clearly work on. But he’s 6ft 4in, he’s quick, he can take the ball. He has a comfort with the ball which aligns with top players. Just, concentration is something that’s key for defenders. But I really, really like him and that’s the reason we’ve tied him down – and I think he’s got a great future.”

Admittedly, Murray may find the jump from claiming occasional minutes to becoming a first-team regular difficult. However, his natural right-sided nature and considerable stature make him a serious candidate for the position, especially given Trusty has recently recovered from plantar fasciitis and Simpson-Pusey is yet to play a single minute in green and white.

With a trip to Tynecastle followed by Falkirk in midweek before next Sunday’s Glasgow Derby semi-final in the Premier Sports Cup, there is growing suspicions that the Lennoxtown graduate may finally land his big break.

Tottenham determined to sign Barcelona star and ready to offer ‘immediate leading role’

Tottenham have expressed a real interest in signing one star from Barcelona ahead of 2026, according to a new report.

Spurs shortlist attacking targets with big-names on the radar

Spurs are preparing significant investment in attackers for January and beyond, with media sources indicating a new forward or two will definitely arrive at the club next year.

Indeed, Thomas Frank’s side have identified multiple targets as they attempt to revive their campaign.

Tottenham have significant funds available for the right acquisition, with the club willing to test the waters for elite talent. The recruitment team, led by co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange, are expected to prioritise signing a wide forward rather than a central striker, though no final decision has been confirmed as they approach the January window.

Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo remains the primary target, with the Lilywhites now intensifying their interest ahead of January.

The Ghana international has seriously impressed this season with his blistering pace and proficiency, which will definitely appeal to Frank as he seeks to add more creative spark.

Semenyo’s new deal also includes a tempting £65 million release clause which will be active early next month, but this has piqued rumoured interest from the likes of Liverpool and Man City as well.

Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye has emerged as another concrete target, viewed alongside Semenyo as possessing the energy and attacking versatility suited to elevating Tottenham’s forward line.

However, sources indicate Ndiaye is considered more likely as a summer acquisition rather than a January signing.

More ambitious names include Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa.

Tottenham tipped to strike Grealish-like deal for player who'd 'jump' at chance to join

Spurs could get him on loan in January.

Tottenham are believed to be exploring a potential January deal for Rodrygo, who himself would consider a move to north London as he instructs his representatives to find him a new club.

Aghehowa, who’s been in monstrous form since joining Porto from Atlético Madrid in 2024, also has huge admirers at Spurs, amid reports that they’re also prepared to make a winter move for the Spaniard.

Paratici and Lange appear to be drawing up a shortlist of credible attacking targets as the Lewis family look to kickstart a new era post-Daniel Levy, with Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford now also on their radar.

Tottenham 'determined' to sign Barcelona star Marcus Rashford

Rashford finds himself at a career crossroads following his impressive revival at the Camp Nou, with Tottenham now emerging as serious contenders to lure the forward back to the Premier League.

Despite his outstanding form in Spain, Barcelona remain indecisive about the £30 million purchase option in his loan deal from Man United, creating uncertainty that several English clubs are eager to exploit.

His Barça renaissance has persuaded the Calatans’ hierarchy to at least contemplate activating the permanent deal clause, but their precarious financial situation complicates matters.

While the £30 million fee appears affordable on paper, Rashford’s long-term future hangs in the balance, and Spurs could offer him a route to London.

That is according to Spanish media sources, who report that Tottenham have identified Rashford as the ‘ideal’ profile to rejuvenate their attack.

Spanish newspaper AS, as referenced, claim that Spurs are ‘determined’ to sign the 27-year-old and ready to offer him an ‘immediate leading role’ in the team — though any transfer would have to wait until the summer considering he’s still on loan in La Liga.

Rashford’s wages, reported to be around £325,000-per-week, present a pretty major roadblock for Frank’s side, but his proven Premier League experience and versatility would undoubtedly improve the team.

The United academy graduate, during spells of superstardom at Old Trafford, earmarked himself as an England regular before falling out of favour and impressing on loan at Aston Villa last season.

As bad as Vicario: Frank must finally bin 5/10 Spurs flop after Fulham

Tottenham Hotspur improved after the break, but the damage had been done following Fulham’s early flurry in north London, two goals to the good after six minutes.

Thomas Frank spoke before the game about the importance of starting with confidence, but the performance was anything but assured, with Sky Sports co-commentator Alan Smith remarking that it was “chaos in Tottenham’s defensive line” early on.

It wasn’t just the defenders who flattered to deceive, though, with Guglielmo Vicario’s ill-judged rush from his box to deal with a clearance leaving Harry Wilson to curl home and double the Cottagers’ lead just moments into the match.

Guglielmo Vicario is letting Spurs down

Vicario has been an astute piece of business for Tottenham over the past several years, but he has left plenty to be desired this season, with his error-strewn performance against Fulham sadly not an outlier, his costly mistake the third of the Premier League campaign, and 11th since he arrived in 2023.

There is a case to be made that the Lilywhite defenders needed to drop back and protect the yawning goalmouth, but Vicario, 28, has much to answer for, only making one save besides, as per Sofascore.

Whether Vicario reprises his starting berth between the sticks going forward is another matter, but it’s certainly one Frank will chew on as he looks to arrest this slump and bring Spurs back into the ascendancy, stringing together some strong winter form to challenge for a reprisal of their ongoing Champions League campaign.

However, changes clearly need to be made, and Frank does not have long to enact any shuffling, with Newcastle United awaiting at St. James’ Park on Tuesday evening.

There may actually be an outfield Tottenham star who must be dropped for that crucial top-flight clash, having lacked dynamism in the middle of the park this season.

5/10 Spurs star was as poor as Vicario

The boos chorused around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at full-time, and Joao Palhinha was among the dejected players in white after a disappointing midfield display that saw him hooked on the hour mark.

The loanee, brought in from Bayern Munich in the summer, was ineffective against his former London outfit, with football.london criticising ‘one of his shakier performances’ and branding him with a 5/10 match rating.

Vicario might suffer from crises of judgement, but Palhinha is beginning to solidify as a centre-midfielder lacking in key areas; namely, he is limited in possession and he is not mobile enough.

As per FBref, the Portugal international ranks among the bottom 9% of Premier League midfielders for progressive passes and progressive carries per 90.

These flaws were accentuated against Marco Silva’s side, who only had 37% of the ball but made it count. Palhinha’s inability to break lines and influence in the attacking half played into this.

You would hope, at least, that the tough-tackling midfielder would win his tackles, but Palhinha’s one attempted tackle saw him come up short, lunging into the grass.

The fact that the 30-year-old failed to create a chance and made just the one recovery further emphasises the poor display, too one-dimensional and sedentary in the middle of the park.

Tottenham need more energy and electricity and enthusiasm. Sure, key playmakers are sidelined, but this isn’t good enough.

Change is needed, and it might be time for Frank to repackage his engine room with a new combination.
